Qatar Airways cancelled flight: refund, rerouting and compensation
When Qatar Airways cancels a protected EU or UK departure, it must offer a choice between reimbursement and rerouting. Fixed compensation of up to EUR 600 or GBP 520 may be additional when notice was late and the cancellation was not caused by unavoidable extraordinary circumstances. A Qatar-operated cancellation on a journey beginning in Doha or another non-European country normally does not create EU261 or UK261 fixed compensation.

Choose the situation that applies to your flight:
Do not accept a voucher or an inconvenient replacement before deciding which statutory option fits the journey. The choice can affect onward travel, care and the cost of buying an alternative.
The three cancellation remedies
| Passenger choice | What it means |
|---|---|
| Reimbursement | Refund of the unused ticket, normally to the original payment method |
| Earliest rerouting | Comparable transport to the final destination as soon as possible |
| Later rerouting | Rebooking on a convenient later date, subject to seat availability |
If a connecting itinerary no longer serves its purpose, reimbursement can include the flown part and a return to the original departure point where appropriate. If the passenger chooses earliest rerouting, care continues until the replacement departs.
Fixed compensation is evaluated separately. A refund is not automatically a settlement of the cancellation claim, and a replacement flight does not automatically remove it.
First confirm that EU261 or UK261 covers the cancellation
EU261 applies when the Qatar Airways-operated journey departs from the EU and the corresponding covered airports in the EEA or Switzerland. UK261 applies when Qatar Airways operates a departure from the United Kingdom.
Because Qatar Airways is not an EU or UK carrier, a journey starting in Doha, Bangkok, Delhi, Cape Town or Sydney and ending in Europe normally falls outside the fixed-payment rules. A British Airways, Iberia or Finnair operation can change the answer, even where the booking carries a QR number.
One continuous booking matters. Cancellation of Paris-Doha can be assessed against the ticketed final destination in Bali when the whole itinerary was purchased together. Independent Paris-Doha and Doha-Bali tickets usually have separate endpoints.
The EU and UK coverage guide gives the directional test.
Notice decides whether the fixed amount remains possible
The time between Qatar Airways’ first cancellation notice and scheduled departure is central.
Notice at least fourteen days before departure
The fixed EU261 or UK261 amount is normally unavailable. Reimbursement or rerouting still has to be offered. If the airline merely changed the schedule substantially rather than using the word “cancelled”, the legal classification requires the actual timing and flight identity.
Notice seven to fourteen days before departure
Compensation can be avoided only if the offered replacement leaves no more than two hours early and reaches the destination less than four hours late.
Notice less than seven days before departure
The narrower safe window is a replacement leaving no more than one hour early and arriving less than two hours late. Outside that window, fixed compensation remains possible unless an extraordinary-circumstances defence succeeds.
The airline carries the burden of proving when the passenger was informed. Preserve the first email, SMS or app notification with its timestamp.
Refund is not the only option
Qatar Airways’ help centre provides a refund-and-voucher function, but statutory reimbursement should not be converted into a voucher without informed agreement. If the passenger wants to travel, a unilateral refund can be inadequate because the replacement fare may be much higher.
Earliest rerouting is not limited automatically to the next Qatar Airways flight. Current EU guidance expects comparable transport at the earliest opportunity. Qatar Airways’ conditions also contemplate rerouting on its own services, another carrier or surface transport. Availability and proportionality matter, but the request should not be rejected simply because a partner seat costs more.
If Qatar Airways fails to offer reasonable earliest rerouting and the passenger buys a sensible alternative, retain evidence of options searched and the urgency. The replacement-transport guide explains how to support the price difference.
How the fixed amount is calculated
| Protected distance | Standard EU261 amount |
|---|---|
| Up to 1,500 km | EUR 250 |
| Applicable 1,500-3,500 km category | EUR 400 |
| Other travel over 3,500 km | EUR 600 |
UK261 uses GBP 220, GBP 350 and GBP 520. Most protected Qatar Airways journeys via Doha exceed 3,500 km.
Rerouting arrival can permit a 50% reduction when it falls within the statutory window. For long-distance cancellation, arrival no more than four hours after schedule can reduce the top amount. Calculate per traveller, not per reservation.
The fixed band is not based on ticket price. A discounted economy passenger and a full-fare business passenger ordinarily use the same statutory distance table. Cabin downgrade is a separate percentage refund.
Extraordinary circumstances and reasonable measures
Qatar Airways does not owe fixed compensation where it proves an extraordinary event caused the cancellation and reasonable measures could not avoid it. Airspace closure, severe weather, airport shutdown or a security event can qualify. The defence is fact-specific.
Ask for more than “operational reasons”. The airline should identify the event, affected flight rotation, timing, causal link and alternatives considered. A problem on an earlier service does not indefinitely exempt later cancellations without evidence that the consequences remained unavoidable.
Even a valid extraordinary defence does not remove the cancellation choice or care. A passenger waiting for earliest rerouting can still require reasonable meals, a hotel and transport. The Doha care guide covers those expenses.
Connections through Doha
For a single Paris-Doha-Maldives booking, Qatar Airways must reroute to the final ticketed airport, not simply deliver the passenger to Doha. If the original first flight is cancelled and the substitute causes a day’s delay at the final destination, that timing is used for the compensation analysis.
With separate tickets, the first airline’s EU261 obligation normally ends at Doha. The second booking may be lost under its fare rules. Travel insurance, an agent guarantee or proven Montreal Convention loss may then be relevant, but statutory rerouting to the second destination is not automatic.
Do not let a reissued ticket hide the original contract. Keep both versions and every segment status.
What to request and preserve
Before contacting Qatar Airways, assemble:
- original itinerary and e-ticket receipt;
- first cancellation notice and timestamp;
- all replacement offers, including departure and arrival times;
- the operated-by line for every segment;
- record of refund, voucher or rerouting choice;
- receipts for necessary meals, accommodation and transport;
- screenshots of suitable alternatives if none was offered.
Use the Feedback & Concerns channel for the statutory claim when Qatar Airways operated. Travel-agent tickets may need the issuer for the mechanical ticket refund, but the agent is not a substitute respondent for EU261 or UK261 compensation.
Write separate totals for fixed compensation, replacement-fare reimbursement and care. State the final destination and how much notice was given. The claim-form guide provides the submission order.
Cancellation examples
Rome-Doha-Tokyo cancelled two days before travel: Qatar Airways reroutes the passenger to arrive eight hours late. The journey began in the EU and exceeds 3,500 km. EUR 600 can be claimed if the cause was not extraordinary.
London-Doha cancelled three weeks ahead: the fixed amount is normally unavailable because notice exceeded fourteen days. Qatar Airways must still provide the applicable refund or rerouting choice.
Doha-Paris cancelled at the gate: Qatar Airways is a non-EU carrier departing outside the EU. EU261 fixed compensation normally does not apply, but ticket remedies, airline conditions and provable Montreal loss can still be examined.
FAQ
Can I demand cash instead of a Qatar Airways voucher?
Yes, where a protected cancellation creates a statutory reimbursement right. A voucher requires genuine passenger agreement and should not be treated as the only option.
Does Qatar Airways owe compensation after giving fourteen days’ notice?
Normally no fixed EU261 or UK261 payment is due, but reimbursement or rerouting rights remain.
Can I choose a different airline for rerouting?
Potentially. Earliest comparable rerouting is not automatically limited to Qatar Airways when a reasonable partner or alternative can reach the destination sooner.
Does bad weather remove the right to a hotel?
No. Weather can exclude fixed compensation, but care while waiting for protected rerouting continues.
Who handles a cancelled ticket bought through an agent?
The issuer may need to process the ticket refund, while the operating carrier remains the normal target for statutory cancellation compensation and care.
