Finnair five-hour delay: refund or continue travelling?
When a covered Finnair departure is delayed by at least five hours, the passenger can normally abandon the affected journey and request reimbursement; if completed travel no longer serves the original plan, a return to the first departure point may also be required. This is a choice, not an automatic cancellation. Travelling onward instead can preserve a later fixed-compensation claim based on final arrival.

Enter your route, date and type of disruption. We will check whether your case qualifies for a claim under EU 261/2004 or UK261.
What happened to your flight?
Claim up to €600 for a delayed or cancelled flight.
Choose the situation that applies to your flight:
The five-hour rule measures the delay at departure for the reimbursement option. It should not be confused with the three-hour final-arrival test for EUR 250-600 or with Finnair's commercial refund conditions.
Decide what outcome still has value
| Situation after five hours | Practical request | Effect on later analysis |
|---|---|---|
| Trip no longer serves its purpose | Reimbursement of unused travel | Passenger stops the unused journey |
| Passenger is stranded mid-journey and completed sectors are pointless | Reimbursement plus return to first departure | Article 8 conditions must be shown |
| Passenger still needs to arrive | Rerouting and continuing care | Final arrival may support fixed compensation |
| Passenger buys another ticket without asking Finnair | Possible cost claim, but higher evidence risk | Must prove airline failure and proportional response |
Tell Finnair clearly whether you choose reimbursement or still require carriage. Silence, missing a replacement flight or pressing a voluntary cancellation button can create avoidable disputes.
Five hours at departure, three hours at arrival
These thresholds protect different interests. Article 6 links a five-hour delay to the reimbursement choice in Article 8. Fixed delay compensation comes from case law applying Article 7 when final arrival is at least three hours late, subject to the extraordinary-circumstances defence.
A Finnair service can therefore create both questions. Suppose Helsinki-New York is expected to depart six hours late. A passenger abandons the trip and obtains the unused fare. Whether fixed compensation also applies depends on route coverage, cause and the legal treatment of that disruption. Another passenger takes the delayed flight and arrives 5 hours 20 minutes late; that traveller's fixed claim is assessed by final arrival.
Do not assume reimbursement replaces every other right. Equally, do not claim late-arrival compensation when the passenger did not travel and no cancellation or comparable compensable event occurred without explaining the legal basis.
Which flights receive the EU261 choice?
Every Finnair journey departing from the EU/EEA can be covered. A Finnair-operated inbound flight from a third country can also fall within EU261 because Finnair is an EU carrier. UK departures require UK261 analysis, which contains a similar five-hour delay choice.
The operating carrier matters on codeshares. If an AY number is operated by a partner, identify that company before addressing the request. Norra also operates many domestic and European flights under AY numbers. Use the Finnair and Norra guide when the confirmation is unclear.
On a connected itinerary, the five-hour event concerns the affected departure, while reimbursement can extend to ticket parts made useless by the disruption. Keep the fare construction and all coupons so the requested scope is intelligible.
Reimbursement after part of the journey
Article 8 is broader than refunding only an unflown segment. Where a passenger has already travelled but the disruption means the journey no longer serves the original plan, reimbursement can include the part already made and a return flight to the first point of departure at the earliest opportunity.
Example: a passenger flies London-Helsinki on one ticket to attend a time-critical event in Rovaniemi. The protected Helsinki-Rovaniemi departure is delayed beyond five hours, and no arrival can preserve the trip's purpose. The passenger should document the event timing, ask Finnair in writing for the Article 8 return option and avoid self-booking until Finnair has a reasonable opportunity to respond.
Personal preference alone is weaker than an objectively frustrated journey. Explain what the ticketed purpose required and why the remaining transport became useless. Finnair need not reimburse unrelated hotels or activities under Article 8, though package law, insurance or Montreal damages may create separate routes.
Finnair self-service versus statutory rights
Finnair says a disruption refund may be available when a delay exceeds five hours and the passenger decides not to travel. Direct bookings can often be cancelled in Manage Booking, with the refund form used when self-service is not available. Check that the interface labels the event as airline disruption rather than voluntary cancellation.
Voluntary fare rules can impose restrictions or service fees. Those conditions should not be used to reduce a statutory involuntary reimbursement. Save screenshots before confirming the selection, including the displayed amount and every affected passenger and flight.
Bookings issued by an agency usually require the ticket issuer to return the fare. That does not shift an EU261 fixed-compensation claim away from the operating carrier. The OTA and package guide assigns each request to the correct party.
Care continues while the choice is made
Finnair's duty to provide reasonable meals and refreshments starts according to the distance-based waiting thresholds, not only at hour five. When departure moves to the next day, suitable accommodation and transport between airport and lodging are due on a protected journey.
If the passenger chooses reimbursement and ends the journey, ongoing care does not continue indefinitely. Necessary assistance while arrangements are made and any required return travel remain fact-sensitive. Keep itemised receipts and record when Finnair was asked to help.
Weather or air traffic restrictions can remove fixed compensation but do not erase the five-hour reimbursement choice or care duties on a covered delay. Cause therefore matters less to the immediate decision than it does to EUR 250-600.
Continuing travel and later compensation
Passengers who still need to arrive should request rerouting rather than reimbursement. Ask for the earliest reasonable option under comparable conditions, including a partner route where Finnair's next service would create excessive delay. Do not let an agent describe a rerouting request as a voluntary ticket change.
After travel, calculate the final arrival delay. A long-haul journey over 3,500 km normally supports EUR 600 at four hours or more, with a possible 50% reduction between three and four hours. Shorter distance bands are EUR 250 or EUR 400. The EUR 600 Finnair page explains the long-distance rule.
Evidence and wording for the request
Preserve the original e-ticket, delayed-flight notification, expected departure updates and any offered reroute. Record the moment the projected or actual delay reached five hours. If travel had already begun, include proof of the first departure point and why completed sectors no longer served the plan.
An effective request states:
Finnair-operated flight [route/date] was delayed at departure by at least five hours. Under Articles 6 and 8 of Regulation 261/2004, I chose not to continue and requested reimbursement of [unused parts / the journey rendered pointless] plus [return to first departure, if applicable]. This was an involuntary disruption request, not a fare-rule cancellation.
Use the refund channel for ticket money. Put compensation or care expenses in the feedback and compensation channel, with cross-references to case numbers rather than duplicate submissions.

FAQ
Does Finnair automatically refund a flight after five hours?
No. The passenger normally chooses whether to abandon the journey or continue with rerouting.
Can I take the flight and still request the full ticket refund?
Usually not for travel actually used. Continuing travel instead preserves the arrival-delay and care analysis.
Does the five-hour rule require Finnair to be at fault?
No. The reimbursement choice on a covered delay does not depend on proving an airline-controlled cause.
Can completed travel be reimbursed?
It can when the completed part no longer serves the original travel plan and the Article 8 conditions are met.
Should I use voluntary cancellation in Manage Booking?
Only if the interface clearly processes the Finnair disruption. Save the wording so statutory reimbursement is not treated as a fare-rule cancellation.
