United Airlines Star Alliance rerouting and replacement flights

After United cancels a flight covered by EU261 or UK261, you can choose rerouting at the earliest opportunity under comparable conditions. That can require a realistic partner flight, but Star Alliance membership does not by itself guarantee a seat on every member. Ask United for the specific available option and preserve its answer before buying replacement travel yourself.

Free eligibility check

Check your case in the form

Enter your route, date and type of disruption. We will check whether your case qualifies for a claim under EU 261/2004 or UK261.

Step 1 of 813% completed

What happened to your flight?

Claim up to €600 for a delayed or cancelled flight.

Choose the situation that applies to your flight:

Check whether your United journey is covered. A United-operated flight beginning in the United States normally has no EU261 or UK261 rerouting right, although US refund rules can apply if United cancels or significantly changes the itinerary and you reject the alternative.

What United should offer on a covered cancellation

Your decisionMain resultImportant consequence
Travel as soon as possibleRerouting at the earliest opportunityUnited should assess reasonable available routes
Travel laterRerouting on a later convenient dateSubject to seat availability
Abandon the tripReimbursement of eligible unused travelYou normally give up rerouting for those sectors

These choices are alternatives. Fixed cancellation compensation is a separate question based on notice, replacement timing, cause and territorial scope.

Does United have to use Lufthansa or another partner?

The protected standard is timely rerouting under comparable transport conditions, not a promise that every alliance inventory must be opened. A sensible request may nevertheless identify an available Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Air Canada or other flight that reaches the ticketed destination substantially earlier than United's first proposal.

Give the agent enough detail to evaluate it: date, departure time, route, operating carrier, cabin and visible availability. Ask for the reason if the option is refused. A generic statement that United only rebooks on its own aircraft is not a complete assessment of the statutory rerouting duty.

Star Alliance is not a carrier and cannot issue compensation. The obligation rests with the airline responsible under the applicable passenger-rights rules.

Compare the whole journey, not only the next sector

The fastest flight to a hub may be useless if it breaks the remaining connection. Compare arrival at the final ticketed airport, minimum connection time, immigration, baggage transfer, airport changes, transit permission and accessibility needs.

For a single booking from Europe through a United hub, rerouting should protect the final destination. A substitute to Newark without an onward seat does not complete a Brussels-Newark-Orlando itinerary. Separate tickets are different: the first carrier does not normally owe transport to the destination on an independent second booking.

Preserve the original operated-by details. The airline operating the cancelled flight may differ from the partner that ultimately carries you, and accepting the replacement does not automatically transfer the fixed claim to the new operator.

Cabin and comparable conditions

Comparable conditions do not always mean the identical seat number or aircraft type. Cabin is more important. If a Polaris passenger is rerouted in economy, record the involuntary downgrade and request the applicable fare reimbursement separately.

Do not pay a large fare difference merely because the app offers a retail change. Ask an agent to process the journey as involuntary rerouting. If only a lower cabin is available and the journey is urgent, state in writing that you accept transport without waiving the downgrade claim.

An upgrade to a higher cabin should not generate an extra charge where the carrier chooses it to complete protected rerouting.

Before self-booking a replacement

Self-booking can be reasonable when United fails to provide timely rerouting, but it creates an evidence burden. Take these steps where circumstances permit:

  1. Ask United for earliest rerouting to the final destination.
  2. Identify a specific reasonable alternative with seats.
  3. Save screenshots showing time, cabin and price.
  4. Preserve the refusal, no-response record or clearly inadequate offer.
  5. Buy a proportionate replacement, avoiding unnecessary upgrades.
  6. Keep the receipt, ticket, boarding passes and proof of use.

At an airport, use chat and screenshots while also queuing. Record names or case numbers rather than secretly recording staff where local law restricts it. If the situation is urgent, explain why waiting longer would defeat the trip.

The replacement transport guide examines recovery of a self-booked ticket after the airline fails to reroute.

What happens to the original ticket?

Do not click a voluntary cancellation button before United's cancellation and your rerouting request are documented. It can change how the transaction is coded. If you buy replacement travel, ask United not to cancel useful return sectors as a no-show consequence.

When you choose reimbursement instead, identify every unused sector and any used sector that no longer serves the original travel purpose. Do not accept duplicate recovery: the aim is to restore the cost or transport owed, not receive both a full unused-ticket refund and reimbursement for the same replacement without a legal basis.

United departure from the US

For Newark-Frankfurt operated by United, EU261 normally does not apply because the journey starts outside the EU and United is not an EU carrier. The same directional problem usually excludes UK261 on United's Newark-Heathrow service.

DOT rules can still require a refund when United cancels or makes a qualifying significant change and the passenger does not accept rebooking, a credit or other alternative. US law does not generally create the same statutory right to partner rerouting or the same EUR 600/GBP 520 inconvenience payment.

A codeshare may change the inbound European answer. Read the United-Lufthansa-SWISS operator guide if the ticket shows a UA number but another airline under operated by.

Evidence checklist

  • original and reissued itinerary;
  • cancellation notice and exact delivery time;
  • every United rerouting offer;
  • partner option, availability and price screenshots;
  • chat transcript, case number or airport refusal;
  • replacement receipt and proof of payment;
  • boarding passes showing the route actually used;
  • cabin evidence and any extra hotel or ground-transport receipts.

Submit ticket reimbursement, fixed compensation and care expenses as separately labelled requests. United directs disruption compensation and expenses to Customer Care, while unused-ticket refunds use its refund channel.

Example: Frankfurt to Denver

United cancels a covered Frankfurt-Denver departure and offers its own flight two days later. A same-day Lufthansa-operated itinerary via Munich has seats in a comparable cabin and reaches Denver much earlier. The passenger identifies it, asks United to reroute and saves the refusal. If the passenger then buys a proportionate replacement, that record is materially stronger than a receipt alone.

The cancellation may also qualify for fixed EU261 compensation if notice was late and United cannot prove extraordinary circumstances. Replacement cost and fixed compensation answer different losses.

FAQ

Must United rebook me on any Star Alliance flight I choose?

No. The legal test is reasonable rerouting at the earliest opportunity under comparable conditions, not an unrestricted choice of any alliance seat.

Can I buy a Lufthansa ticket and claim it from United?

Potentially, if the original cancellation was covered, United failed to provide proper rerouting and the replacement was reasonable. Document the request and refusal first where possible.

Does accepting a partner flight remove fixed compensation?

No. Rerouting and fixed compensation are separate, although replacement timing can affect the compensation amount.

What if the partner flight is in a lower cabin?

Preserve the cabin evidence. An involuntary downgrade can support a separate percentage reimbursement for the affected sector.

Can I demand partner rerouting after a US-origin United cancellation?

Not usually under EU261 or UK261. US refund rights may apply if you reject United's alternative, but they are not the same rerouting regime.
