Lufthansa delayed flight compensation: arrival, cause and amount

Short answer: if a covered Lufthansa journey reaches its final destination at least three hours late, each passenger may claim EUR 250, EUR 400 or EUR 600 under EU261, or the corresponding UK261 amount where that regime governs. Lufthansa can resist the fixed payment only by proving an extraordinary cause and reasonable measures. Care can still be due when compensation is not.

What happened to your flight?

Claim up to €600 for a delayed or cancelled flight.

Choose the situation that applies to your flight:

The first question is not how late the aircraft departed. It is how late the passenger arrived at the destination shown at the end of one protected booking. A 55-minute feeder delay into Frankfurt may therefore produce a valid claim if it causes an overnight missed connection and a ten-hour delay in Boston, Delhi or Cape Town.

Lufthansa's EU licence makes many inbound journeys eligible. A Lufthansa-operated Toronto to Munich flight can fall under EU261. If Air Canada performs the service under an LH codeshare, the same inbound route is not covered merely because the ticket shows Lufthansa branding. The operating-carrier guide helps separate those cases.

Departure delay is not the compensation threshold

Article 6 uses departure delay to trigger care at two, three or four hours, depending on distance. Fixed payment for a delayed arrival comes from Court of Justice case law and uses the final arrival threshold of three hours.

These clocks can produce different results:

  • departure 3 hours 20 minutes late, arrival 2 hours 45 minutes late: care may be due, but no fixed delay payment;
  • departure 1 hour late, missed connection, final arrival 8 hours late: fixed compensation may be due;
  • departure 5 hours late and passenger abandons travel: refund rights arise even without an arrival;
  • arrival 3 hours 2 minutes late after a covered journey: the threshold is met.

Actual arrival is when at least one aircraft door opens and passengers may leave. Touchdown, runway exit and parking time do not end the delay. On a borderline file, record the first permitted exit rather than relying only on a flight tracker.

One booking changes the result

The Court's Folkerts judgment protects a passenger whose initial flight was not three hours late by itself but caused a late final arrival after a missed connection. The segments must form a single booking or otherwise constitute one contract of carriage for the protected journey.

Example: Manchester to Frankfurt to Singapore is issued under one booking and operated by Lufthansa. The feeder reaches Frankfurt 70 minutes late, the passenger misses Singapore, and the replacement arrives 13 hours late. UK departure means UK261 applies. Distance is measured to Singapore, not Frankfurt, and the long-haul amount is assessed using final arrival.

Contrast two separate tickets. If Manchester to Frankfurt ends 70 minutes late and the separately bought Frankfurt to Singapore flight is missed, Frankfurt is normally the destination of the first contract. The airline does not automatically owe the new Singapore ticket. Travel insurance or a protected connection product may matter instead.

For the complete connection test, use Lufthansa missed-connection compensation.

Euro and sterling bands

EU261 pays EUR 250 up to 1,500 km, EUR 400 for longer intra-EU flights and other routes up to 3,500 km, and EUR 600 for other journeys above 3,500 km. An eligible Frankfurt to New York, or New York to Frankfurt operated by Lufthansa, normally reaches the top band.

UK261 pays GBP 220 under 1,500 km and GBP 350 from 1,500 to 3,500 km. Above 3,500 km, a delay between three and four hours produces GBP 260; a delay of at least four hours produces GBP 520. Do not submit both euro and sterling requests for the same event. The Lufthansa UK261 and EU261 comparison identifies the cleaner route.

EU law also permits the long-haul EUR 600 amount to be reduced to EUR 300 where arrival is under four hours late. This is a statutory reduction, not a bargaining offer. It does not turn a EUR 400 route into EUR 200 merely because the delay is under four hours.

Ordinary operations versus extraordinary events

Lufthansa carries the burden of proving the defence. A useful response names the event, its timing, the affected rotation and the measures taken.

Usually within normal airline activity:

  • a routine technical defect or part replacement;
  • aircraft rotation and late inbound planning;
  • ordinary crew shortage or roster failure;
  • a commercial decision to consolidate flights;
  • a strike by the carrier's own workforce.

Potentially extraordinary if proved:

  • severe weather incompatible with safe operation;
  • a binding air-traffic flow restriction;
  • an airport or runway closure outside the carrier's control;
  • a security event or hidden manufacturing defect;
  • a third-party strike that directly prevents the flight.

The label is only the beginning. If fog ended early but Lufthansa lacked an available crew six hours later, the causal chain may include an airline-controlled problem. If an air-traffic slot moved the flight by 40 minutes but final arrival was five hours late, Lufthansa should explain the remaining time.

Care during the wait

Meals and refreshments become due after the Article 6 waiting threshold: two hours for routes up to 1,500 km, three hours for medium journeys and longer intra-EU travel, and four hours for other flights over 3,500 km. Two communications are included. If departure moves to the next day, Lufthansa should provide a hotel and transport between airport and accommodation.

The duty survives genuine extraordinary circumstances. If the QR code on the boarding pass does not produce a suitable meal voucher, buy a reasonable meal and keep an itemised receipt. A standard nearby hotel is easier to recover than a luxury choice made without necessity. The expense route is explained in Lufthansa hotel and meal reimbursement.

Build a precise delay file

Download or screenshot the original schedule before accepting a change. Keep every boarding pass, including the replacement. Save texts, emails and app notices with timestamps. Note the gate, aircraft registration if visible, landing time and door-opening time. Photograph the arrivals display if it still shows the delay.

Ask Lufthansa for the actual reason. A claim should state:

  1. passenger names and booking reference;
  2. every sector on the protected itinerary;
  3. scheduled and actual final arrival;
  4. the operating carrier for the affected flight;
  5. the legal regime, distance band and amount per person;
  6. a separate list of care expenses with receipts.

Do not send only a flight number and the words "please compensate me." A structured chronology lets Lufthansa test the correct flight and leaves a usable record if the answer must later be challenged.

FAQ

Does Lufthansa pay for exactly three hours of delay?

Yes, the Court of Justice threshold is at least three hours at the final destination. In a close case, prove when an aircraft door opened rather than relying on touchdown.

My first Lufthansa flight was only 45 minutes late. Can I claim?

Possibly. On one booking, that delay may qualify if it caused a missed connection and arrival at the final destination at least three hours late.

Is a Lufthansa technical delay automatically extraordinary?

No. Ordinary technical failures are generally part of airline operations. Lufthansa must identify any exceptional external event and show reasonable measures.

Can Lufthansa reduce EUR 600 to EUR 300?

Yes, on a flight over 3,500 km where the qualifying final arrival is under four hours late. The facts and route must support the statutory reduction.

Are meals due before three hours?

They can be. Care starts by departure delay and distance, beginning at two hours on routes up to 1,500 km. Fixed compensation uses a different final-arrival test.
