Virgin Atlantic compensation amounts: GBP 220, GBP 350 or GBP 520
Virgin Atlantic’s current UK261 fixed amounts are GBP 220 for protected journeys up to 1,500 kilometres, GBP 350 for many journeys between 1,500 and 3,500 kilometres, and up to GBP 520 for longer journeys. A long-haul arrival delayed between three and four hours is normally reduced to GBP 260. Distance alone does not create entitlement: route coverage, event timing, operating carrier and cause must all pass their own tests.

The amount is calculated per eligible passenger. It is not a percentage of ticket price and does not rise because someone travelled in Upper Class. A refund, downgrade reimbursement, reasonable care costs and baggage damages use different calculations.
Current UK261 bands
| Protected journey | Qualifying event | Fixed amount per passenger |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 1,500 km | Delay of at least three hours, qualifying cancellation or denied boarding | GBP 220 |
| 1,500-3,500 km | Delay of at least three hours, qualifying cancellation or denied boarding | GBP 350 |
| Over 3,500 km | Arrival delay from three to four hours | GBP 260 |
| Over 3,500 km | Arrival delay over four hours | GBP 520 |
| Over 3,500 km | Cancellation or denied boarding, subject to reduction rules | Up to GBP 520 |
Use the great-circle distance between the relevant origin and final destination for the protected journey, not points earned, flown detours or the airline’s operational mileage. Connections on one booking can make the last ticketed destination relevant. Independent tickets are normally assessed as separate contracts.
Why long-haul does not always mean GBP 520
Most Virgin-operated routes are long, but the top figure still depends on event and timing. For delay, a final arrival three hours and thirty minutes late on a journey over 3,500 kilometres generally sits at GBP 260. Arrival four hours and twenty minutes late can reach GBP 520 if UK261 covers the route and the airline lacks a successful extraordinary-circumstances defence.
For cancellation or denied boarding, rerouting arrival can allow a 50% reduction when it remains within the statutory time window. Record both original and replacement schedules. A cancellation fourteen or more days before departure normally produces no fixed cancellation payment, despite the route length.
The three- and four-hour guide focuses on the long-distance timing boundary. Never round a delay upward to reach a more favourable band.
Coverage comes before calculation
Virgin Atlantic Airways Limited is a UK carrier. UK departures on any airline are covered, and Virgin-operated flights arriving in the UK from outside are generally protected. Thus a Virgin-operated Orlando-London service may qualify in the inbound direction. If Delta actually operates the service under a VS marketing code, the operator’s status and the applicable route rule must be assessed instead.
EU261 can cover Virgin departures from the EU, where the currency bands are EUR 250, EUR 400 and EUR 600. A standalone Virgin flight from the United States to Paris generally does not qualify under EU261 merely because France is the destination. A flight from Paris to the United States can qualify because it leaves the EU.
Do not add a UK award and an EU award for the same inconvenience. Determine which framework governs the protected journey and credit overlapping redress where necessary. The UK261 versus EU261 guide provides route-direction examples.
Worked passenger examples
Couple arriving from New York
Two adults travel on a Virgin-operated New York-London booking and arrive four hours and fifteen minutes late because of an ordinary operational failure. Each could claim GBP 520, making a total potential fixed claim of GBP 1,040. One hotel receipt from a missed onward self-transfer would not automatically become part of UK261 compensation; expenses need their own legal basis.
Family rerouted after cancellation
Two adults and two ticketed children travel London-Johannesburg. Virgin cancels at short notice and reroutes them to arrive five hours late. If no extraordinary defence applies, each passenger may be assessed for the long-distance amount, producing a possible total of GBP 2,080. If the replacement arrival falls inside a statutory reduction window, the figure may be lower.
Reward-seat passenger
A passenger uses Virgin Points for a publicly available reward seat and pays taxes and charges. Reward travel is not automatically excluded from passenger-rights protection. Fixed compensation is still distance-based rather than limited to the cash component, while reimbursement of an abandoned reward booking involves reinstating points and relevant money.
Lap infant
An infant without a paid seat needs examination of the ticket and fare. Do not assume either full entitlement or automatic exclusion from the family total. Preserve the infant ticket record and amounts paid.
Separate calculations that are often confused
A ticket refund returns the value of unused transportation. It can exceed or fall below GBP 520 and does not depend on airline fault. Downgrade reimbursement uses 30%, 50% or 75% of the price attributable to the affected flight, not the fixed distance table. Care costs repay reasonable proven spending. Montreal baggage claims compensate established loss up to a liability ceiling rather than awarding a standard sum.
One disruption can support several remedies. For example, a passenger rerouted after cancellation may receive fixed compensation, reimbursement for meals and a downgrade percentage. Each needs its own facts and the same loss cannot be paid twice.
US DOT and Canadian APPR amounts are also distinct. DOT protects refunds and denied boarding on covered US itineraries but does not supply a general US cash award for every long delay. Canadian APPR uses Canadian-dollar bands and a control-and-safety test. Currency labels help prevent a claim under the wrong regime.
Cause and reasonable measures
After finding the band, investigate why the flight failed. Ordinary technical or operational issues often remain within the carrier’s activity. Severe weather, external air traffic restrictions, security events or airport closure can qualify as extraordinary if they caused this flight and reasonable measures could not avoid the outcome.
Virgin should provide more than a category. Ask for the event’s location and timing, its link to the aircraft or rotation and the mitigation considered. Even where the fixed sum is not payable, care and travel-choice rights may remain.
Present a transparent calculation
Attach the original itinerary, operated-by line, ticket, boarding passes, notice and final arrival evidence. State the route endpoints used for distance, whether sectors formed one booking, the delay in hours and minutes, and the amount requested for each named passenger.
Use the Virgin Atlantic calculator guide to test the facts before submitting. Keep refunds and itemised expenses under separate headings so the airline can decide each remedy without guessing.
Amounts and official guidance were checked on 26 August 2026. Later exchange rates do not convert UK261 into the EU’s euro table.
FAQ
Is every transatlantic Virgin delay worth GBP 520?
No. The route must be protected, final delay normally must exceed four hours for the full long-haul amount, and the cause test must favour the passenger.
Is compensation calculated from my ticket price?
No. Fixed UK261 compensation uses distance and event rules. Ticket price matters for refunds and can matter for a cabin downgrade.
Do children receive the same amount as adults?
Ticketed children are generally assessed per passenger on the same basis. Free lap-infant arrangements require closer review of the travel document and fare.
Can Virgin pay GBP 260 instead of GBP 520?
Yes. A long-distance arrival between three and four hours late normally attracts GBP 260, and qualifying rerouting can also permit a 50% reduction in specific cases.
Are hotel expenses included in the fixed amount?
No. Necessary hotel, meal and transport costs are separate care claims supported by receipts and reasonableness evidence.
