Lufthansa flight compensation: EU261 and UK261 claims explained

Short answer: a Lufthansa disruption can produce fixed compensation of EUR 250, EUR 400 or EUR 600 under EU261, or GBP 220, GBP 350 or GBP 520 under UK261. The usual triggers are arrival at least three hours late, cancellation on short notice, or involuntary denied boarding. Route coverage, the airline that actually operated the flight and the cause must all be checked before the amount is calculated.

Choose the situation that applies to your flight:

Lufthansa is licensed in the European Union. That matters because EU261 covers not only Lufthansa departures from the EU and EEA, but also Lufthansa-operated flights arriving there from a third country. A New York to Frankfurt flight operated by Lufthansa can therefore be covered even though it starts in the United States. A United-operated flight sold under an LH code needs a different analysis because the operating airline, not the marketing code, controls liability.

This guide states the law as checked on 10 August 2026. The revised EU rules adopted in July 2026 are not yet applicable. Current claims must still be tested under the rules in force today.

Start with the route and operating airline

The table gives a practical first classification. It assumes that the affected sector is actually operated by Lufthansa.

Coverage is not the same as entitlement. A covered flight still needs a qualifying event. For a delay, arrival at the final destination normally needs to be at least three hours late. For cancellation, the notice period and replacement timings matter. For denied boarding, the passenger must normally have presented correctly and been refused involuntarily.

The Lufthansa EU261 coverage guide deals with difficult directions. Where the United Kingdom is involved, use the UK261 versus EU261 guide before writing a currency amount.

Compensation bands

EU261 uses distance bands and treats intra-EU travel specially.

EU261 distance categoryStandard payment per passenger
Up to 1,500 kmEUR 250
Intra-EU over 1,500 kmEUR 400
Other flights from 1,500 to 3,500 kmEUR 400
Other flights over 3,500 kmEUR 600

UK261 currently uses GBP 220, GBP 350 and GBP 520. For a long flight over 3,500 km that arrives between three and four hours late, the UK delay amount is GBP 260. EU case law likewise permits the EUR 600 amount to be reduced to EUR 300 for a long-haul delay below four hours. A cancellation or rerouting can also produce a lawful 50 percent reduction where the alternative arrival falls inside the statutory window.

Distance is measured to the final destination affected by the disruption on one reservation. Frankfurt is not automatically the measuring point. If a late feeder causes a passenger to miss the onward service and reach Tokyo six hours late, the journey is assessed at Tokyo when the flights form one booking. The Lufthansa compensation calculator works through this without using ticket price as a substitute for distance.

The event that creates a claim

Long arrival delay

For fixed delay compensation, scheduled and actual arrival at the ticketed final destination are compared. Actual arrival means the time when at least one aircraft door opens and passengers are permitted to leave, not touchdown or gate parking. Read the focused Lufthansa delayed-flight guide if the result is close to three hours.

Cancellation

A cancelled flight creates a choice between reimbursement and rerouting regardless of fault. Fixed compensation is separate. Lufthansa may avoid that payment if it proves timely notice, a replacement inside the prescribed windows, or extraordinary circumstances that could not have been avoided despite reasonable measures. Accepting a replacement flight does not by itself waive compensation.

Involuntary denied boarding

When a passenger with a confirmed booking and valid documents is bumped against their will, compensation is usually immediate. Refund or rerouting and care are additional rights. A voluntary voucher deal is different, so the airport document should say whether the passenger volunteered.

Downgrade

A move to a lower cabin is not fixed delay compensation. Article 10 instead requires 30, 50 or 75 percent of the price attributable to the downgraded flight, depending on distance. It can coexist with a delay or cancellation payment when both sets of conditions are met.

Causes Lufthansa must prove

An airline does not escape payment merely by writing "operational reasons." It must identify the event, show how it affected the particular flight and demonstrate reasonable measures.

Ordinary wear, a component failure discovered during routine operations, rotation planning and crew allocation usually sit within airline activity. Severe weather, an airport closure, an air-traffic management restriction or a security event may be extraordinary, but only if the evidence connects it to the disruption. A strike by Lufthansa's own workforce is not automatically extraordinary under the Court of Justice judgment in Airhelp v SAS.

Care duties are much wider than compensation. Meals, refreshments, communications and, when necessary, a hotel with transport can remain due even when the cause is genuinely extraordinary. Keep itemised receipts if Lufthansa does not provide reasonable assistance.

Identify the defendant behind the LH code

The booking may show an LH number while the boarding pass says "operated by Lufthansa City Airlines," Discover Airlines, Air Dolomiti, SWISS, Austrian, Brussels Airlines or another partner. These companies do not become one legal carrier merely because they share a group or booking system.

For EU261 and UK261, the operating air carrier normally answers for the disrupted flight. Record the "operated by" line, carrier code, aircraft and boarding pass. Identify that airline without guessing from the ticket logo or marketing flight number.

What to claim separately

One event can create several legally distinct heads of recovery:

  • fixed compensation for delay, cancellation or denied boarding;
  • refund of unused travel or rerouting to the booked destination;
  • reasonable meals, hotel and local transport;
  • a downgrade reimbursement;
  • proven baggage loss under the Montreal Convention;
  • a US DOT or Canadian remedy on a qualifying transatlantic itinerary.

Do not add two fixed payments for the same inconvenience under overlapping EU and UK rules. Do not deduct meal costs from the fixed amount either. Put each category on a separate line with its own legal basis and evidence.

Evidence that makes the file usable

Save the e-ticket receipt, booking reference, every boarding pass and the original itinerary. Screenshot notifications before the booking record is rewritten. Keep the rebooking confirmation, actual door-opening time if known, baggage records and itemised expenses. Ask Lufthansa for the precise disruption reason rather than accepting a category label.

For several passengers, list each name and amount. Compensation belongs to the traveller, including a child with a paid seat or qualifying award ticket, not merely to the person who paid. A representative needs authority from each adult claimant.

Submit a concise chronology through Lufthansa Feedback after travel. State the route, operator, scheduled and actual final arrival, legal regime, amount and bank details. Keep the submission confirmation and attachments. If Lufthansa refuses, compare the answer with the evidence before moving to Schlichtung Reise & Verkehr, the appropriate UK channel or court.

Present rule versus adopted EU reform

The Council gave final clearance to revised passenger-rights rules in July 2026. Their future procedure includes a nine-month period for submitting a compensation request and a 30-day airline response. The Council states that the updated rules enter into force 12 months and 20 days after publication in the Official Journal. Those future timings do not replace current law on 10 August 2026.

This distinction is especially important in older Lufthansa cases. Current limitation still depends on the court and claim type. Germany generally applies its regular three-year rule, while England and Wales commonly use six years for this contractual statutory claim. Never wait for the future reform to decide whether an existing claim is already close to expiry.

FAQ

How much compensation can Lufthansa owe?

Under EU261 the standard bands are EUR 250, EUR 400 and EUR 600 per passenger. UK261 uses GBP 220, GBP 350 and GBP 520, with a GBP 260 long-haul delay amount for arrival between three and four hours late.

Is a Lufthansa flight from the United States to Germany covered?

Yes, when Lufthansa actually operates the flight and it arrives in the EU, because Lufthansa is a Community carrier. A partner-operated LH codeshare must be tested using the partner's identity.

Can I accept Lufthansa rerouting and still claim compensation?

Yes. Rerouting under Article 8 and fixed compensation under Article 7 are separate. Replacement timings may reduce or eliminate the fixed sum in defined cases, but accepting transport is not a general waiver.

Does bad weather remove every Lufthansa duty?

No. Proven extraordinary weather may defeat fixed compensation, but Lufthansa must still provide care and rerouting or refund rights. It must also prove the causal link and reasonable measures.

Do the new nine-month EU claim rules already apply?

No. They were adopted in 2026 but were not applicable on 10 August 2026. Current national limitation and procedural rules remain relevant until the revised law reaches its application date.
