Qatar Airways UK to Australia or Asia: GBP 520 compensation
A Qatar Airways-operated journey starting in the United Kingdom and continuing on one ticket through Doha to Australia or Asia can qualify under UK261 at the ticketed final destination. Arrival four hours or more late normally starts at GBP 520 per eligible passenger; for a long journey arriving between three and four hours late, the amount can be reduced by half to GBP 260. The Qatar Airways-operated return from Australia or Asia to the UK normally is not UK261-covered because Qatar Airways is not a UK carrier.

The valuable cases are therefore UK-origin journeys with one booking, a confirmed Qatar Airways operator and sufficient final delay. State those facts before discussing the cause.
UK departure versus inbound return
| Qatar Airways itinerary | Normal UK261 position |
|---|---|
| London-Doha-Sydney on one ticket | Covered direction |
| UK airport-Doha-India or Southeast Asia on one ticket | Covered direction |
| Sydney-Doha-London | Normally not covered |
| Delhi-Doha-UK airport | Normally not covered |
| Doha-UK standalone journey | Normally not covered |
| UK resident flying inbound | Residence does not change direction |
UK261 protects departures from the UK regardless of Qatar Airways' nationality. Its inbound limb generally requires a UK or EU carrier, which Qatar Airways is not. Check any partner-operated sector separately.
The UK departure guide sets out the basic territorial test.
Final destination can be Australia or Asia
On a directly connected itinerary issued as one booking, preserve the Australian or Asian endpoint. If the UK departure arrives late in Doha and the passenger misses the connection, calculate delay where the replacement journey finally reaches that endpoint.
Do not let a reissued Doha boarding pass make the claim appear to start in Qatar. Retain the original e-ticket from the UK, all coupon numbers and the first boarding pass.
Where a partner itinerary continues beyond the first destination, identify whether it remains on the same ticket and what Qatar Airways promised. The booking structure controls whether the later arrival belongs in the UK261 calculation.
The missed Doha connection guide provides an evidence checklist.
GBP 520 and the half reduction
UK compensation bands are denominated in pounds, not a live conversion from euros. These Qatar Airways long-distance journeys normally exceed 3,500 km.
| Delay at ticketed final destination | Starting UK261 amount per passenger |
|---|---|
| Less than 3 hours | Usually no delay compensation |
| 3 hours to under 4 hours | GBP 260 after permitted 50% reduction |
| 4 hours or more | GBP 520 |
For three eligible passengers arriving more than four hours late, the starting total is GBP 1,560. The award is unrelated to fare price and can apply to a publicly available Privilege Club award ticket.
Do not multiply GBP 520 by the number of flight sectors. One passenger has one qualifying disrupted journey for this calculation.
The Qatar Airways amount guide compares UK and EU bands.
Final-arrival proof on very long journeys
Keep the scheduled arrival printed on the original ticket and actual time when passengers were permitted to leave the final aircraft. Baggage delivery and passport-control exit are not the arrival standard.
Convert times carefully. Australia, New Zealand, India and East Asia use different offsets and can be on a different calendar date from the UK. Show scheduled and actual times in local time plus UTC.
If rerouting lands at an alternative airport, retain the agreed transfer and actual arrival at the original or agreed destination point. An airport substitution can add hours that matter to the threshold.
The cause can defeat fixed compensation
Qatar Airways can resist UK261 fixed compensation by proving extraordinary circumstances and reasonable measures. Severe weather, air traffic control, security restrictions or closed airspace can qualify when connected to the actual disruption.
Generic wording such as "operational requirements" does not explain the defence. Request the event, affected aircraft or flight, time, restrictions and rerouting measures.
Routine technical defects and internal resource planning often require closer scrutiny. A knock-on delay should be traced back to the alleged extraordinary event and its continuing effect.
Care and rerouting remain separate from the fixed award. The claim-rejected guide shows how to request evidence rather than speculate.
Meals and hotel in Doha
When a protected UK-origin itinerary breaks in Doha, Qatar Airways can owe proportionate meals, communication, hotel and transfer while the passenger waits. Extraordinary circumstances do not normally remove this care duty.
Ask the transfer desk first. If the airline provides no workable assistance, keep receipts for reasonable necessities and explain each attempt to obtain help.
Do not confuse statutory care with complimentary transit accommodation offered for some planned long connections. A scheduled product has fare and timing criteria; disruption care responds to an unplanned wait.
Earliest rerouting to the final destination
After cancellation or a protected connection failure, request a route that reaches Australia or Asia at the earliest reasonable opportunity under comparable conditions. Ask Qatar Airways to consider suitable partner inventory where its own next service is much later.
Preserve live alternatives and Qatar Airways' response. Avoid self-buying an expensive ticket without first documenting a rerouting request unless genuine urgency prevents it.
If the airline offers a refund, decide whether travel still matters. Accepting reimbursement ordinarily ends carriage under the old ticket, while rerouting keeps the transport obligation alive.
Separate tickets and self-transfer
A UK-to-Doha ticket and independent Doha-to-Australia ticket can be sold in one OTA checkout. That does not necessarily create one UK261 journey to Australia.
Compare ticket numbers, PNRs, fare documents and baggage rules. If the first contract ends in Doha, its arrival delay may be below three hours even though the separate onward flight is missed.
An OTA guarantee, insurance or Qatar Airways goodwill may still help, but do not calculate GBP 520 at Sydney without proving one continuous booking.
Codeshare and operating carrier
British Airways can market or operate part of a Qatar Airways itinerary. The carrier supplying aircraft and crew normally receives the statutory claim.
This can matter on the return direction: a British Airways-operated flight arriving in the UK can have different inbound scope from Qatar Airways operating it. Read every "operated by" line rather than relying on QR or BA flight numbers.
The codeshare guide explains marketing, ticketing and operation separately.
Cancellation notice and early departure
For a cancellation, Qatar Airways can avoid fixed compensation where sufficiently early notice and compliant rerouting are proved, or where extraordinary circumstances apply. Preserve when the message actually reached the passenger.
A replacement departing substantially earlier can affect legal classification. Keep the original time, new time and first notice. Ticket refund or rerouting remains separate from the GBP 520 analysis.
Do not voluntarily cancel in an app after Qatar Airways changes the flight. State that the carrier disrupted the itinerary and identify the chosen statutory remedy.
Claim file
Include the complete UK-origin e-ticket, Qatar Airways PNR, operating carrier on each segment, original and replacement boarding passes, final arrival calculation, notices, cause correspondence and care receipts.
Open the claim with route and booking: "This was one Qatar Airways-operated booking from [UK airport] to [final destination] via Doha." State the final delay and request GBP 260 or GBP 520 per passenger.
Submit through Qatar Airways Feedback & Concerns and retain the confirmation. The claim-form guide gives the recommended attachment order.
Examples
London-Doha-Sydney arrives 7 hours late: one protected Qatar Airways booking can support GBP 520 per passenger, subject to cause.
UK-Doha-Bangkok arrives 3 hours 30 minutes late: the long-distance award can be reduced to GBP 260.
Sydney-Doha-London arrives 9 hours late: Qatar Airways starts outside the UK and is not a UK carrier, so UK261 normally does not pay fixed compensation.
London-Doha plus separate onward ticket: prove one contract before using the later Asian or Australian arrival as the UK261 threshold.
FAQ
Can Qatar Airways pay GBP 520 from the UK to Australia?
Yes when one protected booking reaches the Australian final destination at least four hours late and no valid extraordinary defence applies.
What is paid for a three-to-four-hour final delay?
The long-distance GBP 520 amount can be reduced by 50% to GBP 260.
Is Australia-to-UK covered on Qatar Airways?
Normally not under UK261 because Qatar Airways is not a UK carrier and the journey begins outside the UK.
Does a missed connection in Doha count?
Yes when the flights are one continuous UK-origin booking and final arrival meets the threshold.
Can bad weather remove hotel care?
Weather may defeat fixed compensation, but reasonable care can still remain due during a protected wait.
