A missed Aeromexico connection is strongest when every sector to the final destination was issued as one protected journey. In that situation, the final arrival can matter even if the first flight's delay was shorter than three hours. Two tickets assembled by an online agent normally remain two contracts, and the legal clock may stop at the destination on the disrupted ticket.

Territory still comes first. An Aeromexico journey beginning in the EU may be tested under EU261, and one beginning in Britain under UK261. Aeromexico's own journey beginning in Mexico does not normally become covered merely because its last point is European. This reflects the law at 9 September 2026; the July 2026 EU reform and future nine-month claim period have deferred application.
Prove that the connection was one contract
Look for one reservation record, through ticketing, consecutive coupons and baggage checked to the final point. None is always decisive alone, but together they show what transport Aeromexico contracted to provide. Preserve the original e-ticket receipt rather than relying on a travel-app display.
Two booking references or separately paid tickets may indicate a self-transfer. Even if the agent sold them in one checkout, inspect ticket numbers and conditions. A missed independently booked onward service can create contractual or damages questions, but it should not automatically be presented as the final destination of the first EU261 journey.
Measure arrival at the correct destination
For a protected through journey, compare the scheduled and actual arrival at the final contracted point. Record local dates and time zones. Arrival is generally tied to a door opening that permits passengers to leave, not touchdown. Keep the rerouting itinerary because the replacement route explains how the passenger eventually arrived.
If Aeromexico gets the passenger to Mexico City late but the onward protected flight to Cancún has departed, the delay in Cancún may be decisive. If Cancún was on a separate ticket, the Paris–Mexico City arrival normally remains the first contract's endpoint.
Check who operated the disrupted sector
Codeshares can place an AM number on a partner aircraft. The operating carrier—identified by “operated by”—is central to the statutory claim. Save the original confirmation and boarding pass for each sector, especially if Aeromexico rebooks onto another airline after the disruption.
Direction and operator work together. An AM-coded Mexico-origin sector performed by an EU carrier may require a different analysis from an Aeromexico-operated flight. Marketing relationships and frequent-flyer membership do not merge airline licences.
Worked example through Mexico City
George flies London–Mexico City–León on one Aeromexico ticket. The AM-operated London departure is two hours late. He misses the protected León connection, is placed on a flight the next morning and reaches León 10 hours 40 minutes late. His UK261 analysis uses Britain as the starting territory and León as the final destination under that contract.
He preserves the original coupons, both replacement boarding passes, the missed-connection message and the final door-opening time. His fixed compensation, if all conditions are met, is calculated per passenger under UK bands. One hotel night and necessary meals are listed at actual cost. Had he bought Mexico City–León separately, he would need to analyse the tickets and losses independently.
Rerouting, care and compensation solve different problems
Rerouting should get the passenger to the final destination. When the wait triggers care duties on a covered journey, reasonable meals, accommodation and hotel transfers are separate from fixed compensation. Reimbursement is relevant where unused transport is abandoned rather than rerouted.
A package organiser may have duties if the connection formed part of a package. Montreal claims concern baggage or provable delay damage within that Convention's framework. Do not add the price of a missed independent flight to a flat award without identifying a legal basis and avoiding duplicate recovery.
Submit a connection map, not a pile of screenshots.
Create one line per sector showing flight number, operator, scheduled times, actual times, ticket number and status. Add the moment Aeromexico offered rerouting and the final arrival. Ask the airline to state the specific cause affecting the first disrupted sector and what measures were available.
The claim should explain in a few sentences why the booking was continuous and why the final destination is relevant. Separate any fixed award, care receipts and unused carriage. Escalate the precise contested point to the body linked to the covered departure; a Mexico consumer route concerns a different territorial file.
