easyJet diverted flight: your rights after landing at another airport

Reviewed on 10 August 2026. When easyJet lands at a different airport, it should arrange onward transport to the airport on your booking or another nearby destination agreed with you. For compensation timing, arrival is generally assessed when you reach that booked or agreed place, not when the aircraft touches down at the diversion airport. Fixed payment still depends on coverage, total delay and cause.

Choose the situation that applies to your flight:

A diversion is not automatically a cancellation. The Court of Justice has held that landing at a different airport serving the same town, city or region can remain performance of the flight, with a duty to offer transfer. A diversion far from the destination or followed by abandonment of the journey can require a more detailed classification.

Do not leave the airport without checking easyJet's plan unless waiting becomes unreasonable or unsafe. The airline may have arranged coaches that make a private taxi unnecessary and non-reimbursable.

Which arrival time counts?

Suppose a flight scheduled to reach Gatwick at 18:00 lands at Luton at 19:30. easyJet delivers passengers to Gatwick by coach at 22:00. The relevant delay can be approximately four hours, even though touchdown at Luton was only 90 minutes late.

If you agree to be dropped at central London rather than Gatwick, record that agreement and actual arrival. A passenger who independently goes home without informing easyJet may face a dispute about where and when the transfer obligation ended.

C-826/19 confirms that an airline should on its own initiative offer transfer between the substitute airport and the booked airport or another agreed nearby destination. Failure to offer that transport does not by itself create the standard fixed award, but reasonable transfer costs and the resulting arrival delay remain important.

Same region or materially different destination

Airports serving one city can still be many miles apart. Gatwick, Luton, Stansted and Southend should not be treated as identical merely because airline marketing uses “London.” Ask whether the substitute airport serves the same town, city or region for the legal rule and calculate practical onward transport.

A diversion to an airport in another country or a distant region can go beyond the same-city situation. Preserve whether the airline later operated the aircraft to the booked airport, cancelled the remaining movement or supplied surface transport. Classification may affect refund and rerouting rights.

Do not agree that the journey is complete simply to retrieve baggage. You can accept a reasonable transfer without waiving a fixed compensation claim based on final lateness.

Compensation after diversion

For a delay claim, legal arrival must normally reach three hours. Use the completion of easyJet's transfer to the booked or agreed destination. Then apply the distance band: EC261 provides EUR 250, EUR 400 or EUR 600; UK261 uses GBP 220, GBP 350 or GBP 520.

The airline may avoid the fixed sum by proving extraordinary circumstances and reasonable measures. Unsafe destination weather or runway closure can be a strong defence. A routine aircraft defect or ordinary operational decision usually is not. The cause of diversion and the later transfer delay should be separated.

Example: severe crosswind closes the booked airport, forcing a safe landing elsewhere. Fixed compensation may be excluded. easyJet must still arrange transfer and care. If the airline waits hours before providing a coach, the transfer duty remains even though the weather defence applies to the flight.

Rerouting or cancellation after landing elsewhere

Sometimes easyJet cannot transport passengers onward by road because of distance, borders or safety. It may offer another flight. Compare that proposal with reimbursement and earliest-opportunity rerouting rights if the original service is effectively cancelled before reaching the contracted destination.

If you still need to travel, do not choose refund merely because it is easy to select in the app. Refund normally ends carriage and ongoing care. Ask easyJet for the earliest reasonable route, including another airline where appropriate.

The easyJet alternative-flight guide explains self-booking evidence when the airline does not provide a workable route.

Meals, hotel and transfer expenses

Care continues according to the total waiting period. A diversion that strands passengers overnight can require accommodation and transport between airport and hotel. Ask easyJet to arrange services directly.

When it cannot, choose reasonable options and keep itemised receipts. easyJet's current policy refers to standard or shared transport, three-star or equivalent accommodation where available, and sensible food and non-alcoholic drink. A taxi may be reasonable when no coach or public transport operates; record the timetable and attempts to contact easyJet.

Ground transport from the substitute airport to the booked airport is not merely ordinary care. It completes the diverted journey. Keep it distinct in the expense schedule and state that easyJet offered no transfer.

Baggage during a diversion

Ask whether checked baggage will be delivered at the substitute airport, continue to the booked airport or be transported separately. Do not file a lost-bag claim while easyJet is still arranging onward delivery without first obtaining the baggage record.

If the bag does not appear and staff cannot locate it, make an airport baggage report and retain its reference. The Montreal Convention claim is separate from diversion compensation. Essential purchases require receipts and prompt written notice.

Evidence and claim structure

Create a timeline with scheduled destination arrival, diversion touchdown, door opening, transfer offer, transfer departure and arrival at the booked or agreed place. Attach the original booking, diversion message, coach or train evidence and reason communicated.

For fixed compensation, use easyJet's official portal and state the final arrival delay. For transfer, hotel and meals, use the expense form with itemised proof. If easyJet calculates only the aircraft landing, cite C-826/19 and ask it to use completion of the transfer.

If weather or ATC is raised, request the specific restriction and reasonable measures. The easyJet weather guide shows how to separate safe diversion from slow recovery.

For an unresolved UK-connected claim, easyJet's terms identify AviationADR. Other routes can involve the enforcement body or court linked to departure and operator. The future EU nine-month procedure is not yet applicable on 10 August 2026.

FAQ

Is an easyJet diversion always a cancelled flight?

No. Landing at another airport serving the same town, city or region can remain a diverted operation, provided easyJet completes the journey by transfer. More distant cases need fact-specific review.

When does delay stop after a diversion?

It generally stops when you reach the airport on the booking or another nearby destination agreed with easyJet, rather than at touchdown at the substitute airport.

Must easyJet pay the coach or train after diversion?

easyJet should offer onward transfer. If it fails to do so, reasonable transport costs can be claimed with evidence of the route, necessity and lack of airline provision.

Can weather remove all my diversion rights?

No. Severe weather may exclude fixed compensation, but transfer, care and possible refund or rerouting remain separate obligations under current rules.

What if my checked bag stays at the diversion airport?

Ask baggage staff to trace it and make a report before leaving when it cannot be delivered. Any delayed-baggage claim follows Montreal Convention procedure, distinct from the flight claim.
