easyJet cancelled flight: refund, replacement travel and compensation
Reviewed on 10 August 2026. When easyJet cancels a covered flight, you normally choose between reimbursement and rerouting. If notice arrived less than 14 days before departure, you may also receive fixed compensation unless the replacement timing removes the entitlement or easyJet proves extraordinary circumstances and reasonable measures. These are separate rights: accepting replacement travel does not automatically waive compensation, and an extraordinary cause does not normally erase refund, rerouting or care.

Choose the situation that applies to your flight:
Your three immediate options
| Choice after cancellation | What it means |
|---|---|
| Refund | Recover the unused ticket and stop relying on easyJet for that transport |
| Rerouting at the earliest opportunity | Continue travelling as soon as reasonably possible under comparable conditions |
| Rerouting at a later convenient date | Move the journey to a suitable date, subject to seat availability under the governing rule |
easyJet's disruption page currently allows passengers to switch to another easyJet flight through Manage Bookings and, in appropriate cases, to select an alternative airline on the same route without an extra fare. It also describes nearby-airport and indirect easyJet options. Compare the arrival time, airport, baggage position and ground transport before confirming a selection; the fastest lawful rerouting is not always the first option shown by the app.
If you choose a cash refund, easyJet no longer has to carry you on the cancelled journey or fund care while you wait for a trip you have abandoned. That prospective effect should not be confused with fixed compensation for the cancellation itself.
The 14-day notice test
Compensation depends on when cancellation notice reached the passenger, not merely when easyJet says it sent a message. Preserve the email headers, app notification and booking-agent correspondence. If an online travel agent held the notice for several days, responsibility for proving timely notification under EC261 can still be important.
The current framework works broadly as follows:
- at least 14 days' notice usually means no fixed cancellation payment;
- seven to 14 days' notice can avoid payment when the offered replacement leaves no more than two hours early and arrives less than four hours late;
- less than seven days' notice can avoid payment when the replacement leaves no more than one hour early and arrives less than two hours late;
- outside those safe timing windows, continue to distance, coverage and cause.
The exact facts matter. A replacement that departs much earlier can disrupt a journey even if it arrives on time. A new flight that arrives substantially late may preserve a claim despite being accepted and used.
Compensation amounts
For EC261, the standard bands are EUR 250 up to 1,500 km, EUR 400 for intra-EU routes above 1,500 km and other routes from 1,500 to 3,500 km, and EUR 600 for other covered routes above 3,500 km. UK261 ordinarily provides GBP 220, GBP 350 and GBP 520 across corresponding distance bands.
Where rerouting keeps the final arrival within two, three or four hours of the original schedule, depending on the distance category, the airline may reduce compensation by half. The reduction is not a general discount for providing any replacement. Calculate the route and compare the replacement's actual arrival with the original timetable.
The easyJet compensation calculator helps organise those variables. For a UK departure, use pounds and UK261; for an EU departure, start with EC261 even when easyJet UK operated the aircraft.
When extraordinary circumstances matter
easyJet does not owe fixed cancellation compensation if it demonstrates both a qualifying extraordinary event and that the cancellation could not have been avoided despite reasonable measures. Airport closure, a direct air-traffic-control restriction, severe weather incompatible with safe operation or a genuine security event may qualify. Evidence should connect that event to the cancelled flight.
Routine aircraft faults and ordinary operational planning are generally not extraordinary. A statement that the inbound aircraft was delayed elsewhere does not reveal the initiating cause or explain the mitigation available across the rotation. Ask easyJet for the originating event, timing, affected aircraft and measures considered.
Even a valid extraordinary-circumstances defence normally leaves Article 8 refund or rerouting and Article 9 care intact under the current regime. This distinction is especially important after widespread weather disruption, when the fixed claim may be weak but replacement travel and hotel costs remain central.
Rerouting on another airline
The governing rule calls for rerouting at the earliest opportunity under comparable transport conditions. easyJet now says it may let customers book an alternative carrier on the same route through its disruption flow. When a much earlier reasonable option exists outside the choices shown, ask easyJet in writing or through a recorded channel to provide it.
Self-booking can be necessary, but it creates an evidence dispute. First preserve screenshots of the options offered, the earlier alternative, prices and attempts to contact easyJet. Choose a reasonable fare and comparable class rather than an upgrade. Keep proof that the new transport served the cancelled journey. The easyJet alternative-flight guide explains how to reduce reimbursement risk.
Nearby airports need a complete comparison. A flight to a different airport may require easyJet to fund transfer to the booked airport or another close destination agreed with you. Confirm the transfer arrangement before accepting where possible, and retain train, coach or taxi receipts if the airline cannot provide it.
Care while waiting
If you remain on rerouting, easyJet should provide reasonable meals and refreshments, communication, and hotel accommodation with airport transfer when a necessary stay arises. The duty is not a fixed daily allowance and should reflect the wait. It generally continues during extraordinary disruption.
easyJet's current expense guidance says it may reimburse standard or shared transport, three-star or equivalent accommodation where available, and reasonable food and non-alcoholic drink when direct arrangements were unavailable. Itemised receipts are essential. Record why you had to pay; a card slip without the items or an unexplained premium hotel weakens the request.
Evidence and claim sequence
Save the original itinerary, booking reference, passenger list, operating-airline notation and scheduled times. Keep the cancellation message in its original form so its delivery time remains visible. Capture every rerouting or refund option offered in Manage Bookings before selecting one.
At the airport, request written confirmation of cancellation and cause. Keep boarding passes, baggage receipts and photographs of information displays. For a replacement flight, preserve its booking and actual arrival time. Organise fixed compensation separately from expenses and replacement-transport reimbursement.
Submit compensation through easyJet's official EC261 portal, naming the operating carrier and notice date. Use the expense form for meals, accommodation and transfer. If a travel agent collected payment, it may assist with a commercial refund, but the operating airline remains the usual respondent for fixed compensation.
The easyJet rejected-claim guide covers a refusal. Eligible UK-connected complaints can currently reach AviationADR after easyJet's internal process, subject to the scheme rules and the 12-month window stated in easyJet's terms.
The EU amendment adopted in July 2026 is not yet applicable on this page's review date. In particular, do not treat its future automatic-refund process, nine-month compensation-request limit or 30-day response rule as current EC261 procedure.
FAQ
Does easyJet owe compensation whenever it cancels a flight?
No. Notice timing, replacement-flight timing, legal coverage and the cause all matter. Refund or rerouting rights usually arise even when the fixed compensation test fails.
Can I take the replacement flight and still claim compensation?
Yes, when the separate compensation conditions are satisfied. Using rerouting does not by itself settle the fixed claim, although the new arrival time may allow a 50% reduction or remove entitlement within the notice safe harbours.
Must I accept an easyJet voucher?
No statutory cancellation refund should be forced into a voucher. A voucher is a voluntary commercial choice. Check validity, transferability and restrictions before giving up the cash-refund route.
Will easyJet pay for a hotel after a weather cancellation?
Hotel care can remain due when rerouting requires an overnight wait, even though severe weather may exclude fixed compensation. Ask easyJet to arrange accommodation first and keep reasonable itemised receipts if it cannot.
What if easyJet sends me to a different airport?
The airline should address onward transfer to the booked airport or another nearby destination agreed with you. Preserve the offer and claim reasonable ground-transport costs when easyJet does not arrange that transfer.
