Start with route coverage
Qatar Airways is neither an EU nor a UK carrier. EU261 can cover its flights departing from the EU, EEA or Switzerland. UK261 can cover Qatar Airways departures from the United Kingdom. A continuous protected booking can extend the rerouting analysis through Doha to the ticketed final destination.
A Qatar-operated journey that starts in Doha, India, Asia, Africa or Australia normally does not gain EU261 or UK261 just because its destination is in Europe. Contractual rebooking under Qatar Airways' conditions may still apply, but do not promise statutory reimbursement on route direction alone.
Check the operator as well. If British Airways, Finnair or another partner supplied the aircraft and crew, that airline is normally responsible for statutory rerouting.
What Qatar Airways should offer first
After a covered cancellation, the passenger chooses reimbursement, rerouting at the earliest opportunity or travel later at convenience subject to availability. For a protected missed connection on one ticket, Qatar Airways should ordinarily arrange transport to the final destination.
Ask the service desk and written support to search:
- Qatar Airways flights on the same or a different routing;
- suitable Oneworld services;
- another airline where it is materially earlier and comparable;
- rail or other surface transport for a sensible part of the journey;
- transfer from an alternative airport to the agreed destination point.

When self-purchase becomes defensible

Urgency matters. A medical appointment, expiring visa, unaccompanied child arrangement or essential onward event can support the reasonableness of prompt action, but preserve objective evidence rather than relying on a later assertion.
Build a real-time option record
Take screenshots showing carrier, route, cabin, price, departure time and seats available. Record the time zone. Search results obtained days later do not prove what Qatar Airways could have booked at the airport.
Ask Qatar Airways to state its proposed arrival time. If it offers travel three days later while a partner has seats that day, request the partner option in writing. Save the refusal, queue time, call log and case number.
Do not buy several refundable alternatives and claim all of them. Choose one proportionate solution and cancel unused reservations promptly.
Comparable transport does not mean identical luxury
The aim is to complete the journey under comparable conditions, not to create a windfall. Preserve the original cabin, baggage allowance, accessibility needs and connection constraints.
If Qatar Airways cannot provide Business Class soon and the passenger buys Economy to arrive reasonably, claim the actual replacement cost and separately examine downgrade treatment. If only an expensive premium seat remains, document the absence of practical lower-cabin inventory at purchase time.
A first-class rail ticket can be reasonable where it replaces a booked premium cabin and no standard seat is available, but it should still be justified. Meals, hotel and local transfer during the wait belong in a separate care schedule.
Train and ground transport examples
A cancelled Qatar Airways feeder departure may make rail the quickest way to another airport. Before buying, ask whether Qatar Airways will endorse or arrange it and whether checked baggage can be recovered.

Berlin-Doha-Bangkok cancelled at origin: Qatar Airways offers travel two days later while a same-day comparable partner itinerary is available. After a written request and refusal, a reasonably priced self-bought alternative can support reimbursement under EU261.
London-Doha cancellation: the passenger accepts a full cash refund and then buys a more expensive ticket by choice. UK261 rerouting-cost recovery is much weaker because reimbursement was elected.
Doha-Paris standalone cancellation: Qatar Airways operates from outside Europe. EU261 does not ordinarily apply; use contractual rebooking and refund terms without promising the European remedy.
