Aeromexico: EUR 250, 400 or 600 per passenger
The familiar EUR 250, EUR 400 and EUR 600 figures are statutory distance bands, not a price list for every Aeromexico problem. Before measuring distance, confirm that the flight is territorially covered, identify the operating carrier and establish a qualifying delay, cancellation or denied boarding. Aeromexico is Mexican, so its EU departures can enter EU261; its own Mexico-origin arrivals in Europe normally cannot.

British departures are assessed under UK261 and use sterling statutory bands. The law stated here is current at 9 September 2026. The EU reform adopted in July 2026 has deferred application, and its future nine-month claim period must not be used as a current deadline.
Coverage comes before the distance band
An AM-operated Madrid–Mexico City flight begins in the EU and can pass EU261's territorial test. An AM-operated Mexico City–Madrid flight begins in Mexico and does not gain coverage merely by landing in the EU. One round-trip PNR does not change those two directions. Nationality, currency and ticket seller are irrelevant to that geographic distinction.
An AM code is not conclusive when a partner operates the aircraft. Check the original e-ticket and “operated by” wording. The actual operating carrier may change the inbound analysis, particularly when an EU carrier performs a Mexico-to-EU sector.
What EUR 250, EUR 400 and EUR 600 represent
Under the current EU261 structure, EUR 250 applies to flights up to 1,500 km. EUR 400 covers intra-EU flights over 1,500 km and other qualifying flights between 1,500 and 3,500 km. EUR 600 applies to qualifying flights outside those categories over 3,500 km. The relevant regulatory method measures the route, not the fare paid or the passenger's inconvenience.
Most covered nonstop Aeromexico services from continental Europe to Mexico are long-haul and may therefore reach EUR 600. “May” matters: coverage, arrival delay, cancellation notice and cause still have to align. UK261 follows its own sterling amounts, so do not convert an EU demand casually into pounds.
Reductions and extraordinary circumstances
Certain rerouted passengers who arrive within specified time limits can face a 50% reduction in fixed compensation. That calculation depends on the band and arrival outcome, not simply on accepting a replacement flight. State the original and actual final-arrival times precisely.
Aeromexico may avoid fixed compensation if it proves extraordinary circumstances and that reasonable measures could not have avoided the disruption. A generic label such as “weather” is not enough to explain where, when and how the event affected this rotation. Even a successful defence to the flat award does not automatically erase care or transport rights on a covered flight.
Worked calculation for three passengers
Priya, Mateo and their child travel Paris–Mexico City–Puerto Vallarta on one Aeromexico ticket. Aeromexico operates the sectors, and a controllable cancellation at Paris causes them to arrive in Puerto Vallarta 12 hours late. The itinerary began in the EU, the final point was protected under one contract, and the route is in the long-haul band.
If all compensation conditions are met and no reduction applies, the fixed claim is EUR 600 × 3 = EUR 1,800. The family also paid EUR 74 for reasonable meals and EUR 31 for one shared transfer. Those expenses total EUR 105; they are not multiplied by three. If one passenger's ticket was bought with points, that fact does not automatically remove statutory eligibility.
Do not fold other remedies into the flat award
Reimbursement repays unused carriage; rerouting supplies alternative transport. Care covers reasonable meals, hotel accommodation, communications and hotel transfers during the wait. Fixed compensation answers the separate statutory disruption test. Use a small schedule with one line for each category.
Package-holiday rights belong against the organiser where the combined services fail. Baggage loss, delay and damage are governed primarily by the Montreal Convention and require proof of loss. Neither the package price nor a damaged suitcase changes the EU261 distance band, and the same financial loss cannot be recovered twice.
Evidence for the number you claim.
Preserve the original itinerary, ticket numbers, passenger names, operating carrier, booking structure and both scheduled and actual final-arrival times. For a cancellation, include the notice date and replacement offer. For a delay, record door-opening time if possible. Ask for the specific cause and reasonable-measures explanation.
In Aeromexico's customer-contact channel, show the territorial test first, then the distance band and multiplication by eligible passengers. Put receipts in a separate expenses table. If Aeromexico rejects the amount, identify whether it disputes coverage, distance, time, notice, cause or reduction before escalating.

Frequently asked questions
Is every Europe–Mexico disruption worth EUR 600?
No. The long-haul band applies only after territorial coverage and the disruption conditions are established.
Is compensation based on my Aeromexico fare?
No. Statutory fixed compensation uses route categories and qualifying events, not ticket price.
Do children receive a separate amount?
An eligible child with a qualifying reservation is assessed as a passenger; document the ticket and do not confuse this with multiplying shared expenses.
Can Aeromexico reduce EUR 600 after rerouting?
A 50% reduction can apply in defined arrival-time circumstances. Accepting rerouting alone does not answer the question.
Is nine months now the EU261 deadline?
No. At 9 September 2026, the July reform is not yet applicable. Limitation remains governed by the existing relevant national rules.
