TUI cancelled flight: refund or rerouting
Published:
When TUI cancels a flight, the immediate choice is usually between getting the unused flight money back and being carried to the destination. Fixed compensation is a separate question. Do not let a refund form turn those distinct rights into one vague request, particularly where the flight formed part of a package holiday.

Check your case in the form
Enter your route, date and type of disruption. We will check whether your case qualifies for a claim under EU 261/2004 or UK261.
What happened to your flight?
Claim up to €600 for a delayed or cancelled flight.
Choose the situation that applies to your flight:
The rules below state the position on 9 September 2026. The EU changes adopted in July 2026 have deferred application. Their future nine-month claim period is not current law.
Choose refund or rerouting deliberately
Under UK261 or EU261, a passenger whose covered flight is cancelled is generally offered reimbursement or rerouting. Reimbursement suits someone abandoning the journey; rerouting suits someone who still needs to travel. Depending on the circumstances, rerouting may be at the earliest opportunity or at a later convenient date subject to seat availability.
Ask for concrete alternatives, not merely a voucher. If the airline cannot offer timely transport and the passenger reasonably buys a replacement, keep evidence of the options requested, the response, and the cheapest suitable fare found. Buying an extravagant itinerary without giving the carrier a reasonable chance to assist makes recovery harder.
Once reimbursement is chosen and accepted, the airline will not normally also owe transport to the destination. A voucher should be voluntary. Record exactly what was offered and avoid clicking an option whose consequences are unclear.
Identify the covered flight and responsible carrier
TUI is both a holiday brand and a group of separate airlines. TUI Airways is a UK carrier. TUI fly Germany, TUI fly Belgium, TUI fly Netherlands and TUI fly Nordic are EU carriers. The booking's “operated by” line matters more than the colour of the aircraft or the seller's logo.
A Bristol–Dalaman cancellation is within UK261 because it departs Britain. Dalaman–Bristol operated by TUI Airways is also potentially covered; the same inbound route operated by a non-UK carrier may not be. An Amsterdam–Curaçao service is within EU261 on departure, while the return normally needs an EU operating carrier for EU261 to apply.
If another airline operated the cancelled service, send the statutory flight request to it. The TUI organiser may separately owe package assistance or remedies, but it is not automatically the operating carrier.
Check notice before claiming a fixed award
Refund or rerouting is available because of the cancellation even where fixed compensation is not. Compensation has additional notice and cause tests. Notice at least 14 days before scheduled departure normally removes the fixed award. With 7–13 days' notice, or less than 7 days, the timing of the offered alternative becomes important under the statutory windows.
Preserve the original itinerary and the timestamped cancellation message. “We changed your flight” may legally describe a cancellation if the original flight no longer operates or the passenger is transferred to another service. A substantial advancement can also require cancellation analysis.
The carrier can resist fixed compensation if extraordinary circumstances caused the cancellation and all reasonable measures were taken. It should identify the event and connect it to the specific rotation. Refund, rerouting and care do not disappear merely because fixed compensation is excluded.
Keep the four financial requests separate
Fixed compensation is calculated per passenger by distance: EUR 250, 400 or 600 under EU261, or GBP 220, 350 or 520 under UK261, subject to the detailed band rules and possible rerouting reductions. It is not calculated from the package price.
Reimbursement covers unused carriage and, where applicable, parts already used that no longer serve the travel plan plus a return to the first departure point. Care covers reasonable meals, hotel accommodation and airport–hotel transfers while awaiting rerouting. A package claim concerns the organiser's performance, such as a materially shortened holiday. Proven baggage damage belongs under the Montreal Convention.
Example: Louise and her son are due to fly TUI Airways from Gatwick to Lanzarote for a seven-night package. Cancellation is announced at the gate and rerouting is offered two days later. They choose a reasonable same-evening alternative after documenting that no suitable TUI option exists. Their replacement-flight request goes under rerouting costs; food during the wait is care; any fixed UK261 amount is assessed per passenger; loss of two hotel nights, if it occurred, would be addressed separately under package rights.
Document the choice and escalate the disputed point
A strong submission begins with route, date, flight number, operator, original schedule and cancellation-notice time. State whether you chose reimbursement or rerouting. List replacement transport and care receipts separately, explaining why each purchase was necessary and reasonable.
TUI's UK claim channel handles TUI Airways customers and tells passengers on other carriers to approach that carrier. If TUI Airways rejects a properly documented claim, its contact guidance points to AviationADR. EU TUI airlines may have different national enforcement or dispute routes.
Do not repeatedly resubmit identical forms. Keep the acknowledgement and answer the reason actually disputed: notice, territorial scope, operating carrier, alternative timings, cause or amount.

Frequently asked questions
Must I accept a TUI voucher after cancellation?
No. Where the statutory reimbursement right applies, a voucher should be chosen voluntarily rather than imposed in place of money.
Can TUI make me wait several days for its next flight?
Rerouting should follow the applicable earliest-opportunity rule. Ask TUI for alternatives first and document the response before reasonably arranging your own transport.
Does a refund prevent a compensation claim?
Not automatically. Reimbursement and fixed compensation have different purposes, though compensation still depends on notice, coverage and cause.
What if the cancellation was caused by severe weather?
Extraordinary weather may defeat fixed compensation, but the choice between refund and rerouting and the duty of care remain separate.
Can I claim the lost package-holiday nights from the airline?
Not as an automatic addition to the fixed flight award. Address package performance to the organiser and avoid recovering the same loss twice.
