United Airlines missed connection: compensation and rerouting

A missed United connection can qualify for EU261 or UK261 when all sectors form one booking that begins in Europe or the UK and the passenger reaches the final destination at least three hours late. A self-transfer or a new journey beginning in the United States does not gain fixed European compensation merely because United sold or operated part of the travel.

Check the complete United itinerary using its first departure and last ticketed airport. Do not test only the delayed feeder or the hub where the connection was missed.

One booking is the dividing line

Booking structureTypical legal position
Dublin-Newark-Denver on one United ticketFinal delay measured in Denver; EU261 can apply
Heathrow-Chicago-Boise on one ticketFinal delay measured in Boise; UK261 can apply
Frankfurt-Newark on one ticket plus separate Newark-Denver ticketEU-protected journey usually ends at Newark
Denver-Newark-Dublin operated by UnitedJourney starts in US; EU261 normally unavailable
EU-origin one booking with problem on domestic US sectorCan remain covered under C-561/20

Having the same app account or travelling on the same day does not combine contracts. The evidence is the e-ticket, coupon sequence and through final destination.

Final arrival matters more than hub delay

A 90-minute delay into Newark may look too short for compensation. If it causes a protected missed connection and United's rerouting reaches the final city five hours late, the five-hour final result controls. Conversely, a feeder can depart three hours late yet recover enough that final arrival is below the threshold.

Arrival is generally when at least one door opens and passengers may leave at the final destination. Immigration and baggage collection after that point do not extend the legal arrival clock.

Keep the original final destination visible. A reissued boarding pass can show only the replacement sector and conceal the initial contract.

Immigration and baggage recheck do not automatically break one ticket

Passengers entering the United States commonly clear immigration and customs at the first US airport, collect checked baggage and recheck it for the onward flight. These procedural steps do not by themselves turn one ticket into a self-transfer.

The passenger must still act reasonably: proceed promptly, follow instructions and possess valid documents. If United argues that the missed flight resulted only from the traveller's conduct, preserve immigration queue evidence, inbound gate time, baggage-delivery time and the boarding cutoff.

A connection sold by United as one itinerary supports rerouting protection, but it is not an unconditional promise that every immigration delay is airline fault. Fixed compensation still requires a qualifying cause attributable under the regime.

C-561/20 and a disruption inside the US

The Court of Justice considered passengers travelling Brussels-Newark-San Jose on one reservation. United operated both sectors; the significant delay occurred on the later US leg. The Court confirmed that the connected journey fell within EU261 because it began in the EU and formed one whole.

This directly answers a frequent refusal: "The delayed segment was domestic." Segment geography alone is not decisive when the protected journey began in Europe. Read the United C-561/20 guide for the judgment's exact boundaries.

Rerouting after the missed connection

Ask United to protect the booking and reroute to the final destination at the earliest opportunity under comparable conditions. Check sensible United and Star Alliance options. If an alternative airport is proposed, clarify onward transport.

Do not accept a refund casually when the journey still matters. Reimbursement and rerouting are alternatives for the same unused transport. Accepting a new flight does not automatically settle fixed compensation.

If United refuses an available reasonable option, record the flight, seats, fare, agent response and urgency before self-booking. A replacement purchased without giving United a fair opportunity can be disputed.

Care during the new wait

On a covered EU or UK journey, reasonable meals, communication, hotel and airport-hotel transport depend on the waiting period. They remain relevant during extraordinary circumstances. Ask United first and keep itemised receipts if it supplies nothing.

US customer-service commitments can also matter at the hub, but they are not a substitute for statutory care on a covered itinerary. Present costs separately from the fixed amount.

When fixed compensation is likely

A viable missed-connection claim generally has:

  1. one directly connecting booking;
  2. initial departure in EU/EEA/Switzerland or UK;
  3. final arrival at least three hours late;
  4. timely presentation with valid documents;
  5. no proven extraordinary circumstance that reasonable measures could not overcome.

Routine technical or operational problems can support payment. Severe weather, ATC restrictions or airport closure may defeat the fixed sum while leaving care and rerouting intact.

Separate tickets and protected losses

With separate tickets, United usually owes obligations to the destination of its own contract. The cost of a missed independent flight is not automatically an EU261 rerouting expense. Travel insurance, card protection or a contractual connection product may be relevant.

Do not conceal separate booking references. Explain them and pursue any recoverable consequential loss under the correct framework. A misleading one-ticket claim can undermine a valid refund or insurance request.

Evidence checklist at the hub

  • complete e-ticket before reissue;
  • boarding passes for all original and replacement sectors;
  • operated-by entries;
  • inbound door-opening time;
  • boarding cutoff and gate-change notices;
  • immigration, security and baggage timestamps;
  • rebooking offers and actual final arrival;
  • United's stated cause;
  • receipts for necessary care.

Submit the final-destination chronology through Customer Care. If United isolates the US sector, attach the complete booking and C-561/20.

Example: Amsterdam-Houston-San Antonio

United sells and operates one ticket. A routine mechanical delay from Amsterdam leaves too little time in Houston, and United reroutes the passenger to arrive in San Antonio five hours late. EU261 can cover the whole journey and the long-distance amount can reach EUR 600.

On San Antonio-Houston-Amsterdam a week later, the return starts in the US. United's operation normally leaves that journey outside EU261 fixed compensation, although refund, baggage and customer-service remedies may remain.

FAQ

Does United compensate a missed connection?

It can when one covered booking leads to final arrival at least three hours late and United cannot prove a valid extraordinary-circumstances defence.

Does immigration make the tickets separate?

No. US entry, customs and baggage recheck do not change a single e-ticket into separate contracts.

What if only the domestic US flight was delayed?

EU261 can still apply when that flight was part of one connected journey beginning in the EU, as C-561/20 confirms.

What if I booked the onward flight separately?

The first protected journey usually ends at its own destination. The missed self-transfer may require insurance or contractual analysis rather than EU261 rerouting.

Can I accept United's rebooking and still claim?

Yes. Rerouting does not automatically remove fixed compensation, though actual final arrival affects eligibility and amount.
