Lufthansa disruption at Munich: Terminal 2 connections and claims

Short answer: for a Lufthansa connection through Munich on one booking, the relevant delay is arrival at the final destination. Note whether the transfer used Terminal 2, its satellite building, passport control, security or a terminal shuttle. Preserve the gate path, rerouting and final door-opening time instead of relying on a generic connection estimate.

What happened to your flight?

Claim up to €600 for a delayed or cancelled flight.

Choose the situation that applies to your flight:

Munich Airport states that Terminal 2 and its satellite use an underground shuttle train, while a free bus connects Terminals 1 and 2 for transfer passengers. The actual path matters when a late inbound flight leaves only minutes.

Evidence to collect during transfer

  • arrival gate, remote position or bus drop-off;
  • onward gate and every gate change;
  • whether the gate is in Terminal 2 or the satellite;
  • shuttle train or inter-terminal bus time;
  • passport-control and security queue timestamps;
  • onward gate closure or boarding refusal;
  • Lufthansa rebooking and assistance messages;
  • actual arrival at the ticketed final destination.

Photographs of signs and displays create context. A location-stamped phone screenshot is more useful than a later statement that the airport was "very busy."

Terminal 2 and satellite movement

Munich's Terminal 2 uses gates G and H, while its satellite uses J, K and L. The airport says passengers move between those buildings on an underground shuttle train. The train ride itself is short, but walking, vertical circulation, border control and security may add time.

Schengen status affects passport control. A transfer from inside Schengen to a non-Schengen destination normally requires exit control; the reverse normally requires entry control. Some arrivals also require security screening.

Do not claim that every Lufthansa transfer happens entirely within Terminal 2. A partner service can involve Terminal 1. Munich Airport publishes an airside transfer bus between terminals, and the route should be documented if used.

One booking and final destination

Example: Birmingham to Munich to Tokyo is one Lufthansa booking. The Birmingham flight arrives 75 minutes late, Tokyo is missed and the replacement reaches Japan 20 hours late. UK261 starts with the UK departure. Distance and delay are measured to Tokyo.

Example: Delhi to Munich to Madrid, Lufthansa-operated under one ticket. The inbound defect causes a missed connection and Madrid arrival is nine hours late. Lufthansa is an EU carrier, so the third-country departure can still enter EU261 on arrival into the EU.

If the second flight was bought separately, Munich is normally the destination of the first contract. The general Lufthansa connection guide explains why travel insurance may then be more important.

Did Lufthansa sell enough connection time?

Munich Airport says that where connections are booked under one booking number, the airline plans sufficient time for the transfer. That does not guarantee every passenger will connect, but it undermines a bare rejection that the itinerary was "too short" when Lufthansa or its agent sold it as protected.

Passenger conduct still matters. Proceed directly, have required travel documents ready and ask staff for assistance. Record any fast-lane direction. A voluntary stop or missing visa may break the chain, while an unexpectedly late aircraft door, remote bus and border queue support it.

Avoid quoting an unverified universal minimum connection time. It can vary by terminal, Schengen status and airline combination.

Rerouting at Munich

Check automatic rebooking in the Lufthansa app or My bookings, then ask whether an earlier alternative exists. Rerouting can use another Lufthansa Group airline or partner where it reaches the destination sooner under comparable conditions.

If Lufthansa cannot provide suitable transport, ask for written permission before purchasing. Screenshot alternatives, availability and fare class. A Business passenger should request comparable conditions, but should not buy First without necessity and expect automatic reimbursement.

For regional journeys, rail or bus may be practical. Lufthansa publishes coordinated Express Bus connections for Munich and certain cities. A replacement must still complete the ticketed journey, and baggage instructions should be followed.

Care and overnight disruption

Reasonable meals and refreshments are due while waiting for earliest rerouting. If the next feasible departure is the following day, Lufthansa should provide a hotel and airport transport. This remains true where snow, ATC or another extraordinary event caused the original loss.

Save the boarding-pass QR meal voucher and any message saying no hotel is available. If you self-book, keep an itemised invoice and choose a proportionate location. Record transport between airport and hotel; city sightseeing transport is not care.

The Lufthansa care-cost guide provides a receipt schedule.

Amount and cause

Munich is a connection point, not the automatic distance endpoint. A short European final destination may produce EUR 250 or EUR 400. A one-ticket journey to North America or Asia can reach EUR 600. UK-origin long haul uses UK261 and its GBP bands.

Ask what caused the feeder delay. A routine technical problem, rotation failure or ordinary crew issue is usually part of airline activity. Severe weather or ATC restriction can be extraordinary, but Lufthansa must prove causation and reasonable measures, including a reasonable rerouting response.

If the final delay is close to three or four hours, record door opening. Touchdown at Munich or the final airport is not the legal endpoint.

Munich claim structure

State the original route and one-booking evidence. Provide the transfer chronology from the first door opening to the missed gate, without padding it with unrelated airport details. Then list the replacement, final arrival, cause, amount and expenses.

Attach both boarding passes, baggage tag and screenshots. If Lufthansa says the passenger failed to present, ask for the gate scan or closure record and compare it with the transfer timestamps.

FAQ

Is Munich arrival the delay endpoint?

Only when Munich is the ticketed final destination. Through journeys use arrival at the last destination on the booking.

Do Terminal 2 and its satellite require a train?

Yes. Munich Airport states that an underground shuttle train connects the two buildings.

Can a one-ticket connection be rejected as too short?

The airline sold the connection as protected. Passenger conduct matters, but the airline should address the actual delayed transfer rather than only its duration.

Must Lufthansa provide a hotel in Munich?

If covered earliest rerouting requires an overnight wait, hotel and airport transport are part of care, regardless of the disruption cause.

Does a partner flight change the claim recipient?

It can. Identify the operator of the disrupted sector rather than relying on the LH marketing number.
