Covered origin still comes first
A Delta-operated connecting journey leaving Paris, Amsterdam, Dublin or another covered European airport can fall under EU261. A Delta-operated journey leaving Heathrow can fall under UK261. The regulations can remain relevant when the later connection is inside the United States.
The reverse Delta-operated journey that starts in the United States normally has no fixed European payment. Missing a Paris connection after a Delta New York departure does not create EU261 merely because the final city is in Europe. Partner operation by Air France, KLM or Virgin Atlantic can change inbound scope.

Final arrival, not missed-flight time
Missing a connection does not itself set the fixed amount. Compare scheduled and actual arrival at the final destination under the protected reservation. The relevant arrival time is generally aircraft-door opening.
Examples:
- Amsterdam-Atlanta-Nashville reaches Nashville 5:20 late: use Nashville;
- London-New York-Buffalo reaches Buffalo 2:45 late: fixed delay payment normally misses three hours;
- Paris-Detroit arrives 2:30 late and a separate Detroit-Chicago ticket is missed: Chicago usually does not extend the EU261 clock;
- Paris-Atlanta-New Orleans is rerouted to arrive 3:25 late: long-distance reduction can matter.
Keep the original scheduled connection and replacement arrival. Delta's app may show only the latest itinerary after rebooking.
Who caused the missed connection
List the operating airline for every segment. Delta mainline, a Delta Connection carrier, Air France, KLM or Virgin Atlantic may have performed different flights under DL numbers.
The statutory respondent normally follows the operating carrier connected to the protected disruption. A marketing agreement or joint venture does not make every partner jointly liable. If a Delta Connection airline operated the delayed US sector, retain its name and do not describe it only as Delta.
Where several disruptions contributed, build a chronology and ask each carrier to identify its role. Avoid duplicate recovery of one fixed payment.

Passenger conduct and connection formalities
The traveller must make reasonable efforts to complete the connection. Follow airport signs, entry, security and baggage procedures; tell Delta promptly if assistance is needed. Record gate arrival and any instruction from staff.
At the first US port of entry, passengers generally complete immigration and customs unless they were processed through preclearance or a current approved exception. Some routes and airports now use streamlined baggage or security programmes, so follow the specific instructions for that journey instead of assuming one universal process.
If Delta argues that the passenger caused the miss, provide arrival-gate time, queues, assistance requests, recheck steps and gate closure. A connection sold on one ticket is evidence that the planned transfer met applicable scheduling rules, but it does not excuse a passenger who ignored required formalities.
Rerouting after a protected misconnection

If the offered route arrives much later, identify a concrete alternative with carrier, departure time, cabin and available fare. Give Delta a practical chance to arrange it. Self-purchase without asking first carries recovery risk unless assistance was unavailable and urgency justified the expense.

Care during the extended journey
On a protected EU or UK journey, reasonable food, communication, hotel and airport-hotel transport can become due while the passenger waits. Care does not depend on Delta being at fault and can continue during weather or air traffic restrictions.
Request vouchers and accommodation at the connecting airport. If Delta provides nothing adequate, keep itemised receipts and document the refusal. A passenger stranded at their home or final destination can face different hotel treatment under Delta's commercial policy, but mandatory care on the protected journey must be assessed independently.
Compensation amount after a missed connection
Measure distance from the protected origin to the final destination rather than adding each flight. Most Europe-US connecting journeys exceed 3,500 km and begin with EUR 600 or GBP 520.
For a long-distance arrival between three and four hours late, a 50% reduction can be relevant. Compensation belongs to each eligible passenger. Ticket refund, meal costs and downgrade reimbursement remain separate.
An extraordinary event can defeat the fixed amount only if the operating carrier proves causation and reasonable measures. The need to reorganise aircraft after an earlier external event should be examined rather than accepted automatically.
Separate tickets and limited recovery
Delta's published through-check policy warns that it is generally not responsible for missed onward connections on separately ticketed travel. Minimum connection times designed for sold connections may not protect an itinerary assembled segment by segment.
If Delta cancels or significantly changes its own separate ticket and the passenger declines alternatives, refund rights can still apply to that ticket. Travel insurance or the seller may address the lost onward fare. Do not present the second contract as Delta's statutory final destination without a legal basis.
Ask the later airline whether it will protect the passenger as goodwill and act before no-show rules cancel remaining coupons.

Save the original complete e-ticket, confirmation, operated-by wording, scheduled connection, baggage tags and each replacement. Record door opening at the first airport, gate arrival for the onward flight, final door opening and airport procedures completed.
