Qatar Airways departures from the UK: UK261 compensation

UK261 covers Qatar Airways-operated journeys departing from a UK airport. A qualifying delay, short-notice cancellation or involuntary denied boarding can produce GBP 220, GBP 350 or GBP 520 per passenger, plus care and rerouting. Qatar Airways is not a UK carrier, so a Qatar-operated journey beginning in Doha, Asia, Africa or Australia normally lacks inbound UK261 fixed compensation.

Choose the situation that applies to your flight:

For a connection through Doha, preserve the original UK-origin ticket. The last ticketed destination and its actual arrival can determine the claim.

The passenger does not need to be British. A visitor, student or overseas resident receives the same departure protection when the flight starts in the UK.

Why Qatar Airways is covered outbound

UK261 applies to flights leaving the UK regardless of airline nationality. Qatar Airways therefore has statutory obligations on its own UK departures even though it is established in Qatar.

Coverage can follow one continuous reservation through Doha. If a Manchester-Doha-Melbourne journey is disrupted and the passenger reaches Melbourne eight hours late, final arrival rather than Doha alone can control the delay test.

Independent bookings usually produce independent destinations. A self-booked Qatar Airways ticket from Doha onward is not automatically protected by an unrelated UK-Doha booking. The Doha connection guide distinguishes protected connections from self-transfers.

Current UK compensation bands

UK distance categoryStandard amount per passenger
Short distanceGBP 220
Medium distanceGBP 350
Long distanceGBP 520

Most Qatar Airways travel from the UK through Doha falls into the long-distance category. For long-distance delay, arrival between three and four hours late can allow a 50% reduction. A final delay of four hours or more normally starts from the full GBP 520, assuming responsibility and all other conditions.

Do not convert EUR 600 into pounds or ask for whichever amount has a better exchange rate. UK261 provides its own sterling table.

Delays, cancellations and denied boarding

Delay

Fixed compensation usually requires at least three hours at the final destination. Door opening, not touchdown, is the practical arrival moment. Care begins during the departure wait based on the route and delay.

Cancellation

Qatar Airways must offer reimbursement or rerouting. Fixed compensation depends on notice, substitute timing and cause. Fourteen days’ notice normally removes the fixed sum, but not the transport choice.

Denied boarding

A passenger who checked in on time with valid documents and is involuntarily removed from an oversold covered flight can claim compensation and immediate assistance. A person who volunteers for an agreed benefit should retain the written terms of that bargain.

The Qatar Airways UK amount guide explains reductions and family totals.

Inbound Qatar Airways is different

UK261 covers arrivals from outside the UK only when the operating carrier has the required UK or EU status. Qatar Airways does not. A Qatar-operated Doha-London, Auckland-Doha-London or Cape Town-Doha-Manchester journey normally falls outside the fixed-payment scheme.

Marketing does not settle operation. A QR number on a British Airways-operated Doha-London flight does not make Qatar Airways the operator. Conversely, a BA code on a Qatar Airways aircraft does not give the Qatar operation British carrier status.

The operated-by field is therefore essential for both claim target and inbound coverage. Read the oneworld operator guide before filing against the airline shown most prominently on the ticket.

Care during a UK departure disruption

Qatar Airways must look after passengers while they await a protected delayed or replacement flight. Depending on the wait, that includes reasonable food and drink, communication, overnight accommodation and transport between airport and hotel.

Care is due regardless of whether the cause was extraordinary. A severe storm can remove fixed compensation but does not require a family to fund an unavoidable hotel without assistance.

If the airline does not provide usable care, make reasonable purchases and keep itemised receipts. Record the request made at the desk or through digital support. The Qatar Airways expense guide shows how to present the claim.

Refund or rerouting after cancellation

The passenger chooses among reimbursement, earliest comparable rerouting and later rerouting subject to availability. A voucher is not compulsory. If the trip still matters, do not accept a refund before comparing replacement options.

Earliest rerouting can involve another airline where reasonable. A passenger who buys a replacement without allowing Qatar Airways a realistic chance to assist should document urgency, comparable cabin and available alternatives.

A departure delay of at least five hours gives a separate option not to travel and request reimbursement. This differs from continuing and later claiming for final arrival.

How to submit a UK261 request

Keep the complete ticket, operated-by wording, boarding passes, first cancellation notice, replacement itinerary, final door-opening time and receipts. For a Doha misconnection, attach evidence that the onward flight was part of the same reservation.

Use Qatar Airways’ Feedback & Concerns channel. Identify UK261, the UK departure, final destination, disruption, arrival calculation and amount per passenger. Separate fixed compensation from care and refund.

If Qatar Airways does not resolve the complaint, its own UK rights notice points passengers to the UK Civil Aviation Authority. The CAA can provide guidance and enforcement support, but individual payment may still require an available dispute route or court action. Check the current CAA complaint process rather than assuming every airline belongs to an ADR scheme.

UK examples

London-Doha-Bangkok delayed eight hours at Bangkok: one Qatar Airways booking began in the UK. GBP 520 per passenger can be the starting claim if the cause was not extraordinary.

Manchester-Doha arrives 3:25 late: UK261 applies outbound, but the long-distance 50% reduction window can affect the amount.

Doha-London cancelled on the day: Qatar Airways operates inbound from outside the UK. Fixed UK261 compensation normally does not apply, although refund, rebooking and Convention remedies may remain.

FAQ

Does UK261 apply to Qatar Airways from London?

Yes. All airlines operating departures from UK airports are within the outbound scope.

Can Manchester-Doha-Australia be assessed to Australia?

Yes, when the journey is one continuous booking. Use final arrival at the last ticketed destination.

Is Doha to Heathrow protected by UK261?

Normally not when Qatar Airways operates. A British Airways operation can produce a different inbound result.

Can Qatar Airways make me accept a voucher?

No. A voucher is optional where UK261 gives a right to monetary reimbursement.

Where can I escalate a rejected UK claim?

Start with Qatar Airways, then consult the current UK CAA complaint route and any available dispute or court procedure.
