Lufthansa missed connection: compensation at the final destination
Short answer: if Lufthansa delay or cancellation makes you miss a connection on one protected booking, compensation is assessed using arrival at the final ticketed destination. The first flight does not need to be three hours late by itself. A replacement that reaches the final destination at least three hours late can support EUR 250-600 or a UK261 amount, subject to route coverage, operating carrier and cause.

What happened to your flight?
Claim up to €600 for a delayed or cancelled flight.

Separate tickets usually do not receive this end-to-end protection. The booking structure should be proved before arguing about the length of the connection.
One booking or self-transfer?
| Evidence | Protected through journey | Separate tickets |
|---|---|---|
| Booking reference | usually one | often two or more |
| E-ticket | all sectors on one ticket | separate ticket numbers |
| Baggage | commonly checked through | often must be collected |
| Airline promise | connection sold as one journey | passenger built connection |
| Final destination | last ticketed airport | end of each contract |
One booking is not limited to Lufthansa-only travel. A Lufthansa feeder and a partner onward service can form a through contract. The operating carrier of the disrupted sector remains central to whom the claim is directed.
A self-transfer label, separate booking warning or need to recheck baggage points the other way. Travel insurance or a connection-guarantee product may protect the second ticket, but EU261 does not automatically make the first airline insurer of an independent journey.
Final arrival under Folkerts
The Court of Justice held in Folkerts that a passenger can receive delay compensation where the initial flight was delayed by less than three hours but the missed connection caused arrival at the final destination at least three hours late.
Example: Amsterdam to Frankfurt reaches Frankfurt 50 minutes late. The passenger misses Lufthansa to São Paulo and arrives 15 hours late after rerouting. Both flights are on one booking. The relevant delay is at São Paulo and the distance is Amsterdam to São Paulo, which puts an eligible EU261 claim in the EUR 600 band.
Example: London to Munich to Delhi is one Lufthansa journey. The feeder delay causes an overnight replacement. UK departure points to UK261, and final arrival in Delhi sets both the delay and long-haul distance.
The Lufthansa calculator covers the resulting currency and amount.
What Lufthansa must do after the connection is lost
Lufthansa should reroute to the final destination at the earliest opportunity under comparable transport conditions. Depending on availability, that may involve a later Lufthansa flight, another group airline or a partner. The passenger is not required to accept an unnecessary multi-day wait simply because Lufthansa prefers its own inventory.
While waiting for earliest rerouting, reasonable meals and refreshments are due. An overnight delay requires hotel accommodation and transport between the airport and hotel. These care duties continue even if weather or air-traffic restrictions ultimately defeat fixed compensation.
If Lufthansa offers no suitable transport, ask for another option in writing. Capture seats and prices available at that time before independently booking. A reasonable replacement may be recoverable, but an unexplained premium purchase is harder to defend.
Cause still matters
A missed connection is the consequence, not the cause. Identify why the first flight was late or cancelled.
Ordinary technical defects, aircraft rotation, routine crew planning and a carrier's internal strike generally stay within airline operations. Severe weather, an airport closure or a binding ATC restriction may be extraordinary if Lufthansa proves the link and reasonable measures.
The airline must address the whole delay. A 30-minute ATC restriction may explain the missed connection, but rerouting decisions can determine whether final arrival is four hours or one day late. Reasonable measures include examining timely alternative routes, not merely waiting for the next identical service.
Mixed operators and codeshare
An itinerary can show LH numbers on both sectors while one is operated by Lufthansa City Airlines, Air Dolomiti, United, Air Canada or another partner. Record who operated the disrupted flight and who was contracted for the onward sector.
Suppose United operates New York to Frankfurt under an LH code and Lufthansa operates Frankfurt to Rome. The United flight is late and Rome is missed. Inbound EU261 coverage and the proper defendant are more complex than the logo suggests. By contrast, a Lufthansa-operated New York feeder gives a clear Community-carrier link.
Use Lufthansa Group operating-carrier rules before sending demands to multiple airlines.
Connection time is not an automatic defence
If an airline or agent sold the flights as one booking, it normally accepted the scheduled connection under the airport and itinerary rules used for ticketing. Lufthansa should not reject solely because the passenger had a "short connection" that the airline itself sold.
Passenger conduct can matter. Walking away for shopping, ignoring gate information or lacking required travel documents can break causation. Preserve evidence that you proceeded directly, followed transfer signs and sought help. If security or passport queues consumed time, note when you joined and left them and whether any fast-connection assistance was available.
Do not claim a universal minimum connection time from an unofficial website. Airports, terminals, routes and ticketing rules differ. The actual protected booking is stronger evidence than a generic internet number.
Frankfurt and Munich evidence
At Frankfurt, record arrival gate or bus position, passport or security checks, onward gate and displayed walking time. Frankfurt Airport states that its boards show current gate travel time. The Frankfurt Lufthansa guide adds terminal-specific proof.
At Munich, note whether movement between Terminal 2 and its satellite required the underground train, and whether Schengen status required passport control. The Munich connection guide maps those steps without inventing a fixed transfer time.
Claim file
Keep the complete e-ticket, original and replacement boarding passes, baggage tags and all messages. Note scheduled and actual arrival at the final destination. Screenshot rebooking offers and save receipts.
The claim should state:
- one-booking evidence;
- affected operating carrier;
- reason given for the first disruption;
- missed onward flight;
- replacement route and final door-opening time;
- distance band and amount per passenger;
- care or replacement costs separately.
If Lufthansa answers only that the first flight was 55 minutes late, reply that Folkerts requires final-destination assessment and attach the through ticket.
FAQ
Can a 40-minute Lufthansa delay create compensation?
Yes, when one protected booking loses a connection and final arrival is at least three hours late.
Does Lufthansa pay for a missed flight on a separate ticket?
Usually not under the through-journey rule. Insurance or a separate connection guarantee may cover the loss.
Must Lufthansa reroute me on another airline?
Rerouting must be at the earliest opportunity under comparable conditions. Another airline can be relevant where Lufthansa's own option is unreasonably late.
Are hotel and meals due after a missed connection?
Yes, while awaiting earliest covered rerouting when the wait makes those services necessary, regardless of the cause.
Which airline receives a mixed-carrier claim?
Normally start with the operating carrier of the disrupted flight, then analyse the through contract and any special mixed-carrier facts.
