Finnair cancelled flight: refund, rerouting and compensation

When Finnair cancels a covered flight, the passenger normally chooses between reimbursement and rerouting; EUR 250-600 may be due in addition when notice was late, the replacement was not sufficiently close to schedule and Finnair cannot prove extraordinary circumstances. Do not merge those remedies. Refund answers whether the passenger still travels, care supports the wait, and fixed compensation addresses inconvenience.

Choose the situation that applies to your flight:

Finnair currently allows many direct-booking cancellations to be handled through Manage Booking and provides a refund form when self-service is unavailable. Compensation and expense claims use its feedback and compensation process.

Immediate cancellation decision

Passenger's objectiveRequest from FinnairMain consequence
End the unused journeyReimbursement of unused ticket partsFinnair no longer has to carry the passenger on those parts
Travel as soon as possibleRerouting at the earliest opportunityAirline should find reasonable transport under comparable conditions
Travel on a chosen later dateLater rerouting, subject to seatsUseful when the trip still has value later
Continue after part of the journey became pointlessReturn to the first departure plus reimbursementAvailable in the conditions set by Article 8

Ask for the chosen option in writing. Do not cancel voluntarily under fare rules if Finnair has already cancelled the flight, because a voluntary workflow can produce different fees and conditions. The refund, voucher and rerouting guide compares the practical effects.

When fixed compensation is possible

The 14-day notice rule is only the beginning. Compensation is generally unavailable when Finnair proves notice at least 14 days before departure. With less notice, the replacement schedule matters:

Notice before departureAlternative that can avoid compensation
7-14 daysLeaves no more than 2 hours early and arrives less than 4 hours late
Less than 7 daysLeaves no more than 1 hour early and arrives less than 2 hours late

If no sufficiently close alternative was offered, the normal EUR 250, 400 or 600 band can apply. Finnair can still defend the fixed sum by proving extraordinary circumstances and reasonable measures. The burden is not met by a generic email saying "operational reasons" or "circumstances beyond our control."

Notice must reach the passenger, not merely be entered into an internal system. If an agent or online seller supplied the wrong contact details, preserve what was provided at booking and when the cancellation first became visible. Allocation of proof can be fact-sensitive, especially where a package organiser or intermediary controlled messages.

A replacement flight may still be too late

Accepting rerouting does not automatically waive compensation. Compare the offered departure and arrival with the original schedule using the statutory windows above. If the replacement itself later suffers a qualifying long delay, it may require a separate analysis.

The Court of Justice's Finnair judgment C-832/18 confirmed that passengers who received cancellation compensation could also claim for a distinct qualifying delay on the rerouting flight operated by the same carrier. This is not automatic double recovery for one event; it recognises two separate serious disruptions.

For a one-ticket journey, use the final destination. If Finnair cancels Manchester-Helsinki and reroutes the passenger to Tokyo six hours late, Tokyo may control the arrival calculation. Preserve the entire original and replacement itinerary.

Cause and reasonable measures

Routine aircraft faults, crew shortages and ordinary airline planning problems usually do not meet the extraordinary-circumstances defence. Weather, air traffic restrictions, airport closure, security risk and some third-party strikes may do so when they directly caused the cancellation.

Even then, Finnair should show what reasonable alternatives were examined. Relevant questions include whether another aircraft, crew, routing or partner service was realistically available; how long the external restriction lasted; and why later flights could or could not operate. EU261 does not require intolerable sacrifice, but it does require more than naming an external category.

Care, reimbursement and rerouting do not disappear merely because the fixed sum is excused. A passenger stranded overnight after a weather cancellation can still require accommodation, meals and airport transport while awaiting rerouting.

Reimbursement scope and timing

Statutory reimbursement concerns the ticket price for unused travel and, where the completed part no longer serves the original plan, the relevant completed part plus a return to the first point of departure. Current EU261 says reimbursement should be made within seven days. Finnair's commercial pages and processing queues do not replace that legal rule.

For a direct Finnair purchase, Manage Booking may create an automated refund. If the booking came from a travel agent, the ticket issuer or merchant may need to process the money, while compensation remains directed to the operating carrier. Keep a screenshot of the cancelled status and refund selection.

Finnair's voluntary refund form can mention service fees for some fare-based cancellations. A fee linked to voluntarily abandoning a valid Light, Classic or award booking should not be imported into an involuntary statutory reimbursement after Finnair cancels the service.

Voucher or gift card offers

A voucher requires informed choice. It may have a bonus or suit a passenger who will book Finnair again, but compare validity, transferability, currencies, fare restrictions and what happens to unused value. Do not accept a credit merely to unlock a button when the preferred remedy is money.

Finnair has a distinctive compensation gift card that may add value above the cash amount and can be convertible back to the original cash amount under stated conditions. That product is different from a ticket-refund voucher. The cash or gift card guide explains the conversion consequences.

Evidence checklist and claim wording

Retain:

  • the original booking and ticket number;
  • the operated-by line for every cancelled sector;
  • Finnair's cancellation email with full timestamp;
  • every rerouting option and when it was offered;
  • original and replacement schedules;
  • actual final arrival if travel continued; and
  • itemised receipts for care Finnair did not provide.

Write the request in separate headings: Article 8 remedy, Article 7 fixed compensation and Article 9 care costs. State the amount per passenger and avoid asking for "a refund" without saying whether it concerns the unused fare, self-booked replacement transport or expenses.

If Finnair rejects compensation, request the exact event, its effect on the aircraft rotation and the measures considered. The rejected-claim guide gives a response framework.

Current rights and Finnair channels checked on 15 August 2026. The EU reform adopted in July 2026 has a later application date and is not used as current procedure here.

FAQ

Must I accept the replacement Finnair offers?

No. A covered cancellation normally gives a choice between reimbursement and rerouting, subject to the conditions of Article 8.

Does accepting rerouting cancel my compensation claim?

No. Fixed compensation remains a separate test based on notice, replacement timings, cause and route.

Can Finnair give only a voucher?

Not for a statutory cash reimbursement without the passenger's informed agreement to the alternative.

Does weather remove my hotel right?

No. Extraordinary weather may remove the fixed sum, but care can remain due while the passenger waits for rerouting.

What if my ticket was bought through an agent?

The ticket issuer may process reimbursement, while an EU261 compensation claim is generally made against the operating airline.
