Delta Heathrow delay or cancellation compensation
A Delta-operated flight departing London Heathrow can qualify for up to GBP 520 under UK261 when it is cancelled at short notice or reaches the booked final destination at least three hours late for a reason within Delta's responsibility. A direct Delta-operated flight from the United States to Heathrow normally falls outside UK261 because Delta is not a UK carrier. Virgin Atlantic operation can change that inbound result.

What happened to your flight?
Claim up to €600 for a delayed or cancelled flight.
Choose the situation that applies to your flight:
Check the “operated by” line, direction, final arrival and cause before claiming. Delta currently operates at Heathrow Terminal 3, but verify the day-of-travel terminal and gate in the boarding pass.
Heathrow route decision table
| Journey | UK261 position |
|---|---|
| Heathrow-US operated by Delta | Covered by UK departure rule |
| Heathrow-US under DL code, operated by Virgin Atlantic | Covered; Virgin is operating carrier |
| US-Heathrow operated by Delta | Normally outside UK261 |
| US-Heathrow operated by Virgin Atlantic | Can be covered because Virgin is a UK carrier |
| Heathrow-US connection on one ticket | Measure delay at the booked final destination |
| Separate US onward ticket | Usually no through-journey protection for that separate booking |
The Delta UK departures guide provides the wider legal test. This page applies it to Heathrow evidence and partner travel.
How much can a Heathrow claim be worth?
UK261 currently uses three distance bands:
| Flight distance | Standard amount |
|---|---|
| Up to 1,500 km | GBP 220 |
| 1,500–3,500 km | GBP 350 |
| Over 3,500 km | GBP 520 |
Delta's Heathrow-US services are long-haul and normally fall in the top distance band. Payment is not automatic. A delay requires at least three hours at final destination, while cancellation depends on notice, rerouting and cause.
Delta can reduce a long-distance cancellation award by 50% when rerouting arrives within the statutory time window. Use the actual replacement arrival, not the time Delta issued a new ticket.
Delay is measured at the final destination
For a direct Heathrow-New York journey, record when an aircraft door opened and passengers could disembark. Departure delay alone does not determine UK261 compensation.
For Heathrow-Atlanta-Charleston or another one-ticket connection, Charleston is the relevant final destination. A modest transatlantic delay that causes a missed connection and a five-hour final delay can qualify.
If Delta places family members on different replacement flights, calculate each person's arrival separately. The Delta missed connection guide explains one-ticket protection.
Cancellation and notice from Heathrow
When Delta cancels a covered departure, the passenger chooses refund or rerouting. Fixed compensation usually remains possible when notice arrived less than fourteen days before departure, unless the offered replacement fits the statutory timing windows or Delta proves extraordinary circumstances.
Save the timestamp of the email, text or app message. A schedule change in the reservation is not necessarily proof that the passenger received notice that day.
If travel remains necessary, ask for the earliest suitable Delta or Virgin Atlantic option and consider Air France or KLM connections. Partnership supports practical rebooking, but the original operating carrier remains responsible for the original disruption.
Delta and Virgin Atlantic codeshare
Delta and Virgin Atlantic share extensive transatlantic commercial arrangements and operate from Heathrow Terminal 3. The relationship does not merge legal identities.
If Virgin operates a DL-coded service, Virgin receives the UK261 claim. If Delta operates a VS-coded flight, Delta receives it. The operator can also change inbound scope: Virgin's UK status can cover a US-to-Heathrow service that would be outside UK261 if Delta operated it.
Preserve the original booking and boarding pass. The Delta codeshare guide gives additional examples.
Heathrow Terminal 3 evidence
Delta's current airport page places its Heathrow operation in Terminal 3 alongside its partners. It directs connecting passengers to Flight Connections and notes that separate-reservation travellers should follow arrivals, collect baggage and check in again.
At disruption, capture:
- Terminal 3 departure display and gate information;
- original and replacement boarding passes;
- Delta or Virgin “operated by” text;
- queue, chat and call attempts;
- scheduled and actual final arrival;
- baggage tag for the full routing;
- hotel, meal and local transport receipts;
- cancellation or delay reason given by staff.
Airport screens can change quickly. Photograph the whole listing with time, not only a cropped status word.
Weather, air traffic control and technical faults
Heathrow weather, air traffic restrictions, airport closure or security decisions can be extraordinary. Delta must prove that the event affected the flight and that reasonable measures could not avoid the disruption.
A routine technical malfunction or Delta staffing issue is not automatically extraordinary. “Operational reasons” gives too little detail to assess the defence. Ask for the event, timing, affected aircraft and recovery measures.
Care remains due during extraordinary circumstances. The Delta weather and ATC guide explains why a valid GBP 520 defence does not remove meals or necessary lodging.
Meals, hotel and transport at Heathrow
For a long-haul delayed departure, UK261 care is triggered when Delta expects a wait of at least four hours. Cancellation and denied boarding can require care while rerouting is awaited.
Ask Delta or its handling staff for meal vouchers, hotel and transfer. If assistance is unavailable, buy proportionate necessities and keep itemised receipts. A Heathrow hotel can be expensive; capture evidence when lower-priced practical rooms are unavailable.
Do not confuse airport-hotel transfer with transport to an entirely different final destination. Label each expense and explain why it was necessary.
Direct US-to-Heathrow Delta flights
Atlanta-Heathrow, New York-Heathrow and other Delta-operated US departures ordinarily do not qualify under UK261 because Delta is not established as a UK carrier. A London destination does not change the origin rule.
DOT refund protection applies when Delta cancels or significantly changes the flight and the passenger rejects alternatives without travelling. Delta's controllable-disruption commitments can also provide rebooking, meals or lodging.
If Virgin Atlantic actually operates the inbound service, recheck UK261. Do not infer operator from where the ticket was bought.
Claim and escalation path
Submit the complete claim to the operating carrier. State Heathrow departure, UK261, ticket number, final destination, final arrival and amount in GBP. Attach evidence rather than sending only a booking reference.
If Delta rejects the claim, ask for the precise extraordinary event and reasonable measures. Delta is currently listed by the UK CAA for AviationADR. The scheme generally expects the airline to receive the complaint first; current eligibility and timing should be checked before filing.
The Delta escalation guide explains the difference between an authority report and individual dispute resolution.
Worked examples
Heathrow-Atlanta arrives four hours late after routine component failure: Delta operates a covered UK departure. The passenger can seek GBP 520, subject to Delta's evidence and no reduction rule for an ordinary delay.
Heathrow-New York cancelled by severe airport closure: refund or rerouting and care remain; documented closure may defeat fixed compensation.
New York-Heathrow operated by Delta: UK261 normally does not apply. Use DOT refund and Delta policy rights.
Boston-Heathrow under a DL number operated by Virgin: Virgin is a UK operating carrier, so inbound UK261 can apply.
FAQ
Can a Delta flight from Heathrow receive GBP 520?
Yes. A qualifying long-haul UK departure can receive GBP 520 per passenger before any permitted rerouting reduction.
Is a Delta flight from New York to Heathrow covered?
Not ordinarily when Delta operates it, because Delta is not a UK carrier and departure is outside the UK.
Who pays when Virgin operates my DL-coded flight?
Virgin Atlantic is the operating carrier and normally handles the statutory claim for its flight.
Which Heathrow terminal does Delta currently use?
Delta currently states Terminal 3, but check the boarding pass and airport information on travel day.
Can I claim a hotel during Heathrow weather disruption?
Yes, reasonable UK261 care can remain due on a protected journey even when weather defeats fixed compensation.
