Delta family, group and accessibility disruption claims
Each eligible passenger on a covered Delta disruption can receive their own EU261 or UK261 fixed compensation, including a child with a confirmed paid or frequent-flyer reservation. A family or group should list every ticket number rather than treating the booking as one award. Shared hotel and transport expenses are claimed once at actual cost, while accessibility assistance must continue through rerouting.

Check your case in the form
Enter your route, date and type of disruption. We will check whether your case qualifies for a claim under EU 261/2004 or UK261.
What happened to your flight?
Claim up to €600 for a delayed or cancelled flight.
Choose the situation that applies to your flight:
A direct Delta-operated flight from the United States normally has no EU261 or UK261 fixed compensation. Families still retain DOT, Delta policy, disability and refund protections applicable to that direction.
Per passenger or per booking?
| Remedy | How to count it |
|---|---|
| EU261 or UK261 fixed compensation | Per eligible passenger |
| Unused ticket refund | Per ticket and unused value |
| Meal expense | Actual reasonable spending for affected travellers |
| Hotel room | Actual room cost, not multiplied by occupants |
| Airport-hotel transfer | Actual paid journey, allocated once |
| Damaged mobility device | Separate accessibility and baggage claim based on actual loss |
The Delta compensation amount guide explains the distance bands. Add a passenger schedule to show who qualifies and which remedy belongs to each person.
Children and infants
A child travelling on a confirmed ticket is not paid a smaller EU261 or UK261 amount because of age or a discounted fare. Award tickets issued under a frequent-flyer programme can also be covered.
An infant travelling without a separate seat may have a different ticket and fare structure. Preserve the infant document, taxes and reservation status rather than assuming eligibility or exclusion. A genuinely free arrangement not available to the public can fall outside the regulation, while a publicly available commercial infant ticket requires its own assessment.
List the child's name, ticket number and boarding status. A parent's claim form should state legal authority to act for the minor and provide payment details accepted by the airline.
One PNR does not create one payment
For a family of four on a qualifying long-haul EU departure, the potential standard amount can be four times EUR 600, subject to reason, arrival and any lawful reduction. Delta should not issue only one payment because the passengers shared a booking reference.
Create a table with name, ticket number, age category, operating flight, final arrival and amount. If one passenger did not travel or accepted a different route, explain that separately.
For a larger tour group, the organiser can coordinate evidence, but each passenger remains identifiable. Obtain authority before submitting another adult's personal or bank information.
Route coverage remains decisive
A Delta-operated flight leaving Paris, Amsterdam or another covered EU/EEA airport can fall under EU261. A Delta-operated flight leaving the United Kingdom can fall under UK261.
The reverse Delta-operated direction from the United States normally falls outside because Delta is neither an EU nor UK carrier. A family landing in Europe does not gain the fixed award solely from its destination.
Partner operation can change inbound protection. Air France and KLM are EU carriers; Virgin Atlantic is a UK carrier. Check “operated by” on every family member's ticket and use the Delta codeshare guide.
Priority care for vulnerable travellers
Regulation 261 requires particular attention to persons with reduced mobility and companions, as well as unaccompanied children. General care still includes reasonable meals, communication, hotel and transport when the protected wait qualifies.
Tell Delta about medication, mobility, sensory, dietary and child-safety needs as soon as disruption occurs. A standard voucher may be unusable for a passenger who cannot reach the outlet or whose medical diet is unavailable.
Document the request and proposed solution. Reasonable care is based on actual need and delay, not a flat family allowance.
Preserve accessible services during rerouting
A replacement flight is not suitable if confirmed wheelchair assistance, space for a mobility device, accessible seating or another essential service disappears. Ask Delta to carry every special service request into the new itinerary.
Delta allows accessible service requests in My Trips and has trained Complaint Resolution Officials at airports. Ask for one when a disability-related issue cannot be resolved by ordinary staff.
If a specific aircraft cannot accommodate a wheelchair or scooter, request an appropriate alternative. Delta currently provides a defined fare-difference refund process for certain directly purchased, Delta-operated itineraries where the passenger had to choose a more expensive flight because the device would not fit. Check its detailed eligibility and preserve same-day price screenshots.
Seating families after rebooking
An automatic change can scatter a family across the cabin. Contact Delta promptly with children's ages, companion needs and existing seat payments. Keep the original assignments and receipts.
Loss of a preferred seat is not the same as a statutory cabin downgrade. Request refund of a paid seat product not delivered. If a passenger is moved from a purchased premium cabin to Economy, preserve the boarding pass for a separate 30%, 50% or 75% downgrade assessment on a covered flight.
Safety seating decisions for children or carers should be raised before boarding. Do not wait until after departure to record an essential adjacency request.
Care expenses for a group
One parent may pay for two rooms, meals and a taxi. Submit the actual receipts once and list the passengers covered. Do not duplicate the full room cost under each fixed-compensation claim.
Choose accommodation that safely fits the party. If airport vouchers split young children from the responsible adult or ignore an accessible room requirement, explain the problem and ask Delta to correct it before self-booking.
The Delta right to care guide explains why extraordinary weather does not remove care on a protected journey.
Missed connections and split rerouting
On one reservation, final arrival is measured at the booked destination. If Delta offers to split a family across flights, compare arrival, care, consent and child supervision. The family can request a joint suitable route, though availability may make a voluntary split the fastest option.
Record which passengers took which replacement. Their arrival times and possible compensation reduction can differ.
Separate tickets remain separate even when family members bought them together. Protect each onward booking and notify the next carrier immediately.
Evidence schedule
For every traveller, keep ticket, PNR, boarding pass, operator and final arrival. Add birth or guardianship material only when genuinely necessary and transmit it securely.
For accessibility, retain the special service request code, device specifications, communications and airport report. Photograph mobility equipment before handover and on return.
Build three schedules:
- passengers and fixed amounts;
- ticket refunds or cabin changes;
- shared expenses with payer and occupants.
This makes payment reconciliation straightforward and prevents Delta from closing unresolved passengers after settling one adult.
Worked examples
Family of four from Paris to New York: Delta arrives five hours late for a controllable reason. If all four held covered tickets, each can be assessed for EUR 600; shared meal and taxi receipts are not multiplied.
Atlanta-London with two children: Delta operates from the United States. UK261 fixed compensation ordinarily does not apply; use US refund and Delta disruption protections.
Wheelchair user rerouted from Amsterdam: EU261 covers the departure. Delta should preserve assistance and reasonable care, while any device damage has a separate claim.
Group split over two replacements: list each passenger's actual final arrival because the compensation result may differ between flights.
FAQ
Is Delta compensation paid per family or per passenger?
Fixed EU261 or UK261 compensation is assessed for each eligible ticketed passenger, not once for the booking.
Can a child receive the full statutory amount?
Yes when the child has a covered confirmed commercial or frequent-flyer ticket; age does not reduce the distance band.
Should hotel cost be multiplied by every traveller?
No. Claim the actual reasonable room cost once and identify the affected occupants.
What if Delta drops wheelchair assistance after rebooking?
Ask it to restore the service immediately and request an airport Complaint Resolution Official if the issue remains unresolved.
Does a family flying Delta from the US to Europe receive EU261?
Not ordinarily on a Delta-operated departure, because Delta is not an EU carrier and the journey begins outside the covered area.
