Qatar Airways EUR 600 or GBP 520 compensation for long journeys
Qatar Airways can owe EUR 600 per passenger for a qualifying journey over 3,500 km that starts in covered EU/EEA/Swiss territory, or GBP 520 for a qualifying long-distance departure from the UK. For delay, final arrival between three and four hours late can permit a 50% reduction; four hours or more normally starts from the full band. Qatar-operated journeys beginning in Doha or farther east normally receive neither fixed amount.

Distance is only one element. Operating carrier, direction, one-ticket status, disruption type and cause must all support the calculation.
Long-distance eligibility table
| Journey | Potential fixed amount |
|---|---|
| Paris-Doha, Qatar-operated, 5 hours late | EUR 600 |
| Frankfurt-Doha-Bangkok, one booking, 8 hours late | EUR 600 |
| London-Doha-Sydney, one booking, 7 hours late | GBP 520 |
| Rome-Doha, 3:30 late | EUR 300 can result from 50% reduction |
| Doha-Amsterdam, Qatar-operated, 7 hours late | Normally no EU261 fixed amount |
| Delhi-Doha-Manchester, Qatar-operated | Normally no UK261 fixed amount |
Every value is per eligible passenger and assumes no successful extraordinary-circumstances defence.
Why routes through Doha often reach the top band
Direct Qatar Airways travel from major European or UK airports to Doha is generally over 3,500 km, and journeys continuing to India, Southeast Asia, Africa, Australia or New Zealand are longer still. On one reservation, use the complete distance from the first protected origin to the final ticketed destination.
Do not add random segment mileage. The legal distance reference normally uses the great-circle distance between origin and final destination. Independent tickets can have separate endpoints, so a self-transfer itinerary should not automatically be measured to the last city.
The amount calculator covers shorter bands and family totals.
Three hours can mean half; four hours can mean full
For a long-distance delay, the standard entitlement arises at three hours at final destination, but Article 7’s reduction can cut the amount by 50% where arrival does not exceed the relevant four-hour window.
| Final arrival delay on covered long distance | EU261 starting figure |
|---|---|
| Under 3 hours | EUR 0 for delay compensation |
| 3:00 to 4:00 | EUR 300 can apply |
| More than 4:00 | EUR 600 normally becomes the starting point |
UK261 follows the corresponding long-distance logic with its statutory sterling band. Use the UK amount rather than converting euros.
Arrival means door opening at the final destination. A flight that lands 3:55 late but opens a door after 4:00 can cross the full-band boundary.
Cancellation and rerouting reductions
A short-notice cancellation can also produce EUR 600 or GBP 520. Check how early the replacement left and how late it arrived. Notice at least fourteen days before departure normally removes fixed compensation, while refund or rerouting remains.
Where Qatar Airways reroutes and final arrival falls within the statutory reduction window, the amount can be halved. Accepting the replacement does not itself waive compensation.
Keep the original schedule and every replacement. Qatar Airways bears the burden of proving when cancellation notice was delivered.
One booking to Asia or Australia
On a continuous journey, the connection in Doha does not cap the distance or delay. For Paris-Doha-Sydney, use Sydney as final destination. If the first flight arrives two hours late, the connection is missed and Sydney is reached a day later, the final delay supports the full long-distance analysis.
Separate Paris-Doha and Doha-Sydney tickets usually do not receive the same treatment. The first protected booking ends at Doha. The cost of losing the second ticket may be a proven-damage or insurance issue, but not an automatic extension of EUR 600.
Read the missed-connection guide for the continuous-booking proof.
Direction remains decisive
Qatar Airways is a non-EU and non-UK carrier. A long and severely delayed return from Australia, India or Doha does not gain EU261 or UK261 simply because it ends in London, Paris or Frankfurt.
An EU or UK partner operation can change inbound coverage. A Finnair-operated Doha-Helsinki flight or British Airways-operated Doha-London flight requires a different operator analysis. A QR code alone is not enough.
The inbound-direction page explains valid Montreal, refund and baggage alternatives.
Cause can remove the fixed band
Qatar Airways can avoid the fixed amount by proving an extraordinary circumstance and reasonable measures. Severe weather, air traffic restrictions, airport closure and a sudden security or airspace event can qualify. The defence should identify the event and its causal period.
Routine technical defects, ordinary aircraft rotation and internal staffing often require more evidence. A generic “operational reasons” label is not proof.
Even when EUR 600 or GBP 520 is unavailable, care and cancellation remedies can continue on a protected journey. Keep hotel, meal and transport receipts in a separate schedule.
Per-passenger calculation
| Travellers | Full EU top band | Reduced EU top band | Full UK top band |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | EUR 600 | EUR 300 | GBP 520 |
| 2 | EUR 1,200 | EUR 600 | GBP 1,040 |
| 4 | EUR 2,400 | EUR 1,200 | GBP 2,080 |
One adult can submit for a family with authority, but name each passenger. Fare-paying children ordinarily have individual entitlements. An infant without a separate fare needs closer review.
The fixed amount does not increase for Qsuite or a flexible fare. Cabin downgrade and lost ancillary services have different calculations.
Evidence for the top-band claim
Preserve:
- complete original ticket showing first origin and final destination;
- actual operator for every segment;
- scheduled and actual final door-opening time;
- cancellation notice and replacement itinerary;
- Qatar Airways’ stated cause;
- passenger list and fare status;
- receipts for separate care costs.
Write a transparent calculation: “Paris-Sydney exceeds 3,500 km; final door opening was 9 hours 12 minutes late; EUR 600 x 3 passengers = EUR 1,800.” If Qatar Airways pays half, ask which reduction window it applied.
Submit through Feedback & Concerns using the claim-form procedure.
Examples
Amsterdam-Doha-Dhaka, 3:42 late: EU261 can apply, but the 50% long-distance reduction can produce EUR 300 per passenger.
Madrid-Doha-Maldives, 11 hours late: one EU-origin booking and a controllable cause support the full EUR 600 starting amount.
London-Doha-Auckland cancelled at short notice: substitute arrival is twelve hours late. GBP 520 per eligible passenger can be due if no extraordinary defence succeeds.
FAQ
When does Qatar Airways owe the full EUR 600?
On a covered journey over 3,500 km, final delay above four hours or a qualifying cancellation outside reduction windows commonly starts from EUR 600.
Why can a three-hour delay pay EUR 300?
The long-distance band can be reduced by 50% when final arrival is between three and four hours late.
Is GBP 520 available from every UK airport?
It can be on a qualifying long-distance Qatar Airways departure from the UK; the passenger’s nationality and specific UK airport do not change outbound scope.
Does business class receive more fixed compensation?
No. Delay, cancellation and denied-boarding bands depend on distance and timing, not cabin price.
Can a return from Doha receive EUR 600?
Normally not when Qatar Airways operates from outside the EU. An EU operating partner can alter inbound coverage.
