Delta Amsterdam Schiphol delay or cancellation compensation

A Delta-operated flight departing Amsterdam Schiphol can qualify for EUR 600 when it is cancelled at short notice or reaches the booked final destination at least three hours late for a reason within Delta's responsibility. A direct Delta-operated flight from the United States to Amsterdam normally falls outside EU261. A KLM-operated inbound codeshare can be covered because KLM is an EU carrier.

Enter your route, date and type of disruption. We will check whether your case qualifies for a claim under EU 261/2004 or UK261.

What happened to your flight?

Claim up to €600 for a delayed or cancelled flight.

Choose the situation that applies to your flight:

Schiphol currently lists Delta check-in in Departure 2 and KLM Ground Services as baggage handler. Check the live departure information and boarding pass because airport positions can change.

The Delta US-to-Europe guide explains why identical airports can produce opposite results by direction and operator.

The EUR 600 distance band

Delta's Amsterdam transatlantic journeys generally exceed 3,500 km and enter EU261's EUR 600 band. A successful claim still requires the correct disruption test.

Arrival delay must reach at least three hours at the final destination. Cancellation compensation depends on when notice arrived, replacement timing and cause. Prompt rerouting can permit a 50% reduction for a long-distance cancellation.

The amount is per eligible passenger. Ticket price, Economy or Delta One cabin and use of SkyMiles do not alter the fixed band.

Delta and KLM operation

Delta and KLM cooperate commercially, but EU261 follows the carrier that operated the disrupted flight. A DL number can appear on a KLM-operated aircraft and a KL number on a Delta-operated aircraft.

For KLM operating Amsterdam-New York, KLM receives the statutory claim. For Delta operating the same route under both codes, Delta receives it. KLM carrying the passenger after a Delta cancellation does not become responsible for Delta's original event.

The operator also decides inbound coverage. KLM can be liable on a US-Amsterdam flight because it is an EU carrier, whereas Delta normally cannot under EU261 on that direction. Use the Delta codeshare guide when confirmations show several brands.

Final destination after connection

Amsterdam-New York-Raleigh on one ticket is assessed at Raleigh. If the transatlantic leg is late by two hours and the missed connection causes arrival seven hours late, the passenger may qualify under EU261.

Preserve all boarding passes, the single ticket and Delta's replacement. If the US continuation is operated by a Delta Connection carrier, record that operator and the through itinerary.

A separately purchased domestic ticket is not automatically protected. Notify its airline at once and check any self-transfer guarantee or insurance.

Cancellation and rerouting at Schiphol

For a protected cancellation, Delta must offer reimbursement or rerouting. If the destination still matters, request the earliest suitable transport under comparable conditions. A KLM alternative or another partner route can be relevant, subject to confirmed space.

Do not accept cash refund if the intended choice is rerouting. Give Delta a specific alternative and preserve any refusal before buying independently.

Notice at least fourteen days ahead usually removes fixed cancellation compensation, although refund or rerouting rights remain. Keep email headers and app timestamps.

Evidence at Schiphol

Schiphol currently identifies Departure 2 for Delta check-in. During disruption, retain:

  • Delta or KLM operator statement;
  • e-ticket, PNR and original boarding pass;
  • airport display with time and status;
  • cancellation or delay messages;
  • original and replacement final arrival;
  • agent, chat and call attempts;
  • alternative flights displayed for sale;
  • baggage tags and any baggage report;
  • meal, hotel and transport receipts.

KLM Ground Services handling a Delta bag does not itself make KLM the operating carrier for a flight claim. Keep baggage and flight records distinct.

Schiphol capacity, weather and ATC

Air traffic restrictions, severe weather, runway closure or airport security decisions can be extraordinary. Delta needs evidence connecting the event to the service and showing reasonable measures.

A routine technical problem, internal staffing issue or generic “operational” reason may remain compensable. An airport-wide problem can still leave care and rerouting due.

Ask for a timeline if Delta relies on knock-on disruption from an earlier rotation. The Delta weather and ATC guide explains how to test the causal link.

Meals, hotel and local transport

For a long-haul Delta delay from Amsterdam, EU261 care begins when an expected departure wait reaches four hours. Cancellation and denied boarding also create care while the passenger awaits rerouting.

Reasonable meals, communication, overnight accommodation and airport-hotel transport remain due even during extraordinary events. Ask the airline first and retain itemised receipts if nothing suitable is provided.

If Delta offers another airport, clarify the necessary ground connection and destination. A train can be a practical rerouting component, but self-purchase should be documented and proportionate.

Baggage during Amsterdam disruption

Confirm whether checked baggage follows the new itinerary. Schiphol identifies KLM Ground Services as Delta's current handler, but report a missing bag through the desk serving the arriving flight and retain the file reference.

Baggage delay uses Montreal Convention rules, not EU261. A passenger can claim both reasonable baggage expenses and EUR 600 flight compensation if each event independently qualifies.

The Delta delayed and lost baggage guide gives the 21-day written complaint rule and current 1,519 SDR ceiling.

Direct US-to-Amsterdam Delta travel

A Delta-operated New York-Amsterdam, Atlanta-Amsterdam or other US departure normally falls outside EU261. Delta is a US carrier and the route starts outside the covered territory.

If Delta cancels or significantly changes that flight and the passenger rejects alternatives without travelling, DOT cash-refund rules apply. Delta policy may provide rebooking and expenses for a controllable event.

When KLM operates the inbound flight, reassess EU261 because its EU carrier status changes the result. Never infer the operator from SkyMiles credit or sales channel.

Submission and escalation

Send the claim to the operator with Amsterdam departure, EU261 basis, final destination, final arrival, cause and EUR amount. Attach the itinerary and disruption evidence.

If Delta invokes extraordinary circumstances, ask for the specific airport or ATC restriction and recovery measures. The Netherlands has a national enforcement authority for air passenger rights, but enforcement and individual money recovery are not always the same process. Check the current complaint route and any court deadline.

Use the Delta rejected claim guide for a focused response and the Delta escalation guide for forum selection.

Worked examples

Amsterdam-New York arrives five hours late after a routine technical fault: Delta operates from the EU. EUR 600 may be due if no valid extraordinary defence applies.

Amsterdam-Atlanta cancelled by airport closure: Delta must offer refund or rerouting and care; credible closure evidence may defeat fixed compensation.

Atlanta-Amsterdam operated by Delta: EU261 ordinarily does not cover the route. Use DOT and Delta remedies.

New York-Amsterdam with DL code operated by KLM: KLM's EU status can cover the inbound service; submit the claim to KLM.

FAQ

Can a Delta flight from Amsterdam receive EUR 600?

Yes. A qualifying long-haul Delta-operated departure from Schiphol can receive EUR 600 per eligible passenger.

Is Atlanta-Amsterdam on Delta covered by EU261?

Not ordinarily, because Delta operates from the United States and is not an EU carrier.

Who handles a DL-coded flight operated by KLM?

KLM is the operating carrier and normally handles the statutory disruption claim for that flight.

Where does Delta currently check in at Schiphol?

Schiphol currently lists Delta in Departure 2; verify current airport information on the day of travel.

Can baggage delay be claimed together with flight compensation?

Yes. Montreal baggage reimbursement and EU261 flight compensation are separate when both sets of requirements are met.
