easyJet Bristol disruption: compensation, replacement travel and care
Reviewed on 10 August 2026. easyJet passengers leaving Bristol Airport receive UK261 protection. A delay of at least three hours on arrival, a qualifying short-notice cancellation or involuntary denied boarding can create fixed compensation. During the disruption, compare replacement travel from the South West carefully and retain proof of accommodation, meals and surface transport.

Choose the situation that applies to your flight:
What each right solves
| Right | Purpose | Key evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Fixed compensation | Standard payment for qualifying disruption | Distance, final arrival, notice and cause |
| Refund | Returns eligible ticket price when travel is abandoned | Passenger's recorded selection |
| Rerouting | Gets the passenger to the destination | Offers, live alternatives and arrival comparison |
| Care | Supports the passenger while waiting | Help request and itemised receipts |
| Expense reimbursement | Repays reasonable unmet duties | Necessity, proportionality and payment proof |
Keep these requests separate. A meal voucher is not fixed compensation, and ticket reimbursement does not automatically settle an expense claim.
Delay compensation from Bristol
The airport of departure controls the starting regime, so Bristol services use UK261 even when they land in the EU. Current fixed bands are GBP 220, GBP 350 and GBP 520 according to great-circle distance. On a route over 3,500 km, a three-to-four-hour arrival delay can reduce the sum to GBP 260.
The clock ends when a door opens and passengers may disembark at the final destination. Save easyJet and Bristol Airport status records, then note the destination door time. A connection on a separate booking usually does not extend easyJet's final destination; its point-to-point terms matter.
For a claim involving several passengers, calculate each eligible person separately. A child travelling on a fare available to the public can qualify; the booking total is not one shared payment.
Use the easyJet compensation amount guide for route measurement and reductions.
Rerouting from the South West
After cancellation, earliest reasonable rerouting can involve another easyJet flight, a different airline, an indirect route or another departure airport. The practical geography around Bristol matters. A Heathrow, Gatwick, Birmingham or Cardiff option may be useful only if surface transport and check-in timing work.
Ask easyJet to confirm the full plan. Compare:
- when ground travel can realistically leave Bristol;
- baggage collection and new check-in deadline;
- accessibility and child-seat requirements;
- scheduled arrival at the final destination;
- who supplies or reimburses surface transport;
- whether accommodation is needed before departure.
Do not select cash reimbursement merely because it is the easiest button when reaching the destination is still essential. Conversely, do not accept a replacement two days later without asking whether a same-day reasonable alternative exists.
If easyJet does not respond and a self-booking becomes necessary, capture the options and prices before purchase. The easyJet alternative-flight guide explains how to present the proportionality argument.
Consider a cancelled Bristol to Rome journey for parents travelling with a child. An evening departure from Heathrow may arrive the same day, but it is not a genuine solution if the family cannot collect checked baggage and reach the Heathrow desk before closure. A Birmingham itinerary the next morning may require one hotel night yet still be the earliest workable option. Put those timings in writing so the claim is judged on a real journey rather than a search result.
Overnight care near Bristol
A cancellation or qualifying delay can require meals, a hotel and transport between airport and accommodation. The duty can continue when the reason is weather or air-traffic control, even though fixed compensation may be excluded.
Ask easyJet to arrange care first. If no room is offered, search a reasonable area and save availability. An airport-area property may sell out during widespread disruption, so a more distant room can be defensible when the evidence shows it was the lowest safe practical option.
Retain a named invoice and transport receipt. Standard or shared transport is easier to recover than a premium vehicle, unless family size, disability, late-night safety or lack of alternatives explains the choice.
Food should match waiting time and passenger needs. Itemised receipts are essential; exclude alcohol and unrelated shopping. If a voucher covers part of the bill, claim only the balance.
Cancellation notice and replacement windows
Fixed compensation usually falls away when easyJet gave at least 14 days' notice. With seven to 13 days, or fewer than seven days, compare the replacement's departure and arrival against the specific statutory windows. Preserve the timestamp and channel of notice.
An airline schedule email can constitute notice only when it reaches the passenger or authorised agent appropriately. A booking agent's failure to pass it on can complicate responsibility, so retain the account message history.
Cause remains a separate test. Security closure, severe weather or binding air-traffic restrictions may be extraordinary. A routine aircraft fault, lack of crew or network planning issue generally needs more than an “operational” label.
Where an external restriction ends before the eventual departure, divide the chronology. easyJet should explain whether later waiting came from the same restriction or from aircraft rotation, crew hours or another operational consequence. The compensation question turns on the delay that could not have been avoided with reasonable measures, while meals and accommodation remain a separate duty throughout the qualifying wait.
Diversion and another destination airport
If an aircraft intended for Bristol lands elsewhere, easyJet may have to transport passengers to Bristol or another agreed nearby point. Record touchdown, door opening, coach departure and final arrival.
Do not calculate delay only to the substitute runway. Surface transfer can push the final delay above three hours. Keep baggage and transport information, especially if passengers are released to arrange their own journey.
The easyJet diversion guide covers the final-arrival rule and receipts.
Presenting the claim
Submit the official easyJet form with booking, passenger list, route, distance band and actual arrival. Quote the airline's exact reason and ask for supporting facts if it relies on extraordinary circumstances.
Expenses need their own chronological schedule. For each item, show date, purpose, passenger count, amount, receipt and any voucher or refund already received.
After easyJet's final answer, check AviationADR eligibility and referral timing. Do not allow a complaint process to obscure a court deadline.
FAQ
Are easyJet flights from Bristol covered by UK261?
Yes. Every qualifying departure from Bristol begins under UK261, regardless of the passenger's nationality or the destination country.
Can easyJet reroute me from another airport?
It can offer a reasonable alternative, but the transfer, baggage, check-in and final arrival must be workable. Ask who pays the surface journey.
Does fog at Bristol cancel the hotel right?
No. Extraordinary weather can remove fixed compensation, but reasonable care and cancellation rerouting or refund duties remain.
Is a meal voucher part of the GBP 220 compensation?
No. Care and fixed compensation are separate rights. A voucher for food should not be deducted from a valid fixed sum.
What if my flight lands at Birmingham instead?
Record the full transfer to Bristol or another agreed point. Final lateness can include the surface journey, and reasonable transport should be addressed by easyJet.
