TUI missed connection on one booking

Published: 10 September 2026

A missed connection is strongest as a flight-rights claim when all sectors form one booking and the disruption makes the passenger reach the ticketed final destination at least three hours late. A short delay on the first leg can therefore matter more than it appears. A self-transfer bought separately usually produces a very different result.

Check your case in the form

Enter your route, date and type of disruption. We will check whether your case qualifies for a claim under EU 261/2004 or UK261.

What happened to your flight?

Claim up to €600 for a delayed or cancelled flight.

Choose the situation that applies to your flight:

The law described is current on 9 September 2026. The July 2026 EU reform remains subject to deferred application; its future nine-month claim limit is not in force.

Prove that the connection was protected

Find the booking confirmation, ticket numbers and coupons. One reservation code is helpful, but the contractual itinerary and through-ticketing are more important. Through-checked baggage and an airline-issued replacement boarding pass also support continuity.

If TUI sold Manchester–Amsterdam and the passenger separately bought Amsterdam–Aruba, missing the second flight is normally a self-transfer risk. The first carrier may answer only for its own delayed flight. By contrast, where both sectors were sold as one journey to Aruba, final arrival can be assessed at Aruba even if Amsterdam was the disrupted point.

A transfer to a cruise ship, resort coach or independently booked train is not automatically an air connection. It may generate a package or damages issue, but it does not become part of fixed compensation without the required carriage contract.

Identify direction and every operating carrier

TUI Group contains five airlines. TUI Airways is a UK carrier; TUI fly Germany, Belgium, Netherlands and Nordic are EU carriers. Other partners may appear on a TUI package. Write down who operated each sector, not just who sold it.

UK or EU departure brings the journey within the respective regime on the outward direction. An inbound journey starting outside Europe generally depends on whether the actual carrier is UK or EU. A TUI-branded return from Cancún does not receive UK261 automatically if a non-UK airline operates it.

Where different airlines operate connected sectors, responsibility can be legally fact-sensitive. Start by claiming from the operating carrier connected to the disruption, give the whole through itinerary and avoid asserting that the organiser operated an aircraft it did not.

Measure the final arrival and the cause

Compare scheduled arrival at the final contracted destination with the moment passengers could disembark there. Keep local time zones clear. Record the initial delay, missed-connection threshold, rebooking and actual final arrival in chronological order.

Worked example: Sofia travels on one ticket from Birmingham to Stockholm via Amsterdam. TUI Airways operates Birmingham–Amsterdam and TUI fly Netherlands operates the onward sector. The first flight is 95 minutes late, the connection is missed, and Sofia arrives in Stockholm 7 hours 10 minutes late. The relevant delay is at Stockholm, not 95 minutes in Amsterdam. Operator and territorial questions must still be analysed before choosing UK261 or EU261 and the correct currency.

The carrier may rely on extraordinary circumstances, but it must connect the event to the disrupted operation and show reasonable measures. An airport closure may qualify; routine scheduling or a vague “knock-on delay” may not. Ask why a reasonable reroute could not prevent the long final delay.

Separate transport, care and consequential loss

Rerouting gets the passenger to the final destination. During the wait, reasonable meals, a hotel and transfers may be due. Fixed compensation addresses qualifying lost time and is calculated per passenger. These requests belong in separate headings.

If the connection is no longer useful, reimbursement may cover unused carriage and potentially a return to the first departure point under the relevant rule. Do not buy new travel silently: ask the responsible carrier to reroute you, preserve its response and choose a proportionate alternative if assistance fails.

A missed cruise departure or prepaid excursion is not automatically added to the fixed award. Package rights may apply against the organiser, and other damages need proof, causation and avoidance of double recovery. Baggage delay or loss is handled under Montreal, supported by a PIR and receipts.

Send a connection-focused claim

Open with the complete itinerary and say that it was one booking. List scheduled and actual arrival at the final destination, then identify the delayed sector and its operator. Attach all boarding passes, replacement documents, messages and itemised receipts.

TUI's UK delay channel handles TUI Airways passengers and directs customers of other carriers to their operator. An unresolved TUI Airways case can go to AviationADR under TUI's contact guidance. EU operators and departure states have their own competent routes.

Do not frame the claim only as “I missed my flight”. Explain why the connection was protected, how late the final arrival became and which sums represent compensation, care or replacement transport.

Frequently asked questions

Is one booking reference enough to prove a protected connection?

It is useful evidence, but retain the full e-ticket and coupons showing the journey was sold as one contract to the final destination.

Does the first flight itself have to be three hours late?

No. On a protected connection, a shorter initial delay can cause arrival at the final destination at least three hours late.

Will TUI pay for a missed separately booked cruise?

Not automatically as fixed flight compensation. Examine package promises or a separate proven-damages route and avoid duplicate recovery.

Can I book my own replacement connection?

Ask the carrier to reroute you first. If it fails, document the available options and choose a reasonable alternative, keeping proof of necessity and cost.

Does extraordinary circumstance remove hotel and meal rights?

No. It may exclude fixed compensation, but reasonable care during the wait is a separate obligation on covered journeys.
