easyJet alternative flight: how rerouting should work after cancellation

Earliest opportunity is not limited automatically to the next easyJet service. A reasonable flight on another airline or suitable ground transport may be required when it reaches the destination significantly sooner.

easyJet's current disruption page now lets eligible customers choose another airline flying the same route without an extra fare. Use that managed option where practical. Self-booking is a fallback that requires careful evidence.

Do not select a voucher accidentally. A voucher is voluntary and may have expiry or use restrictions. It is not the same as a cash refund or a confirmed replacement itinerary.
Start with easyJet's disruption flow
Open Manage Bookings or the easyJet app and capture the options before selecting. The airline says passengers can move free to another easyJet flight, look at nearby airports in the same country, use indirect easyJet routes, and in some cases book another airline on the same route.
Compare scheduled arrival, not only departure. A same-day indirect route can be better than a direct service two days later. Include terminal changes, immigration, baggage and ground travel.
If no suitable option appears, contact easyJet through the airport desk, chat or official support route. State the specific alternative you found and ask the airline to arrange it. Keep the conversation and time.
Another airline and comparable conditions
Regulation 261 requires rerouting under comparable transport conditions. For easyJet economy travel, an ordinary economy fare on another carrier is the natural comparison. Do not buy business class unless no reasonable standard seat exists and urgency makes the choice defensible.
The UK CAA says an airline may need to book another carrier when it flies significantly sooner. EU guidance likewise treats rerouting as more than a choice confined indefinitely to the cancelling airline's own network.
If the alternative includes checked baggage or required accessibility assistance, compare the complete service. A cheaper fare without baggage can become more expensive and less comparable after add-ons.
Nearby airports
easyJet may offer departure from or arrival at another airport in the same country. Assess both ends. Moving from Gatwick to Luton can require expensive and lengthy ground travel; an arrival at a substitute airport can create a transfer duty.
Agree who pays before accepting where possible. Preserve rail, coach and taxi prices. If easyJet cannot arrange transport, choose a reasonable method and retain itemised receipts.
Do not accept an airport hundreds of kilometres away merely because the country matches. Comparable conditions include practical destination access and the passenger's circumstances.
When self-booking is reasonable
Self-book only after documenting that easyJet did not provide timely reasonable rerouting, unless an emergency leaves no realistic opportunity to ask. Preserve:
- the cancellation notice and options shown;
- the earlier alternative's route, availability and fare;
- attempts to contact easyJet and any refusal;
- why delay would materially worsen without that option;
- the purchased ticket, boarding pass and payment receipt;
- refunds, credits or insurance payments received.
Choose the least costly reasonable transport that fulfils the journey. A premium fare, private car or unrelated destination can be challenged. If prices rise while you wait for easyJet, take screenshots at each stage.
Care while awaiting rerouting
Passengers who keep the rerouting choice are entitled to care according to the wait. Meals and refreshments should be proportionate; an overnight replacement can require accommodation and airport-hotel transfer.
Care continues during extraordinary circumstances under current rules. A storm may explain cancellation but does not force the passenger to fund days of reasonable subsistence while easyJet arranges travel.
Once you switch to reimbursement, ongoing care normally ends because you have abandoned easyJet transport. Make the choice only after comparing the full cost and urgency.
Replacement flight disruption
easyJet's current guidance says that if a flight booked on another airline through its disruption option is itself disrupted, that carrier's terms and applicable passenger-rights rules govern the new event. Preserve both bookings and identify who operates each sector.
The original easyJet cancellation compensation remains a separate question. Accepting another carrier does not automatically waive it; notice, replacement arrival and cause determine the result. A fast replacement may support a half reduction or a cancellation safe harbour.
Fixed compensation and rerouting costs
Do not subtract reasonable replacement-transport reimbursement automatically from fixed compensation. They address different obligations: one supplies the promised journey, the other compensates qualifying inconvenience. Double recovery of the same replacement ticket is not allowed, but coexistence is normal when conditions are met.
EC261 amounts are EUR 250-600 and UK261 amounts GBP 220-520. Calculate from the original route and legal regime. The substitute fare does not set the statutory amount.

Claim package
For rerouting reimbursement, create a timeline from cancellation to purchase. Attach the original booking, available easyJet options, contact attempts, alternative comparison, invoice and boarding proof. Explain why the choice was reasonable and earliest.
Submit fixed compensation through the easyJet EC261 portal. Use the expense or contact form designated for additional transport costs. Cross-reference case numbers while keeping requested amounts distinct.
If easyJet says only its own later flight was available, ask it to apply Article 8 and the CAA or Commission rerouting guidance. If it says you chose refund, provide the Manage Bookings screenshots showing no informed reimbursement selection.
