Finnair flight compensation: delays, cancellations and EU261
A Finnair-operated flight can qualify for EUR 250, EUR 400 or EUR 600 under EU261 when it arrives at the final destination at least three hours late, is cancelled without a qualifying alternative, or the passenger is involuntarily denied boarding. Finnair is an EU airline, so the regulation can cover both its departures from Europe and its own flights back to the EU from Asia, North America or another non-EU country. The result still depends on the operating carrier, one-ticket journey, notice, cause and actual arrival.

This page is the starting point. Use the dedicated guides below for the exact problem, then use the flight compensation calculator with the complete itinerary rather than one delayed sector.
Finnair claim in one table
| Event | Main question | Possible EU261 remedy |
|---|---|---|
| Arrival delay | Did the passenger reach the last destination on one booking 3+ hours late? | EUR 250-600 if Finnair cannot prove extraordinary circumstances |
| Cancellation | When was notice sent and what replacement was offered? | Refund or rerouting, care and sometimes EUR 250-600 |
| Missed connection | Were the sectors on one reservation? | Assessment at the final ticketed destination |
| Denied boarding | Did the passenger volunteer or was boarding refused involuntarily? | Immediate fixed compensation, rerouting or refund, and care |
| Cabin downgrade | Which paid sector was flown in a lower cabin? | 30%, 50% or 75% reimbursement of the affected sector price |
| Baggage problem | Was a report and written claim made on time? | Proven loss under the Montreal Convention, not EU261 delay compensation |
Ticket price and cabin do not decide the fixed EUR amount. Distance and the loss of time do. Each eligible passenger is assessed separately, including a child with a paid seat and a publicly available Finnair Plus award ticket.
Why Finnair's EU status matters
EU261 covers every flight departing from an EU/EEA airport, regardless of airline nationality. It also covers a flight arriving in that area from a third country when the operating airline is an EU carrier and the passenger has not already received equivalent benefits for the same event under the departure country's law.
Finnair is established in Finland. A Finnair-operated Tokyo-Helsinki flight can therefore be within EU261 even though it starts in Japan. That differs from an inbound flight operated by a Japanese or US airline. On a codeshare, the AY number is not decisive: read the words "operated by" on the itinerary. The Finnair and Norra operator guide explains how to separate Finnair, Nordic Regional Airlines and partner operations.
The direction rule becomes especially important on mixed bookings. If a partner operates the long-haul sector, its identity may change territorial coverage and the correct respondent. Keep the original confirmation and any reissued ticket because both show which carrier undertook each flight.
Delay compensation uses final arrival
For a straightforward direct flight, compare scheduled arrival with the time at which at least one aircraft door opened and passengers could leave. A late take-off is not enough by itself. A flight may depart four hours late and recover time, or depart only 90 minutes late but create a much longer arrival delay after a missed connection.
For one reservation through Helsinki, measure the last ticketed destination. Edinburgh-Helsinki-Tokyo arriving in Tokyo four hours late can be assessed as one journey even if the first sector was delayed by less than three hours. Two independently purchased tickets usually do not receive that protection: Finnair may owe rights for its own contract, but it is not automatically responsible for a self-arranged onward flight.
Read the Finnair delayed-flight guide for cause analysis and the Helsinki connection guide for single-ticket evidence.
Cancellation creates choices before compensation
When Finnair cancels a covered flight, the immediate decision is normally between reimbursement and rerouting. Reimbursement ends the airline's duty to carry the passenger on the unused itinerary. Rerouting preserves the journey and should be offered at the earliest opportunity under comparable conditions, or on a later date when seats are available if that is the passenger's preference.
Fixed compensation is a separate question. Notice sent at least 14 days before departure usually removes the fixed sum, but it does not remove the refund-or-rerouting choice. With shorter notice, the timings of the replacement and the reason for cancellation matter. Severe weather or an air traffic restriction may defeat EUR 250-600 while leaving care and transport duties intact.
Do not accept a voucher merely because the email presents it first. A voluntary credit can be useful, but statutory reimbursement should be paid in money unless the passenger gives informed agreement to another form. The Finnair cancellation page separates all three remedies.
Standard EU261 amounts
| Journey distance | Standard amount per eligible passenger |
|---|---|
| Up to 1,500 km | EUR 250 |
| Intra-EU over 1,500 km, and other journeys from 1,500 to 3,500 km | EUR 400 |
| Other journeys over 3,500 km | EUR 600 |
On a long-distance reroute, the airline may reduce EUR 600 to EUR 300 when the passenger reaches the final destination within the statutory four-hour window. It is not a general 50% discount for accepting a replacement flight. Calculate distance to the final destination on the protected booking and retain the actual replacement arrival.
The fixed sum can coexist with reimbursement of reasonable care costs. It can also coexist with a ticket refund when the legal tests for both are met. It should not be subtracted from documented meals or an overnight room because those payments answer different losses.
Causes: what Finnair must prove
Ordinary operational problems usually remain within airline activity. Routine technical defects, crew planning, a late inbound rotation and preventable handling failures should not be accepted as extraordinary merely because the rejection uses a broad label.
External weather, air traffic management restrictions, airport closure, security risk and some third-party industrial action may qualify. Finnair must connect the event to the particular flight and show that reasonable measures could not have avoided the long delay or cancellation. A snowstorm somewhere in the network is not, by itself, an explanation for every later rotation.
Ask for the event, location, time, causal sequence and measures considered. The answer can reveal whether the disruption was directly caused by an external event or by later airline resource decisions. Care remains due during a covered wait even where extraordinary circumstances remove the fixed payment.
Evidence and the correct Finnair channel
Keep the e-ticket, booking reference, original and replacement boarding passes, all disruption messages, the operated-by line and a record of actual arrival. For cancellation, retain the timestamp of the first notice and every option offered. For a connection, preserve the entire itinerary. Itemise meals, hotel and airport transfers with receipts.
Finnair separates ticket refunds from feedback and compensation. Its current feedback and compensation page directs EU261 requests to an online process and says claims should be filed within two months. The Finnish Consumer Disputes Board gives a five-month filing instruction for standard compensation before a case reaches it. Because those positions are not the same as a simple civil limitation period, submit promptly rather than testing the boundary.
State the legal basis, initial departure, final destination, operator, scheduled and actual arrival, reason supplied and amount requested. A short evidence table is more useful than an emotional narrative. Save the case number and attach documents through the case channel if Finnair asks for more information.
Passenger-rights position checked on 15 August 2026. The adopted EU reform, including a future nine-month request period and airline response deadline, is not yet the rule applied to these journeys.
FAQ
Does EU261 cover a Finnair flight from Asia to Helsinki?
It can. Finnair is an EU operating carrier, so its own inbound flight may be covered even when departure is outside Europe.
Is an AY flight number proof that Finnair operated the aircraft?
No. Norra and partner airlines can operate flights sold with an AY code. Check the operated-by statement.
Can I claim both EUR 600 and my hotel bill?
Yes, when each test is met. Fixed compensation and reasonable care expenses are separate entitlements.
Does bad weather remove the right to rerouting?
No. It may remove fixed compensation, but covered passengers can still have rights to care, reimbursement or rerouting.
How soon should I send a Finnair claim?
Send it as soon as the journey and evidence are complete. Finnair currently asks for EU261 claims within two months.
