Finnair delayed flight compensation
A delayed Finnair flight can produce EUR 250-600 per passenger when the protected journey reaches its final ticketed destination at least three hours late and Finnair cannot prove extraordinary circumstances plus reasonable measures. Measure arrival, not the departure-board delay. Keep compensation separate from the right to meals, accommodation, rerouting and reimbursement after a long wait.

Enter your route, date and type of disruption. We will check whether your case qualifies for a claim under EU 261/2004 or UK261.
What happened to your flight?
Claim up to €600 for a delayed or cancelled flight.
Choose the situation that applies to your flight:
Start by confirming that Finnair or another EU airline actually operated the relevant flight. An AY marketing code alone does not settle responsibility. Then reconstruct the complete reservation and use the Finnair compensation calculator with the final destination.
The four-part delay test
| Test | Evidence to use | Common error |
|---|---|---|
| EU261 coverage | Airports, direction and operating carrier | Assuming only EU departures qualify for Finnair |
| Protected journey | One e-ticket or reservation covering connections | Calculating only the visibly delayed sector |
| Arrival threshold | Scheduled arrival and door-opening time | Using take-off delay as the final result |
| Airline defence | Specific cause and measures taken | Accepting "operational reasons" without detail |
Nationality, residence and the currency used to buy the ticket do not control EU261. A passenger from Australia can be protected on a Finnair-operated Bangkok-Helsinki-London booking, while a European passenger can fall outside a particular rule when a different operator and separate contract change the analysis.
Which Finnair delays fall within EU261?
Every flight leaving the EU/EEA is territorially covered, whether operated by Finnair or a partner. An arrival from outside that area is also covered when Finnair is the operating carrier, subject to the regulation's rule against duplicate benefits already received in the departure country.
This gives Finnair passengers broader inbound coverage than travellers on many non-EU airlines. Seoul-Helsinki can be within EU261 when Finnair operates it. If the same sector is operated by a non-EU codeshare partner, the mere AY number does not import Finnair's status. The operator guide shows where to find the decisive wording.
United Kingdom journeys require a parallel check. A departure from the UK is protected by UK261, and some Finnair-operated arrivals may also be covered because Finnair is an EU carrier. Claiming under two systems does not permit double payment for the same inconvenience.
Final arrival decides the threshold
Actual arrival is normally the point when at least one aircraft door opens and passengers may leave, not touchdown or parking. Record that time in the destination time zone, and compare it with the scheduled arrival shown on the original ticket. Do not mix local times where daylight-saving changes differ.
On one booking, measure the last destination. Suppose Oslo-Helsinki-Osaka is sold as a continuous itinerary. The first flight arrives 80 minutes late, the passenger misses the protected connection, and Finnair reroutes them to Osaka six hours after schedule. The relevant loss of time is six hours at Osaka. The distance assessment also uses the protected journey rather than automatically treating Helsinki-Osaka as an isolated claim.
Separate tickets work differently. If a passenger independently bought Tallinn-Helsinki and Helsinki-Tokyo, the first contract's delay does not automatically make that carrier liable for the second ticket. Travel insurance or proven contractual loss may matter, but the EU261 final-destination principle is not a free transfer guarantee between unrelated bookings.
Borderline cases are covered in the three-hour Finnair guide.
Amounts for a qualifying delay
| Distance category | Arrival delay | Normal amount |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 1,500 km | 3 hours or more | EUR 250 |
| Relevant 1,500-3,500 km band | 3 hours or more | EUR 400 |
| Other journeys over 3,500 km | 3 to under 4 hours | EUR 300 may apply |
| Other journeys over 3,500 km | 4 hours or more | EUR 600 |
The long-haul reduction is conditional. It does not follow simply because the airline gave a replacement flight or because a passenger accepted rerouting. Use the actual arrival delay at the last protected destination.
Amounts are per eligible traveller. A family of four can therefore have four fixed claims, while shared taxi or hotel receipts should be claimed only once at their actual cost. A low fare does not reduce EUR 250-600, and Business Class does not increase it.
Airline-controlled and external causes
Routine defects and normal airline operations are generally not extraordinary. In the Finnair case C-832/18, the Court of Justice confirmed that a failure of an "on condition" aircraft part is not automatically extraordinary merely because the carrier keeps a spare. The airline must still prove an event outside normal activity and control.
Severe weather incompatible with safe operation, air traffic management instructions, airport closure, security events and some external strikes can qualify. Finnair must show the causal connection to the claimed delay and the reasonable steps taken. When an external event ends but a later delay results from aircraft or crew positioning choices, the chain deserves separate examination.
A rerouting flight can generate a new fixed claim if it independently suffers a qualifying long delay and the legal conditions are met. C-832/18 arose from a Finnair cancellation followed by a seriously delayed replacement operated by the same carrier. That does not mean every itinerary pays twice; it means each distinct disruption must be analysed on its facts.
Care starts before three-hour compensation
Right-to-care thresholds depend on distance and expected departure delay. They can begin at two, three or four hours, before a three-hour final arrival is known. Finnair should provide reasonable refreshments, communication and, where an overnight stay becomes necessary, accommodation plus transport between the airport and lodging.
Care is due during a covered disruption even when weather or air traffic control ultimately removes fixed compensation. If no practical assistance is offered, buy modest necessities and retain itemised receipts. Ask Finnair staff or chat for written confirmation before arranging an unusually expensive room or distant taxi where time allows.
At five hours of departure delay, a passenger may decide the trip no longer serves its purpose and choose reimbursement under Article 8. That choice is different from travelling and later claiming for late arrival. The five-hour delay guide explains the consequences.
Build a claim Finnair can verify
Preserve the booking confirmation, ticket number, boarding passes and all reissued documents. Save app notifications and email timestamps. Note scheduled and actual final arrival, the first open-door time if available, staff explanations and the exact alternative offered. Photograph display boards only with readable flight and time details.
In the claim, state:
- the operating carrier for each relevant sector;
- the first departure and final destination on one reservation;
- scheduled and actual arrival at that final point;
- the explanation supplied by Finnair;
- the EU261 amount requested per passenger; and
- a separate table of care expenses and receipts.
Use Finnair's feedback and compensation channel for fixed compensation and care expenses. A ticket reimbursement request has a separate route. Submit promptly: Finnair currently asks for EU261 claims within two months, even though Finnish escalation guidance and court limitation questions are distinct.
Rules and Finnair procedures checked on 15 August 2026. Future EU reform provisions are not treated here as current law.
FAQ
Is three hours late at departure enough?
No. Fixed delay compensation normally depends on arrival at the final protected destination at least three hours late.
Can a Finnair flight from Japan qualify under EU261?
Yes, when Finnair actually operates the inbound flight and the other territorial conditions are satisfied.
What if only the first connection was late?
On one booking, use the arrival delay at the last ticketed destination, even if the first sector lost less than three hours.
Does a technical problem always qualify for compensation?
Not always, but an ordinary operational defect is generally not extraordinary. Finnair must identify and prove any exceptional defence.
Can I recover meals when there is no fixed compensation?
Yes. Care duties can remain during protected weather, air traffic or other extraordinary disruptions.
