United replacement flight or train: can you recover the cost?

A passenger can have a strong claim for reasonable replacement transport when a covered cancellation or denied boarding required rerouting and United failed to offer it at the earliest opportunity. Give United a fair chance to transport you, identify a concrete alternative, preserve any refusal and avoid an unnecessary upgrade before self-booking.

Enter your route, date and type of disruption. We will check whether your case qualifies for a claim under EU 261/2004 or UK261.

What happened to your flight?

Claim up to €600 for a delayed or cancelled flight.

Choose the situation that applies to your flight:

This is primarily an EU261 or UK261 rerouting issue for United departures from Europe or the UK. A United-operated US-origin disruption normally has no equivalent European statutory rerouting right, though DOT refund, contract, insurance or a written United promise may help.

When self-booking is strongest

EvidenceWhy it helps
United cancellation or involuntary denialEstablishes the transport duty
Request for earliest reroutingShows United had an opportunity to perform
Specific available alternativeProves a practical solution existed
Refusal, no response or clearly late offerExplains why self-help was necessary
Comparable cabin and routeSupports reasonableness
Receipt and proof of useProves actual loss

Buying first and asking later can still be justified in an urgent abandonment, but the evidential risk is higher.

The rerouting duty is not limited to United

European Commission guidance says comparable rerouting can use another carrier or a different transport mode, without extra passenger cost, where suitable. The assessment considers total travel time, cabin, additional connections, accessibility and final destination.

Star Alliance inventory can be relevant but is not the legal boundary. A non-alliance flight or train can be the reasonable earliest solution. Conversely, a very expensive premium ticket is not automatically recoverable merely because it was visible.

Ask United for the identified flight or train. Save route, date, time, cabin, price and seat availability. If the airline offers another option arriving almost as early under comparable conditions, choosing a much more expensive alternative may be difficult to justify.

Replacement flight calculation

Claim the amount actually and reasonably paid, not an invented statutory multiple. If United already refunded the original ticket, explain both amounts. Commission guidance indicates that unilateral refund does not necessarily extinguish the price difference where the carrier failed to offer the protected rerouting choice.

Avoid double recovery. A passenger should not receive both full reimbursement for the same unused transport and the whole replacement cost without accounting for the original refund. Present a transparent net calculation.

Fixed compensation remains separate. A Frankfurt-US cancellation may support both reasonable replacement cost and EUR 600 if its independent notice and cause tests are met.

Train, bus or ground transport

A train can be sensible for a short feeder, an airport transfer or a reroute to another departure point. Compare total journey and accessibility. Preserve the ticket, reservation, journey log and why it was closer to the original plan than United's offer.

If United moves you to another airport, transfer cost may be part of the carrier's duty. Do not label ordinary local transport at the destination as replacement travel unless the disruption made it necessary.

A rental car introduces fuel, insurance, one-way fees and usage questions. Use it only where proportionate and document why collective transport was unavailable. Claims for personal time or stress are not the same as evidenced rerouting cost.

Missed connections and one booking

On a directly connecting booking, United's obligation is to the final ticketed destination. If a Dublin-Newark delay causes a missed Newark-Pittsburgh connection, do not accept a solution ending in Newark unless you freely agree and account for onward transport.

Separate tickets do not normally share EU261 protection. A replacement for the independent second ticket may instead depend on insurance, an OTA guarantee or provable damage under another legal basis.

Use the United missed-connection guide to test whether the journey is one protected unit.

Protect the return sectors

Tell United that you are self-rerouting because it failed to provide timely transport and ask it to preserve unaffected return or onward sectors. Missing the original outbound can trigger automated no-show cancellation.

Check baggage. If bags remain under United control, obtain instructions before leaving. Keep any delivery or essential-purchase claim separate.

If the replacement is in a lower cabin, reserve downgrade rights. If it is in a higher cabin because no comparable seat exists, document that fact and the alternatives rather than assuming the full premium will be accepted.

US-origin disruptions

DOT guarantees refund after cancellation or defined significant change when the passenger rejects alternatives. It generally does not create the same right to force United to buy a preferred replacement on another airline.

For a United-operated Denver-London cancellation, ask United to rebook and preserve any written commitment. If you reject travel, seek the DOT refund. A self-bought competitor ticket may depend on United's agreement, contract, state law or insurance rather than UK261.

Codeshare operator status can change inbound European scope. A Lufthansa-operated US-Europe flight can be within EU261 even when sold with a UA code.

Claim file and wording

  • original and reissued ticket;
  • cancellation or denied-boarding proof;
  • chat, call case numbers and airport requests;
  • screenshots of United and alternative options;
  • exact refusal or unacceptable arrival time;
  • replacement receipt and payment evidence;
  • boarding pass or train proof of use;
  • original refund received, if any;
  • net amount claimed and explanation.

Use United Customer Care for disruption expenses. State why the purchase was necessary, comparable and proportionate. The Star Alliance rerouting guide provides a pre-purchase checklist.

Example: Brussels to Cleveland

United cancels a covered Brussels-Newark-Cleveland journey and offers arrival three days later. A same-day partner route has economy seats. The passenger asks United to book it, preserves a written refusal and buys the reasonable alternative. EU261 can support recovery of replacement cost, accounting for any original-ticket refund, while fixed compensation is assessed separately.

If the journey begins in Cleveland and United operates it, the European rerouting rule normally does not apply. DOT refund and any United promise are the main starting points.

FAQ

Can I book another airline immediately after United cancels?

Ask United for earliest rerouting first where possible. Self-booking is strongest after a documented failure or clearly inadequate offer.

Can rerouting include a train?

Yes, a different transport mode can be reasonable under comparable conditions, depending on route, time and accessibility.

What if United already refunded the old ticket?

Show the refund and calculate the remaining reasonable loss. A unilateral refund does not always erase a prior rerouting failure.

Can I recover a business-class replacement?

Potentially if it was comparable to the original cabin and no reasonable lower-cost option existed. Preserve availability evidence.

Does this apply to a United cancellation from the US?

Normally not under EU261 or UK261 when United operates the flight. Check DOT refund, United's written offer, contract and insurance.
