Iberia EUR 600 compensation on long-haul flights
EUR 600 is the top EU261 fixed amount for an Iberia journey over 3,500 km that reaches its final destination at least three hours late, is cancelled without compliant notice or involves involuntary denied boarding. Iberia's EU-carrier status means eligible long-haul routes can include both Europe-to-Americas flights and Iberia-operated returns into the EU. Fast rerouting may reduce EUR 600 to EUR 300, but only when final arrival fits the statutory four-hour reduction window.

All four must be assessed. A long distance does not create payment after a two-hour delay, and a six-hour wait does not create EUR 600 on a short route.
Which distance counts
For one booking with connections, Court of Justice case law measures the great-circle distance from first departure to final destination, without adding the connecting sectors. A Manchester-Madrid-Mexico City itinerary therefore uses Manchester to Mexico City, not Manchester-Madrid plus Madrid-Mexico City.
On separate tickets, each contract is normally assessed separately. A short feeder bought independently does not borrow the distance of the long-haul ticket. Preserve the e-ticket receipt showing whether the sectors form one reservation.
Examples
Madrid-New York delayed 4h 30m: EU departure, distance over 3,500 km and final delay over three hours. EUR 600 can be due if the cause was within Iberia's responsibility.
Lima-Madrid operated by Iberia, delayed five hours: Iberia is an EU carrier arriving into the EU. The inbound direction can qualify for EUR 600.
London-Madrid-Buenos Aires on one booking: UK261 starts at the UK departure and uses sterling bands; the top amount is GBP 520. Do not add a second EU261 award for the same journey.
Paris-Madrid-Bogota, rerouted and arriving 3h 35m late: the EUR 600 band is reached, but Article 7 may permit reduction to EUR 300 because the long-haul replacement arrival is within four hours.
When EUR 600 becomes EUR 300
The 50% reduction is not a general discount. For the over-3,500-km category, the replacement transport must reach the final destination no more than four hours after the original schedule. The reduction most often matters after cancellation or denied boarding, where prompt rerouting is offered.
If arrival is 4h 01m late, the reduction window is missed. Record door-opening time. If Iberia simply states “rerouted, therefore 50%,” ask for the scheduled and actual final arrival used in its calculation.
Amount is per passenger
A couple has two claims; a family of five can have five. Children travelling on issued tickets are not excluded merely because the fare was lower. Award tickets publicly available through Iberia Club can also qualify because EU261 expressly includes commercial frequent-flyer programmes.
Create a table with passenger name, ticket number, regime and amount. This helps prevent payment only to the lead passenger. The Avios guide distinguishes fixed compensation from points refunds.
Refund and expenses are additional questions
EUR 600 does not replace a cancelled-ticket refund, rerouting duty or required hotel. Keep each remedy separate:
- fixed compensation for qualifying disruption;
- refund of unused travel or rerouting;
- care supplied during waiting;
- reimbursement of reasonable care or replacement-transport costs Iberia failed to provide.
If Iberia pays EUR 600 but ignores a documented hotel, pursue the hotel line. If it refunds a cancelled ticket, fixed compensation may still remain. Avoid signing settlement language without knowing which items it closes.
Operator can change the inbound answer
An IB code on a South America-Madrid ticket is not enough. Iberia-operated inbound flights can be covered because Iberia is an EU carrier. A non-EU partner operating the same direction normally does not gain that status from the codeshare.
Check the “operated by” line, boarding pass and flight documentation. Iberia Express and Air Nostrum are also distinct EU operators. Direct the claim to the airline that supplied the aircraft and crew on the disrupted sector. See the operator guide.
Cause and mitigation
Severe weather, an airport closure or binding ATC decision can be extraordinary. Routine technical defects usually are not. Even a qualifying event removes EUR 600 only if it caused the disruption and could not have been avoided despite reasonable measures.
Ask for the event, time, affected rotation and recovery steps. Other Iberia flights operating normally do not by themselves disprove the defence, but they can justify asking why this aircraft or crew could not be recovered.
Evidence and submission
Save the full itinerary, ticket numbers, operator, original and revised schedule, all boarding passes, final door-opening time, Iberia notices and receipts. Calculate distance with a reliable great-circle tool, but describe the endpoints rather than presenting false kilometre precision.
Submit EUR 600 or EUR 300 per passenger through the Iberia claim form guide. Explain any one-ticket connection and attach proof. If Iberia calculates only the Madrid sector, restate the first departure and final destination.
UK departures use sterling, not EUR 600
An Iberia flight leaving London, Manchester or another UK airport is assessed under UK261. The top fixed band is GBP 520, with a potential reduction to GBP 260 under the corresponding rerouting rule. A Madrid departure remains under EU261 in euros. On a return booking, the outbound and inbound disruptions can therefore use different currencies and regulators even though Iberia operates both.
Do not convert GBP 520 into euros and call it an EU261 award. Identify the disrupted direction, first departure and applicable regime. If both outbound and return suffer separate qualifying events, assess each event independently; never duplicate EU261 and UK261 for the same flight.

Does every Iberia transatlantic delay pay EUR 600?
No. Coverage, distance, final delay, event type and cause must all qualify.
Can Iberia reduce EUR 600 to EUR 300?

Is EUR 600 paid per booking?
