How to claim easyJet compensation: a practical evidence-first process

Reviewed on 10 August 2026. A strong easyJet claim is short, verifiable and directed to the operating airline. Establish the law, disruption, time, distance and cause before opening the form. Then request the fixed amount separately from meals, hotel, transport or replacement-ticket expenses. This prevents a partial expense payment from being mistaken for resolution of the compensation claim.

What happened to your flight?

Claim up to €600 for a delayed or cancelled flight.

Choose the situation that applies to your flight:

The claim sequence

StageActionOutput to keep
1Identify EZY, EJU or EZS and the “operated by” lineCopy of booking or Flight Tracker
2Decide whether UK261, EC261 or Swiss EC261 appliesOne-sentence coverage explanation
3Classify delay, cancellation or denied boardingCorrect eligibility test
4Calculate arrival time, notice period and distanceRequested GBP or EUR amount
5Separate fixed compensation from expensesTwo organised evidence bundles

7Test the response and escalate only if necessaryFocused reply or ADR file

This approach avoids sending a long travel diary that leaves easyJet to guess what you want. The purpose is not to use legal language everywhere; it is to make each required fact easy to confirm.

Step 1: identify the operating easyJet airline

easyJet's terms currently say EZY flights are normally operated by easyJet UK Limited, EJU by easyJet Europe Airline GmbH and EZS by easyJet Switzerland S.A. The booking contract may be made through easyJet Airline Company Limited, but compensation obligations under Regulation 261 focus on the operating air carrier.

Save the booking confirmation and the current operator notice. Wet leasing or an operational substitution can make the aircraft owner different from the legal operator, so do not rely on livery or crew uniform. If the operator changed, keep both versions of the notice.

Step 2: select the governing passenger-rights regime

For a flight leaving an EU airport, EC261 normally applies on departure. For a UK departure, begin with UK261. Switzerland has adopted Regulation 261, so a Swiss departure receives comparable protection and FOCA can be the enforcement authority.

Inbound flights require closer attention to operator nationality. A flight from outside the EU arriving in the EU generally needs an EU or qualifying Community carrier for EC261. UK261 covers UK departures and specified inbound flights operated by UK or EU carriers. The easyJet UK261 versus EC261 guide provides a route matrix and explains overlap without promising double recovery.

Step 3: apply the correct disruption test

For delay, calculate lateness when a door opened at the destination. Touchdown alone is not enough. For cancellation, establish when notice reached you and compare any replacement flight with the original departure and arrival times. For involuntary denied boarding, prove timely presentation, valid documents and the absence of voluntary surrender.

Do not combine these into a generic complaint. A cancellation later rebooked under the same flight number may still require cancellation analysis; a flight operated under its original plan but arriving late uses delay rules. A major advance of departure can be treated as cancellation under Court of Justice case law.

Step 4: calculate the requested amount

Use great-circle airport distance. EC261 normally provides EUR 250 up to 1,500 km, EUR 400 for intra-EU journeys above 1,500 km and other journeys from 1,500 to 3,500 km, and EUR 600 for other covered journeys above 3,500 km. UK261 uses GBP 220, GBP 350 and GBP 520. Long-distance reductions can apply when the arrival delay falls inside the specified window.

State the calculation in one line, such as: “The covered route is below 1,500 km and arrival was three hours 18 minutes late, so I request GBP 220 under UK261.” Replace the values with verified facts. The easyJet compensation calculator can structure this step.

Step 5: investigate the cause

Your first submission need not prove easyJet's internal operations. Describe what staff and official messages said and ask the airline to identify any extraordinary event precisely. easyJet bears the burden of proving that defence and reasonable measures.

Routine technical defects and ordinary resource planning generally remain within airline activity. Severe weather, a specific ATC restriction, airport closure or security event may qualify when directly causal. A prior disruption to the aircraft is not enough without identifying the initiating event and explaining why reasonable alternatives were unavailable.

Save airport notices, Flight Tracker messages, photographs and contemporaneous announcements. Do not assert that other flights operated unless you have reliable comparable data for the same time, route constraints and aircraft needs.

Step 6: prepare two evidence bundles

The fixed-compensation bundle should contain:

  • booking reference, passenger names and original itinerary;
  • boarding passes or other proof of confirmed travel;
  • operating-airline statement and flight prefix;
  • scheduled and actual door-opening arrival, or cancellation notice timestamp;
  • denied-boarding record where relevant;
  • concise description of the stated cause;
  • distance calculation and requested amount.

The expenses bundle should contain itemised receipts, currency and payment proof, together with an explanation of why the purchase was necessary and why easyJet did not provide care. Group receipts should identify which passengers were covered. Keep accommodation, food, ground transfer and replacement travel in separate subtotals.

easyJet says its direct expense policy covers reasonable food and non-alcoholic drinks, three-star or equivalent accommodation where available, and standard or shared transport when it could not arrange them. Statutory entitlement must still be assessed, but matching necessity and proportionality reduces avoidable disputes.

Step 7: use the correct form

Submit fixed compensation through the official easyJet EC261 portal. Have the booking reference and flight details ready; easyJet warns that missing or inaccurate mandatory information may stop processing. The field-by-field form guide explains how to describe the original flight and passengers.

Use the separate expense form for self-funded care. Download or print the completed information before submitting if the portal permits, then save the acknowledgement and case reference. A screenshot of a final success screen is useful when no email arrives.

If an online agent made the booking, use the easyJet reference rather than only the agent's order number. Ask the agent for the airline PNR and original operator notice. Fixed compensation remains directed primarily at the operating carrier even when refund money must pass through an intermediary.

Step 8: assess the answer

A reasoned acceptance should identify the amount and payment method. Check that it covers every eligible passenger and that a half payment has a legal timing basis. A refund or expense reimbursement is not necessarily compensation.

For refusal, compare the stated cause with your flight and request supporting detail. The easyJet rejected-claim guide contains a response framework for weather, ATC, technical faults and notice disputes. Do not send repeated identical forms; keep one traceable file and refer to its case number.

easyJet's terms currently provide AviationADR for eligible unresolved complaints, generally within 12 months after the final response. UK scheme jurisdiction and prerequisites must be checked. EU or Swiss cases may instead involve the competent enforcement authority, consumer ADR or court connected with the route.

A concise claim model

Your message can follow this structure:

  1. Identify the original flight, date, route, passengers and operating airline.
  2. State the disruption and controlling time or notice facts.
  3. Identify EC261, UK261 or the Swiss framework.
  4. Give the distance band and per-passenger sum.
  5. Ask for bank payment and a reasoned response.
  6. List attached evidence and preserve expenses as a separate request.

Avoid an artificial deadline unsupported by the applicable jurisdiction. The adopted EU reform will eventually introduce nine months for submitting a compensation request and 30 days for the airline response, but those periods are not yet applicable on 10 August 2026.

FAQ

Should I claim from easyJet or the booking agent?

Claim fixed Regulation 261 compensation from the operating airline. An agent may be involved in returning ticket funds, but it is not normally the party that operated the disrupted flight.

Can one passenger submit for everyone on the booking?

The portal may allow booking-level details, but each passenger owns an individual right. Include every name accurately and retain authority where an adult submits on behalf of another adult.

Do I combine hotel receipts with the compensation request?

Keep them conceptually and procedurally separate. easyJet provides a dedicated expense route, while the EC261 portal addresses the fixed payment. Referencing both case numbers can help without merging the remedies.

What if I no longer have my boarding pass?

Use the booking confirmation, check-in record, app history, baggage tag and airline communications to prove the reservation and travel. Ask easyJet to check its own records rather than abandoning the claim automatically.

How quickly must easyJet answer today?

No single current EC261 response period governs every case. The adopted EU reform's 30-day rule is future law on this review date; scheme and national complaint periods may already apply separately.
