easyJet compensation calculator: estimate the correct EUR or GBP amount
Reviewed on 10 August 2026. To estimate easyJet compensation, enter the airport pair, governing law, disruption type, relevant timing and operating cause. Distance selects a maximum band, but it does not prove entitlement. UK261 pays in pounds and EC261 in euros; cancellation notice, replacement arrival and long-distance reductions can change the result.

Five inputs the calculator needs
| Input | Correct value |
|---|---|
| Route | Airport code to airport code, not city centre to city centre |
| Regime | UK261, EC261 or the Swiss adoption based on route and operator |
| Event | Delay, cancellation or involuntary denied boarding |
| Timing | Door-opening arrival, notice date and any replacement times |
| Cause | Airline-controlled event or proven extraordinary circumstances |
The booking price, checked-bag fee and holiday cost do not set the fixed award. Those figures may matter for refund or package remedies, but Regulation 261 uses standard amounts.
EC261 distance table
| Covered journey | Standard amount |
|---|---|
| Up to 1,500 km | EUR 250 |
| Intra-EU above 1,500 km | EUR 400 |
| Other journey from 1,500 to 3,500 km | EUR 400 |
| Other journey above 3,500 km | EUR 600 |
“Intra-EU” is a legal category, not a distance shortcut. A long route between an EU mainland airport and an EU outer region can stay in the EUR 400 band. EUR 600 requires a covered journey above 3,500 km that is outside the intra-EU category.
For distance, use the great-circle path. A weather detour or holding pattern does not increase the compensation band. Where a legally protected single booking has several segments, final destination principles may matter, but easyJet normally sells point-to-point tickets rather than through connections.
UK261 distance table
| Covered journey | Standard amount |
|---|---|
| Under 1,500 km | GBP 220 |
| 1,500 to 3,500 km | GBP 350 |
| Above 3,500 km | GBP 520 |
For a UK261 delay above 3,500 km, arrival between three and four hours late normally produces GBP 260. More than four hours can produce GBP 520. Cancellation rerouting also has half-payment rules based on the substitute arrival.
A hypothetical easyJet flight leaving London Luton for Amsterdam sits in the shortest distance category, so a qualifying delay would point to GBP 220. A UK departure to a destination above 3,500 km, such as easyJet's announced Gatwick-Sal service, points to the long UK261 band rather than EUR 600. Always check that the route operated on the travel date.
Select the law before the currency
An easyJet flight leaving the UK normally starts under UK261. A flight leaving France, Spain, Italy or another EU state starts under EC261 even when easyJet UK is the operator. Switzerland applies Regulation 261 through its aviation agreement, with FOCA handling relevant enforcement.
For an inbound flight, identify the operating company. easyJet's terms map EZY to easyJet UK Limited, EJU to easyJet Europe Airline GmbH and EZS to easyJet Switzerland S.A. The easyJet legal-regime guide explains UK-EU overlap and why two regimes do not create two awards for one incident.
Do not convert a statutory GBP band into euros simply because easyJet asks for a euro bank account. Payment mechanics do not change the underlying measure.
Apply the disruption-specific test
For delay, the original flight must arrive at least three hours late. Use door opening, not touchdown. For cancellation, record when notice reached the passenger and compare offered rerouting with the original schedule. For denied boarding, establish confirmed travel, timely presentation, valid documents and involuntary refusal.
A calculator that asks only “How late?” cannot determine a cancellation case. Notice of at least 14 days normally removes fixed payment; shorter notice has safe harbours based on how early the replacement leaves and how late it arrives.
Five hours of departure delay creates a choice to abandon the journey and obtain a refund. It is not a new fixed-compensation amount. Keep the easyJet five-hour refund rule separate from the three-hour arrival calculation.
Apply reductions carefully
Article 7 permits a 50% reduction where rerouting keeps arrival within the specified distance-related windows. Long-delay case law also allows the long-distance payment to be halved when arrival is between three and four hours late. Do not halve EUR 250 or GBP 220 simply because easyJet offered another flight.
For a family, calculate per passenger first and multiply only after checking individual eligibility. If four ticketed passengers qualify for EUR 400 each, the fixed total is EUR 1,600. Meal receipts or ticket refunds are added under their own rules and should not be included in that multiplication.
Cause can reduce the result to zero
The calculated amount is payable only if easyJet cannot establish the extraordinary-circumstances defence. Severe weather, airport closure, a specific ATC instruction or security event may exclude it. Routine technical defects and ordinary operational shortcomings usually do not.
Even a zero fixed-payment result does not mean “no rights.” Cancellation still creates refund or rerouting, and care can remain due during an extraordinary disruption. Baggage claims use the Montreal Convention and actual proved loss rather than the Regulation 261 calculator.
Worked examples
Short UK departure. A covered journey below 1,500 km opens its door three hours 25 minutes late because of an ordinary aircraft defect. The provisional result is GBP 220 per eligible passenger.
Long intra-EU journey. A covered EU departure to another EU airport is above 1,500 km and arrives four hours late for a carrier-controlled reason. The category remains EUR 400, not EUR 600.
Short-notice cancellation. easyJet informs the passenger five days before travel and offers a replacement leaving 90 minutes early and arriving two hours 20 minutes late. The less-than-seven-day safe harbour is not met; calculate the full band, then test any lawful 50% reduction and the cause.
External closure. An airport closes by authority order and easyJet shows that the closure directly cancelled the flight despite reasonable measures. Fixed compensation may be zero, while rerouting, care and reasonable expenses remain in the calculation.
Turn the estimate into a claim
Write the result as a transparent formula:
covered regime + verified distance band + qualifying event - applicable reduction = amount per passenger
Attach the airport pair, operating airline, arrival or notice evidence and passenger list. Submit through the official portal and save the acknowledgement. If easyJet pays half, ask which timing rule supports the reduction. If it pays one passenger only, compare the form data with the booking.
This calculator uses current law on 10 August 2026. The adopted EU nine-month request and 30-day airline-response periods remain future procedure until the amending regulation reaches its application date.
FAQ
Is easyJet compensation based on my ticket price?
No. Fixed compensation uses statutory distance and disruption rules. Ticket price matters for reimbursement of unused transport, not the EUR or GBP band.
Why does the calculator show pounds for my easyJet flight?
The journey may fall under UK261, particularly when it departs the UK. The legal regime determines the statutory currency, not the currency used to buy the ticket.
Can an easyJet flight inside the EU pay EUR 600?
An intra-EU journey remains in the EUR 400 category once it exceeds 1,500 km. EUR 600 is for other covered journeys above 3,500 km, subject to all remaining tests.
Should I include hotel costs in the calculator result?
No. Add reasonable care expenses as a separate reimbursement request with receipts. They are not multiplied by the fixed per-passenger band.
Does a result guarantee easyJet will pay?
No. It is an estimate. Coverage, passenger status, accurate timing and the operating cause must still be proved, and a valid extraordinary event can remove the fixed amount.
