Delta compensation calculator: EUR 250, 400 or 600

A Delta claim is calculated per passenger from the protected journey's distance, governing regime and replacement arrival time, not from ticket price. Current EU261 bands are EUR 250, EUR 400 and EUR 600; UK261 uses GBP 220, GBP 350 and GBP 520. Before selecting an amount, confirm that the journey left the EU/EEA/Switzerland or the UK, or that a qualifying European partner operated an inbound flight.

Check your case in the form

Enter your route, date and type of disruption. We will check whether your case qualifies for a claim under EU 261/2004 or UK261.

Step 1 of 813% completed

What happened to your flight?

Claim up to €600 for a delayed or cancelled flight.

Choose the situation that applies to your flight:

Most Delta-operated nonstop departures from Europe to the United States are longer than 3,500 km and therefore start in the highest band.

Quick amount table

Protected journeyEU261 amount per passengerUK261 amount per passenger
Up to 1,500 kmEUR 250GBP 220
1,500-3,500 kmEUR 400GBP 350
Other journeys over 3,500 kmEUR 600GBP 520

Longer intra-EU journeys remain in the EUR 400 category. UK statutory categories use their own wording and sterling values, so do not simply exchange euros into pounds.

Step 1: establish territorial eligibility

The largest distance band is irrelevant if the route is outside the regulation. Delta is a US carrier, which creates a directional split:

  • Delta-operated Paris-New York can fall under EU261;
  • Delta-operated London-Atlanta can fall under UK261;
  • Delta-operated New York-Paris normally does not fall under EU261;
  • Delta-operated Atlanta-London normally does not receive UK261 fixed compensation;
  • a DL-coded inbound flight operated by Air France, KLM or Virgin Atlantic can produce another answer.

A return ticket does not make both directions identical. Assess each protected journey separately and record the operating airline for the disrupted segment.

The Delta US-to-Europe page prevents an amount calculation from turning an uncovered inbound delay into a false EUR 600 claim.

Step 2: measure the protected distance

Use great-circle distance between the first departure point and the final destination relevant to the disrupted booking. Do not add the mileage of each connection. On a single Amsterdam-Atlanta-Orlando itinerary, distance is assessed from Amsterdam to Orlando rather than by summing two flown sectors.

The last destination affected by the disruption matters. If a delay on the first leg does not affect a later independent booking, that self-transfer city is not automatically part of the calculation.

For borderline routes, use reliable airport coordinates and record the method. A marketing description such as "transatlantic" is not a legal distance measurement.

Step 3: identify the event

The same bands can apply to eligible long arrival delay, short-notice cancellation and involuntary denied boarding. The trigger differs:

EventCore amount test
DelayFinal arrival at least 3 hours late and no valid extraordinary defence
CancellationNotice and rerouting windows, plus cause
Denied boardingPassenger was ready to travel and removal was involuntary

A downgrade uses a percentage refund rather than these fixed bands. Hotel, meal and transport reimbursement is based on reasonable expenditure, not distance.

Step 4: test the 50% reduction

The operating carrier can reduce fixed compensation by half when rerouting reaches the destination within the statutory time window. For long-distance travel beyond 3,500 km, arrival no more than four hours after schedule can produce EUR 300 instead of EUR 600, or the corresponding reduced UK amount.

This often affects Delta delays between three and four hours. The threshold is measured at the final destination using aircraft-door opening, not touchdown. Once long-distance arrival exceeds four hours, the full top band normally becomes the starting figure.

Do not accept a half-payment without checking the recorded arrival. Ask Delta which reduction window it applied.

Step 5: multiply by eligible passengers

Compensation belongs to each traveller. A booking with two adults and two fare-paying children can produce four separate amounts. One person may submit the claims together, but the calculation should list every passenger and ticket number.

Examples:

  • four passengers at EUR 600 each: EUR 2,400 total;
  • three passengers in a reduced EUR 300 long-haul case: EUR 900 total;
  • two passengers at GBP 520 each: GBP 1,040 total.

Do not multiply care receipts that were paid once for the room or meal. Reimburse the proven expenditure only once while keeping fixed payments per person.

An infant travelling free without a seat can require closer legal review. Preserve the infant ticket or document and the fare charged rather than assuming eligibility either way.

Ticket price does not cap the fixed amount

A low promotional fare or SkyMiles award can still support statutory compensation. The regulation excludes certain free or reduced tickets unavailable to the public, but a standard frequent-flyer award is generally treated differently.

Likewise, an expensive Delta One ticket does not increase EUR 600 to the cabin price. Cabin downgrade, unused upgrades or fare difference can create separate reimbursement, which should be calculated independently.

The SkyMiles and upgrade guide separates the fixed claim from mileage redeposit and paid services.

Connection examples

Paris-Atlanta-Charleston, one reservation: a controllable misconnection causes arrival in Charleston five hours late. The protected journey starts in the EU and exceeds 3,500 km, so EUR 600 per passenger is the initial calculation.

Amsterdam-New York, door opens 3:35 late: the route is long distance, but the under-four-hour arrival can allow a reduction to EUR 300.

London-Boston, cancelled on travel day: Delta reroutes the passenger to arrive six hours late. If no extraordinary defence applies, GBP 520 is the standard long-distance amount.

Boston-Amsterdam operated by Delta: distance exceeds 3,500 km, yet EU261 fixed compensation normally remains zero because the non-EU carrier started outside Europe.

New York-Amsterdam marketed as DL but operated by KLM: KLM's EU status can bring the inbound service within EU261. Direct the claim to KLM and then calculate its distance band.

Amounts that must stay separate

One disruption can involve several financial lines:

  1. fixed compensation per passenger;
  2. refund of an unused ticket after cancellation or abandonment;
  3. reasonable care expenses;
  4. downgrade percentage on the affected sector;
  5. Montreal Convention proven damage;
  6. refund of an unprovided ancillary service.

Adding all ticket and hotel amounts into a single "compensation" total invites an incomplete response. Present a labelled schedule with legal basis and evidence for each line.

Evidence for the calculation

Save the complete e-ticket, passenger names, ticket numbers, original schedule and actual arrival. Document the operating carrier and every connection under the same reservation. For cancellation, add notice time and replacement arrival; for denied boarding, add written confirmation and volunteer status.

Include a short arithmetic table in the claim. State route distance source, band, reduction analysis and passenger count. Delta can then disagree with a specific input rather than dismiss an unexplained total.

Use the general calculator as an eligibility screen, then verify the legal facts against the original booking.

FAQ

Is every Delta transatlantic claim worth EUR 600?

No. The journey must first be covered, and an eligible long-distance arrival between three and four hours late can permit a 50% reduction.

Is compensation based on the cost of my Delta ticket?

No. Fixed amounts use statutory distance bands, while ticket refund and downgrade calculations follow different rules.

Do children receive the same amount as adults?

Fare-paying children generally have individual claims under the same bands. Infant ticket facts should be checked separately.

How is distance calculated on a connecting itinerary?

Use the protected origin and final destination affected on the single booking, rather than adding every sector's mileage.

Can I claim EUR 600 and my hotel bill?

Potentially yes because fixed compensation and reasonable care costs are distinct, but the hotel expense must be proven and not recovered twice.
