easyJet delay over five hours: refund, later travel or compensation
Reviewed on 10 August 2026. Once an easyJet departure delay reaches five hours, a passenger covered by EC261 or UK261 may abandon the journey and request reimbursement of the ticket for the unused travel. This is a choice, not an automatic cancellation. If you still need to reach the destination, keep the booking and request care while waiting. The fixed compensation question remains separate and depends mainly on arrival delay and cause.

Choose the situation that applies to your flight:
Decide before pressing cancel
| Your priority | Safer starting choice |
|---|---|
| The trip has lost its purpose | Ask for the statutory five-hour reimbursement |
| You still need to travel today | Remain booked and seek the earliest available transport or updated operation |
| You prefer a future easyJet journey | Compare a voluntary change or voucher with the statutory cash right |
| You have already flown an earlier segment on one protected journey | Check whether a return to the first departure point is required |
easyJet's disruption page says that after a delay longer than five hours you can move the flight to a later date, subject to seats, or cancel the delayed flight and request a full refund. Record the displayed options before choosing one.
Five hours is measured at departure
The five-hour refund trigger concerns delay in departure. It is different from the three-hour arrival threshold for fixed compensation. A passenger need not wait to see the eventual door-opening time before deciding that a journey delayed five hours no longer serves its purpose.
Example: departure was scheduled for 08:00 and easyJet still expects the flight to leave after 13:00. The passenger can choose not to travel and seek reimbursement. If the passenger instead flies and arrives three hours late for an airline-controlled cause, a fixed award may arise. The same five hours therefore creates a refund choice, not a guaranteed compensation amount.
Keep the original schedule and easyJet status showing when expected departure crossed the threshold. If the app offers cancellation slightly before five hours, determine whether that is a commercial option with different terms or the statutory reimbursement right.
What reimbursement should cover
The regulation refers to reimbursement of the full cost of the ticket at the price purchased for the part or parts not made, and for parts already made if the flight no longer serves the original travel plan. Where relevant, it also provides a return flight to the first departure point at the earliest opportunity.
easyJet normally sells point-to-point flights without through tickets. A return booking can contain separate sectors, so identify whether the unused return remains useful and what the app proposes to refund. Do not assume that abandoning the outbound automatically cancels another flight on the booking; easyJet's terms say missing or cancelling one flight does not necessarily affect the others.
Ancillary services attached only to the unused flight should be itemised. Ask how seats and baggage fees are handled rather than accepting an unexplained total. Taxes on an unused voluntary cancellation have their own easyJet process and should not be confused with a delay reimbursement.
Consequences of choosing the refund
Once you clearly abandon the journey and take reimbursement, easyJet generally no longer has to transport you or provide care for an ongoing wait. Hotel and meal rights do not continue while you arrange an unrelated trip after ending the carrier's performance.
Expenses reasonably incurred before the choice may still require assessment. Preserve the timeline: when care should have been provided, when you paid, when delay crossed five hours and when you requested the refund.
A statutory refund does not automatically waive fixed compensation for an airline-responsible disruption. However, a delay passenger who does not fly has no actual arrival on that flight, so the legal basis for a lump sum needs careful treatment. Cancellation or denied-boarding facts may provide a different route. Do not claim a fictional arrival time.
If you still need to travel
Do not select reimbursement merely because it is the most prominent button. Stay in contact with easyJet and ask whether the original service will operate, whether a same-day easyJet option exists and what care is being arranged. The statutory five-hour delay provision gives refund, while formal rerouting rights are clearest after cancellation.
easyJet currently says a passenger can change a flight delayed over five hours to a later date, subject to availability. Confirm whether that change preserves baggage and paid seating, and save the revised confirmation.
If easyJet later cancels, the cancellation framework gives a direct choice of refund or rerouting at the earliest opportunity. That can include another airline where appropriate. Read easyJet cancellation and replacement travel if status changes.
Care before and after five hours
Care begins earlier than five hours according to route distance. easyJet should provide food and refreshment proportionate to the wait, communication and accommodation with transport if overnight delay becomes necessary. These rights do not require airline fault.
Ask the ground team or app for direct arrangements. If none are available, make modest purchases and keep itemised receipts. easyJet's published policy limits its direct reimbursement approach to reasonable food, non-alcoholic drink, three-star or equivalent accommodation and standard or shared transport where appropriate.
When you choose refund, note the exact time. Claim care incurred while you were still waiting for easyJet's transport; do not include later leisure spending or an unnecessary hotel after the journey was abandoned.
Fixed compensation analysis
If you eventually travel, calculate door-opening arrival. At least three hours can produce GBP 220-520 under UK261 or EUR 250-600 under EC261, subject to distance and cause. A flight above 3,500 km arriving between three and four hours late can attract a half amount.
If severe weather or ATC caused the delay, fixed compensation may fail even though the five-hour refund choice and earlier care remained available. Routine technical defects are ordinarily not extraordinary. Ask easyJet for the specific event and reasonable measures.
Use the easyJet delayed-flight guide if you travelled, and the official compensation form only after separating fixed payment from reimbursement.
Evidence and submission
Save the booking, original schedule, operating airline, status updates and screenshots of refund or change options. Record the five-hour point and your selection. Keep the refund confirmation and amount breakdown.
Request reimbursement through the disruption flow or official contact route designated by easyJet. If the airline issues a voucher without informed choice, respond promptly that you selected the statutory cash reimbursement and preserve the screen showing that option.
For expenses, use easyJet's separate form with itemised proof. For fixed compensation, use its EC261 portal and state whether the flight eventually operated and how your journey ended.
The adopted EU reform will change some reimbursement mechanics once applicable, but it is not current law on 10 August 2026. The five-hour rule described here remains the present basis, and the future nine-month claim period should not be quoted as today's deadline.
FAQ
Must I wait exactly five hours before requesting the statutory refund?
The regulatory right arises when departure delay reaches at least five hours. A commercial option offered earlier may carry different conditions, so save the wording before accepting it.
Can I claim compensation as well as a five-hour refund?
Possibly, but the fixed-payment basis must be established separately. If you do not fly, do not invent an arrival delay; examine cancellation, denied boarding and the legal treatment of the disruption.
Does taking a refund end easyJet's duty to provide a hotel?
It generally ends ongoing transport and care after you abandon the journey. Reasonable care incurred before that decision may still be recoverable with a clear timeline and receipts.
Will cancelling the outbound cancel my easyJet return flight?
Not necessarily. easyJet's terms say not taking one flight does not automatically affect other flights on the booking. Check the selection screen and preserve confirmation of what was refunded.
Can I move the delayed flight to another date instead?
easyJet currently says a flight delayed beyond five hours can be changed to a later date subject to available seats. Confirm ancillary services and obtain the revised itinerary.
