Finnair EUR 600 compensation for long-haul disruption

EUR 600 per passenger is the normal EU261 amount for a qualifying Finnair journey over 3,500 km when arrival is at least four hours late, a short-notice cancellation lacks a close alternative, or boarding is involuntarily denied. Arrival between three and four hours after schedule can permit reduction to EUR 300. Route coverage, operating carrier and cause must still be proved.

Step 1 of 813% completed

What happened to your flight?

Claim up to €600 for a delayed or cancelled flight.

Choose the situation that applies to your flight:

Finnair's status as an EU airline means many of its own flights into Europe can qualify as well as departures from Europe. This is particularly relevant for Asia-Helsinki and North America-Helsinki travel.

EUR 600 eligibility card

QuestionEUR 600 answer
Is the protected journey over 3,500 km?Required for the highest EU261 band
Did Finnair or another EU carrier operate an inbound non-EU flight?Often establishes inbound coverage
Was final arrival at least 4 hours late?Normally needed for full long-haul delay compensation
Was cancellation notice under 14 days?Replacement windows and cause then decide payment
Was denied boarding involuntary?Full distance-band amount can be immediately due
Did Finnair prove an extraordinary event and reasonable measures? If yes, fixed compensation can be zero

The highest band is not a refund of the fare and does not require a EUR 600 ticket. A discounted Economy passenger and a Business passenger receive the same statutory fixed amount for the same qualifying journey.

Direction can bring inbound flights within EU261

All departures from the EU/EEA are covered territorially. Inbound journeys are covered when the operating carrier is an EU airline. Finnair meets that status, so a Finnair-operated flight from Tokyo, Seoul, Bangkok, Singapore, New York or another third-country point to Helsinki can be within EU261.

Codeshare presentation can reverse the answer. A ticket sold under AY but operated by a non-EU partner is not converted into Finnair operation by the marketing number. Read the flight confirmation, check-in page and boarding pass for "operated by." Norra operation also needs to be identified, although Norra is an EU carrier.

If a non-EU partner operates the inbound long-haul but the journey includes a later Finnair sector, do not assume the whole itinerary automatically inherits Finnair's status. Liability and territorial scope require the precise connected-flight facts and applicable case law.

Measure more than 3,500 km correctly

Distance is normally the great-circle distance between first departure and final destination on the protected journey. Do not total the flown legs and do not add diversions around closed airspace.

On Paris-Helsinki-Tokyo issued together, Paris to Tokyo is the relevant endpoint pair for a final-arrival claim. On two independent tickets, Paris-Helsinki and Helsinki-Tokyo are generally separate contracts. A self-created connection cannot automatically turn two routes into one EUR 600 journey.

Use the Finnair calculator guide when the route falls close to a distance threshold or includes several ticketed stops.

Three to four hours: the EUR 300 issue

For qualifying journeys outside the intra-EU category and over 3,500 km, Article 7 permits a 50% reduction where rerouting arrival does not exceed the scheduled time by four hours. Courts apply the reduction framework to long delays as well.

Example: Finnair-operated Helsinki-Singapore arrives 3 hours 35 minutes late after an airline-controlled technical problem. The provisional amount can be EUR 300 per passenger. If doors open 4 hours 2 minutes late, the full EUR 600 becomes the starting point.

Finnair should not reduce the amount simply because the passenger accepted a replacement flight. Actual final arrival must fit the statutory window. Keep evidence of door opening, not only touchdown.

Cancellations and EUR 600

A long-haul cancellation can produce EUR 600 when notice was less than 14 days and Finnair did not offer a replacement within the relevant timing windows. With 7-14 days' notice, an alternative leaving no more than two hours early and arriving less than four hours late can remove fixed compensation. Under seven days, the corresponding limits are one hour early and less than two hours late.

The passenger still chooses refund or rerouting regardless of fixed compensation. Accepting the reroute does not itself waive EUR 600. A cancellation caused by extraordinary circumstances can remove the fixed sum but leaves Article 8 and care duties.

If the rerouting flight independently arrives seriously late, analyse it as another event. C-832/18 concerned Finnair passengers who were compensated for cancellation and then experienced a qualifying delay on the replacement service.

One booking through Helsinki

Final destination is central. Consider Manchester-Helsinki-Osaka on one reservation. The Manchester flight is delayed two hours, the protected connection is missed, and the passenger arrives in Osaka eight hours late. The claim can use Osaka and the entire protected distance even though no single departure delay reached three hours.

If the connection was sold separately, the delayed first ticket usually does not make Finnair responsible for the second ticket's consequences. The airline may provide goodwill or fare flexibility, but EU261 compensation must be grounded in the protected contract.

Keep every reissued ticket because rerouting can change flight numbers and operators. The Helsinki missed-connection guide covers one-ticket proof.

Extraordinary circumstances can remove EUR 600

Routine technical faults, ordinary crew planning and a late incoming aircraft are not made extraordinary by an airline label. Severe weather, air traffic restrictions, airport closure, security threats and some external strikes may qualify when they directly cause the disruption.

Finnair must also show reasonable measures. Ask when the event started and ended, which aircraft rotation was affected, what alternative route or aircraft was considered and why the long delay could not be avoided. Long-haul operations have limited spare capacity, but that fact is evidence to assess rather than a blanket exemption.

Care expenses remain separate. A passenger can recover reasonable hotel, meal and transfer costs on a protected disruption even if extraordinary weather means EUR 600 is not due.

Family and group examples

Fixed compensation is per eligible passenger:

  • one qualifying traveller: EUR 600;
  • two qualifying travellers: EUR 1,200;
  • a family of four: EUR 2,400; and
  • six eligible people on one reservation: EUR 3,600.

Each passenger can have an individual claim even if one person paid. Finnair may accept a representative with authority; preserve each ticket and boarding pass. A shared EUR 220 hotel room is claimed as EUR 220, not EUR 220 for every traveller.

Publicly available award tickets can qualify. Free private or employee travel unavailable to the public can fall outside the regulation. The cabin and Avios price do not change the EUR 600 band.

Submit the long-haul claim precisely

Attach the complete one-ticket itinerary, operator for each segment, scheduled and actual final arrival, cancellation notice if relevant, replacement details and the reason supplied. State the great-circle endpoints and amount per passenger. Put receipts in a separate schedule.

If Finnair offers its enhanced compensation gift card, compare it with cash before accepting. The bonus can be attractive, but usage and conversion conditions matter. The cash or gift card page explains the decision.

Submit through Finnair's feedback and compensation process promptly. Its current page asks for EU261 claims within two months.

Legal and procedural information checked on 15 August 2026. Future EU reform provisions are clearly excluded from this current calculation.

FAQ

Is every Finnair long-haul delay worth EUR 600?

No. Coverage, final delay, cause and distance must all satisfy the legal tests.

Can Tokyo-Helsinki qualify even though it starts outside the EU?

Yes, when Finnair operates the flight, because Finnair is an EU carrier.

Why did Finnair offer EUR 300 instead of EUR 600?

Arrival between three and four hours late on a qualifying journey over 3,500 km can permit a 50% reduction.

Is EUR 600 calculated per booking?

No. It is calculated per eligible passenger, while shared expenses are claimed only at actual cost.

Can EUR 600 be paid as a gift card?

Only by informed passenger choice. Finnair offers a higher-value compensation gift card, but cash remains the comparison point.
