Finnair refund, voucher or rerouting after disruption
After Finnair cancels a covered flight, the passenger normally chooses cash reimbursement or rerouting; a voucher requires informed agreement and should not be imposed. A departure delay of at least five hours can also create a reimbursement choice. Pick the option that matches whether the journey still has value, because accepting a refund generally ends Finnair's duty to carry the passenger on unused parts.

Enter your route, date and type of disruption. We will check whether your case qualifies for a claim under EU 261/2004 or UK261.
What happened to your flight?
Claim up to €600 for a delayed or cancelled flight.
Choose the situation that applies to your flight:
Fixed EU261 compensation and care costs are separate. Choosing rerouting does not automatically waive EUR 250-600.
Compare the three options
| Option | Best when | Main risk |
|---|---|---|
| Cash reimbursement | The trip no longer serves its purpose | Unused transport ends and replacement prices may be higher |
| Rerouting at earliest opportunity | Arrival still matters | Passenger may accept an unnecessarily late Finnair-only option |
| Rerouting on later chosen date | The trip can be postponed | Seat availability applies |
| Voluntary voucher or credit | Passenger expects suitable future Finnair travel | Expiry, restrictions and insolvency exposure |
Ask Finnair to record the selected Article 8 option. Do not rely on a phone conversation where the booking later shows "passenger cancelled."
Cash reimbursement
Reimbursement covers unused ticket parts and, where completed travel no longer serves the original plan, can include the relevant completed part plus return to the first departure point. Current EU261 requires payment within seven days after the qualifying choice.
For direct Finnair bookings, Manage Booking may provide an automated refund. The refund form is the fallback when self-service is unavailable. Agency-issued tickets can require the issuer or merchant to return the money.
Payment should go to the original form unless the passenger knowingly accepts another method. Finnair fare-rule service fees for voluntary cancellation should not reduce involuntary statutory reimbursement.
Rerouting at the earliest opportunity
Rerouting should reach the final destination under comparable transport conditions. When Finnair's next service is much later, ask for suitable partner or other-airline capacity. EU case law and Commission guidance do not confine rerouting to the cancelling airline's own aircraft where a reasonable earlier solution exists.
The passenger should give Finnair a practical opportunity to arrange transport. If it refuses, offers no timely option or cannot be contacted during an urgent situation, preserve screenshots of alternatives and buy a proportionate replacement rather than an upgrade chosen for preference.
Do not accept a refund if you still expect Finnair to reimburse a new ticket as rerouting. The alternative transport page explains the proof needed for self-booking.
Rerouting at a later date
Article 8 also allows travel on a later date at the passenger's convenience, subject to seat availability. This can suit a visit or holiday that still has value later but not today.
Record that the later date is chosen under cancellation rerouting rights rather than a voluntary fare change. Comparable transport conditions matter, and Finnair should not charge a fare difference for the statutory replacement.
Hotel and meals until a date chosen solely for personal convenience are not necessarily owed for the entire gap. Care is linked to rerouting at the earliest opportunity, while later-date choice changes the practical duty.
Voucher and credit consent
EU261 permits travel vouchers only with signed or otherwise informed passenger agreement. Compare monetary value, validity, transferability, currencies, permitted routes and whether unused balance survives. Save the terms in force when accepted.
A ticket-refund voucher is different from Finnair's regulatory compensation gift card. One replaces unused fare; the other is an optional form for a fixed compensation award and may carry a bonus. Do not let labels obscure which debt is being settled.
If a voucher was accepted under misleading or coercive presentation, preserve the screen and ask Finnair to explain the consent record. The legal effect depends on the terms and facts.
Fixed compensation after choosing transport
A cancellation with less than 14 days' notice can produce EUR 250, 400 or 600 if no sufficiently close replacement was offered and no extraordinary circumstances are proved. Acceptance of rerouting does not erase that assessment.
Refund can also coexist with fixed compensation where the cancellation conditions are met. The ticket money and Article 7 lump sum serve different purposes. Do not agree to language releasing compensation unless you understand it.
Care costs during the wait are added separately. A passenger who chooses immediate reimbursement and ends travel cannot demand indefinite hotel accommodation after the transport obligation ends.
Finnair schedule changes and refund policy
Finnair says disruption reimbursement is available when it cancels a flight, when a schedule change is at least one hour and the alternative is unsuitable, after a departure delay over five hours where the passenger abandons travel, or after certain overbooking situations.
These published options support practical processing. They do not narrow statutory EU261 rights where the original flight has legally been cancelled or brought forward by more than one hour. Keep both itineraries and the notice date.
Changes under one hour can fall under fare rules unless other facts amount to cancellation or a material contractual change.
One booking and partial travel
For a connected itinerary, the choice concerns the ticketed journey, not only the cancelled coupon. If a passenger has reached Helsinki but cannot continue and the trip is pointless, explain why the completed segment no longer serves the plan and request return to the first departure where Article 8 applies.
If the passenger still wants to reach Tokyo, Toronto or another final city, request through rerouting. Do not allow a refund of only the cancelled regional sector to leave the remaining booking unusable without an explicit choice.
Separate tickets require separate requests. Finnair is not automatically responsible for refunding another carrier's independent contract.
Evidence and wording
Save the original ticket, cancellation or five-hour delay message, every rerouting option, voucher terms, chosen remedy and confirmation. If an agent is involved, keep the ticket issuer and merchant details.
Write:
Following Finnair's cancellation of [flight/date], I choose [reimbursement / rerouting at earliest opportunity / later rerouting] under Article 8. This is an involuntary disruption request. I do not consent to a voucher in place of money [if applicable]. My separate Article 7 compensation and Article 9 expense claims are reserved.
Use the refund route for ticket money and feedback and compensation for fixed amounts or care. The Finnair cancellation guide applies notice rules.

FAQ
Must I accept a Finnair voucher?
No. A voucher is voluntary and requires informed agreement; statutory reimbursement can be requested in money.
Does a cash refund cancel my rerouting right?
Generally yes for the unused travel, because reimbursement and rerouting are alternative Article 8 choices.
Can I accept rerouting and still claim EUR 600?
Yes, if the separate cancellation, distance, timing and cause conditions support the fixed amount.
Can Finnair reroute only on its own flights?
Not necessarily. A reasonable earlier other-airline option can matter when Finnair's service is substantially later.
Who refunds a ticket issued by a travel agent?
The agent or ticket issuer may process the fare, while the operating carrier remains responsible for EU261 compensation.
