Iberia missed connection at Madrid-Barajas: rights and evidence
If an Iberia delay causes a missed connection at Madrid-Barajas on one booking, compensation is normally assessed at the final ticketed destination. A feeder that is only 40 minutes late can therefore support EUR 400 or EUR 600 when the replacement reaches the last destination at least three hours late and the cause is within the operating carrier's responsibility. Iberia must reroute and provide reasonable care even when extraordinary circumstances remove the fixed award. Separate self-transfer tickets are materially weaker.

Enter your route, date and type of disruption. We will check whether your case qualifies for a claim under EU 261/2004 or UK261.
What happened to your flight?
Claim up to €600 for a delayed or cancelled flight.
Choose the situation that applies to your flight:
One ticket is the foundation
| Booking structure | Normal treatment |
|---|---|
| Manchester-Madrid-Bogota on one e-ticket | one protected journey under UK261 from UK departure |
| Paris-Madrid-Lima on one e-ticket | one EU261 journey to Lima |
| Lima-Madrid-Rome, Iberia-operated through ticket | EU-carrier inbound coverage can apply |
| two separately purchased tickets joined in an app | each contract usually assessed alone |
One PNR helps, but the e-ticket receipt showing every coupon is stronger. Through-checked baggage and boarding passes issued to the final destination support the connection. A travel app's single timeline is not proof when it merely displays unrelated reservations.
Final arrival controls
The Court of Justice in Folkerts established that compensation on a connecting journey turns on delay at the final destination. The first sector need not itself reach three hours.
Example: Iberia Express operates Dublin-Madrid and arrives 50 minutes late. The Iberia-operated Madrid-Santiago connection closes. Rerouting reaches Chile eight hours late. If both sectors are one booking and the feeder cause qualifies, the protected journey can enter the EUR 600 band.
The reverse can also happen. A passenger waits four hours in Madrid but a faster alternative reaches the final destination only two hours late. Care may be due during the wait, while the usual three-hour fixed threshold is not met.
What to record at Madrid
Madrid-Barajas uses several terminal areas, and Iberia connections may involve passport control or a change between Schengen and non-Schengen flows. Do not rely on memory. Record:
- the feeder's door-opening time;
- arrival terminal and onward gate;
- lawful photos or notes of security and passport queues;
- gate-closing time and when the passenger arrived;
- Iberia's rebooking offer and reason code;
- new boarding pass and final door-opening time.
Proceed directly through the signed transfer route. If the passenger shops, leaves the terminal or ignores boarding calls, Iberia may argue that airline delay did not cause the missed flight. If a state border-control queue was independently decisive, fixed compensation may require closer analysis, while rerouting duties on the through ticket remain.
Rerouting to the earliest reasonable arrival
Iberia should offer transport to the final destination under comparable conditions at the earliest opportunity. That is not always limited to the next Iberia service. Ask staff to examine reasonable partner or alternative routings when they arrive materially sooner.
Record available options before buying one yourself. If Iberia refuses or offers an unjustifiably late itinerary, a proportionate replacement fare can be recoverable. Preserve screenshots, desk conversations and receipts. Avoid an unnecessary premium cabin when a comparable economy option exists.
Care at the transfer point
During a long wait Iberia must provide reasonable meals and refreshments, communication, and hotel plus transfers where an overnight stay is necessary. These rights survive severe weather and ATC restrictions.
If vouchers are unusable because outlets are closed or no hotel is arranged, buy reasonably and keep itemised receipts. State these expenses separately from fixed compensation. A EUR 600 award does not absorb a required hotel bill.
Which airline receives the claim?
The operator of the sector that caused the missed connection is central. Iberia, Iberia Express and Air Nostrum are distinct operators despite the IB-facing booking experience. A partner can also operate a codeshare.
Read the boarding pass and e-ticket “operated by” line. If Iberia Express delayed Dublin-Madrid, direct the operational claim to Iberia Express and explain the final delay. If Iberia operated the long-haul cancellation, Iberia is the target. The operating-carrier guide gives examples.
Compensation and distance
On a through booking, the distance band normally runs from first departure to final destination on a great-circle basis. Do not add flown sectors. EU261 pays EUR 250, EUR 400 or EUR 600; UK261 uses GBP 220, GBP 350 or GBP 520.
For a protected EU journey over 3,500 km, quick rerouting can reduce EUR 600 to EUR 300 if final arrival is within the Article 7 window. The Iberia long-haul guide covers the reduction.
Stopovers and separate tickets
A deliberate multi-day Madrid stopover is not an involuntary missed connection. If the later flight is disrupted, assess that later journey from its own scheduled start. Similarly, an overnight gap can still be a connection if it was ticketed as the next available service, but evidence matters.
With self-transfer tickets, Iberia normally owes remedies only for its disrupted contract. An OTA connection guarantee, package organiser or travel insurer may add contractual protection, but it does not convert two tickets into one EU261 journey.
A useful claim chronology
List the full route, ticket number, operating carrier of each sector, scheduled and actual feeder time, closed connection, offered rerouting and final arrival. Attach old and new boarding passes, baggage tags, notices and receipts. Ask Iberia to assess the final destination rather than only the first flight.
Use the Iberia claim-form guide and keep the submission receipt. Where Iberia replies that the feeder was under three hours late, cite the through booking and final arrival evidence.
FAQ
Can a 40-minute feeder delay qualify for compensation?
Yes. On one booking, it can qualify when it causes a missed connection and final arrival is at least three hours late, subject to coverage and cause.
Must Iberia rebook me on another airline?
Iberia owes earliest reasonable rerouting under comparable conditions. Whether another airline is required depends on actual availability and how much earlier it reaches the destination.
Are meals and a hotel due during bad weather?
Yes. Extraordinary weather may remove fixed compensation, but not reasonable care while waiting for rerouting.
Are two self-transfer tickets protected as one journey?
Usually not under EU261 or UK261. Check any separate OTA guarantee, package rights or insurance.
Does a planned Madrid stopover count as connection delay?
No. A voluntary stopover is part of the booked plan. A disruption to the later flight is assessed from that segment's own itinerary.
