easyJet refund vs voucher: understand the choice before confirming it

A flight voucher is a voluntary commercial alternative, not the default statutory payment. Compare whether you still need to travel, the expiry and account restrictions, and what happens to seats and bags before confirming an option. Cancellation under Article 8 creates the first three statutory choices. easyJet must not decide that a credit is more convenient and impose it. Once you make an informed choice, however, switching later can be difficult. Save the screen and confirmation that record exactly which option you selected.
For a departure delay of at least five hours, a passenger who abandons the trip can choose reimbursement for the unused journey and, where relevant, a return to the first point of departure. When cash reimbursement is the better fit
Choose money when the journey has lost its purpose or you do not want easyJet to arrange replacement travel. The reimbursement should cover the unused part of the ticket. A part already flown can also be relevant when the cancellation makes the original travel plan pointless and a return to the starting point is required.
Check paid seats, hold baggage and other airline extras attached solely to the unused flight. Ask for an itemised calculation if the returned amount is lower than the booking total. Insurance, car hire and third-party products may have separate contracts and should not be assumed to follow the fare automatically.
Payment should return through an accepted money method unless the passenger agrees to a voucher. If a travel agent was the booker or payment intermediary, the refund may pass through that business. Preserve easyJet's payment confirmation and compare it with the amount actually received from the agent.
A refund is not a free replacement ticket. After choosing it, a passenger who still travels usually buys independently and cannot assume easyJet will pay the fare difference. If reaching the destination remains important, compare rerouting first.
What an easyJet flight voucher changes
easyJet's current voucher page says a flight voucher is normally valid for 12 months minus one day from issue unless the airline states otherwise. Booking must be completed before expiry, although travel can occur later. Online vouchers are linked to the relevant easyJet account, generally keep their original currency and cannot be exchanged for cash.
The current terms also limit flight vouchers to new easyJet flight bookings and associated seats or bags in the stated process. They do not turn into easyJet holidays credit and do not ordinarily pay for products such as insurance or car hire. One voucher can be used per online booking, while using several may require customer service and a fee.
These are commercial conditions and can change. Read the email and check the balance page on the day of acceptance. A voucher can be sensible when you know you will book easyJet again and its value or flexibility genuinely improves on money. It is weaker when expiry, currency or account ownership could prevent use.
Do not click a button merely to see what happens next. A recorded acceptance may resolve the refund choice. Capture the offer, its conditions and any additional value before deciding.
Rerouting may be worth more than the fare
A cheap original ticket does not cap the practical value of rerouting. If easyJet cancels a GBP 45 flight on the first day of a family holiday and replacement seats cost GBP 350, taking GBP 45 back may leave the family much worse off. Earliest reasonable rerouting can be the stronger choice.
easyJet's current disruption process describes moves to other easyJet flights, nearby airports, indirect routes and, in eligible cases, another airline on the same route. Compare arrival time rather than fare alone. Include baggage, accessibility, airport transfers and the effect on accommodation.

Refund and fixed compensation can coexist
Reimbursement returns the price of transport not supplied. Fixed compensation addresses qualifying inconvenience from cancellation, long arrival delay or involuntary denied boarding. They have different conditions.
A cancellation announced fewer than 14 days before departure may create fixed compensation when no notice-window exception or extraordinary circumstance applies. Taking a cash refund does not by itself erase that payment. Equally, a cancelled flight caused by genuinely extraordinary weather may produce reimbursement and care without fixed compensation.
Submit the heads separately:
- ticket reimbursement and unused extras;
- fixed EC261 or UK261 compensation per eligible passenger;
- reasonable care expenses while waiting;
- replacement transport cost where easyJet failed to reroute properly.

If the passenger cancels instead
EC261 and UK261 do not create a refund merely because the passenger changes plans. easyJet's current terms describe fares and fees as non-refundable except for stated exceptions. They include a cancellation process within 24 hours of booking, subject to the published fee and timing, discretionary routes for serious illness or bereavement, and a request for unused government tax.
That is different from easyJet cancelling. Travel insurance, package terms or a flexible product may provide another route, but each has its own conditions. Do not label a voluntary cancellation as an airline cancellation on a claim form.
A safe decision sequence
- Confirm whether easyJet cancelled, delayed or merely rescheduled the flight.
- Decide whether the journey still has value.
- If yes, request the earliest reasonable rerouting and compare actual arrival.
- If no, select money reimbursement and save proof of the choice.
- Accept a voucher only after checking value, expiry, account, currency and permitted purchases.
- List compensation and expenses separately from the fare remedy.
For a family booking, the booker may control the refund or voucher, while fixed compensation belongs to each eligible passenger. Keep passenger names and payment ownership clear.
