United Airlines refund, voucher or travel credit: which should you choose?

Choose a cash refund when United cancels or significantly changes eligible travel and you no longer want to fly; choose rerouting when the trip still matters. A United travel credit is a voluntary commercial option. Accepting it can end the refund choice, so check value, expiry, eligible traveller and settlement wording before agreeing.

Check your case in the form

Enter your route, date and type of disruption. We will check whether your case qualifies for a claim under EU 261/2004 or UK261.

What happened to your flight?

Claim up to €600 for a delayed or cancelled flight.

Choose the situation that applies to your flight:

Ticket reimbursement is not fixed compensation. On a covered EU or UK departure, you may still have a separate EUR 250-600 or GBP 220-520 claim after choosing refund or rerouting.

Compare the options

Cash reimbursementTrip no longer serves its purposeUsually ends rerouting for the same unused sectors

Later reroutingSame trip at a later convenient dateSubject to seat availability

Do not let an app turn an involuntary cancellation into a voluntary passenger cancellation. Save United's notice before making a choice.

EU261 and UK261 cash rights

After a covered cancellation, United should offer reimbursement or rerouting. Cash reimbursement should not be replaced by a voucher without the passenger's free and informed agreement. A preselected credit button does not erase the cash option.

If part of a connected journey has already been flown and continuation no longer serves the original plan, reimbursement can extend to relevant used travel and a return flight to the first point of departure. Explain why the trip lost its purpose and keep the one-booking itinerary.

For a delay of at least five hours at departure, a covered passenger may abandon the journey and seek reimbursement under the regulation. That is different from waiting, flying and later requesting fixed compensation for final delay.

US DOT automatic refunds

DOT requires a prompt automatic refund for a flight to, from or within the United States when the airline cancels or makes a defined significant change and the passenger does not accept the changed flight, rebooking, travel credit, voucher or alternative compensation.

Current significant changes include large time shifts, changed origin or destination airport, more connections, involuntary downgrade and certain accessibility impacts. The refund goes to the original payment method. Current federal timing is seven business days for credit-card payments and 20 calendar days for other forms.

DOT refund is not a routine lump-sum award for inconvenience. A United-operated Houston-Frankfurt cancellation can generate a ticket refund if travel is rejected, but normally no EU261 compensation because the journey begins in the US on a non-EU carrier.

What to check in a United credit

United uses more than one type of credit and terms can change. Record the exact product offered rather than relying on the generic word "voucher." Check:

  • face value and currency;
  • booking and travel deadline;
  • named traveller and transfer rules;
  • eligible flights and partners;
  • whether multiple credits can be combined;
  • treatment of a cheaper new ticket;
  • refundability of the replacement booking;
  • language releasing statutory or expense claims.

A bonus value can make a credit commercially attractive. Compare it with the certainty and flexibility of cash. Do not assume a higher nominal amount is better if it expires before realistic travel.

Refund scope and ancillary fees

List every unused sector. Also identify separately paid baggage, seat, lounge, Wi-Fi or upgrade services that were not provided. DOT has automatic refund rules for unprovided ancillary services and significantly delayed checked-bag fees, but the process and responsible entity can differ from airfare.

If a replacement flight was used, a full refund of that transported ticket is generally not due. A downgrade difference, unprovided service fee, care expense or fixed compensation may still be claimed.

Award tickets require restoration of miles and eligible taxes rather than pretending the whole booking had a cash fare. Preserve the mileage debit and redeposit record.

Booking through an OTA

For US refund rules, inspect the card statement. The airline or ticket agent shown as merchant of record is responsible for the airfare refund. This does not redirect EU261 or UK261 fixed compensation away from the operating carrier.

Do not accept endless referrals. Send the operating-airline claim to United and the ticket-price refund to the merchant of record, attaching the evidence that shows each role. The United OTA guide explains the split.

When United cancelled the flight, use the United cancellation guide to separate the refund or rerouting choice from any additional fixed compensation.

Preserve compensation separately

A covered United cancellation from Frankfurt or Heathrow can produce two independent amounts:

  1. reimbursement of unused ticket because the passenger abandons travel;
  2. fixed compensation because notice was late and no exception is proved.

Add reasonable care expenses where relevant. State explicitly that accepting reimbursement is not intended to settle the distinct statutory claim unless the settlement clearly and lawfully covers it.

A safe decision sequence

  1. Save the original ticket and United's disruption notice.
  2. Confirm operating carrier and route scope.
  3. Decide whether the trip still has value.
  4. Compare cash, earliest rerouting and credit terms.
  5. Confirm the selected option in writing.
  6. Request each separate amount through the correct channel.
  7. Keep the response and payment trace.

United's refund page handles unused travel and services. It directs disruption compensation and delayed/cancelled-flight expenses to Customer Care.

Example: Frankfurt-Newark cancellation

United cancels Frankfurt-Newark one day before departure. The passenger abandons the trip and chooses cash reimbursement, not a credit. EU261 can also support EUR 600 if United cannot prove extraordinary circumstances or another compensation exception. The refund restores ticket value; EUR 600 addresses inconvenience.

For Newark-Frankfurt operated by United, DOT can require cash refund if the passenger rejects rebooking. EU261 fixed compensation normally does not apply to that direction.

FAQ

Must I accept a United travel credit?

No when cash reimbursement is due. A credit should be a voluntary choice after its restrictions are disclosed.

Does a refund remove EU261 compensation?

Not automatically. Ticket reimbursement and fixed compensation address different rights and can coexist.

Can I receive a full refund after using United's replacement flight?

Normally no for the transported ticket. Other claims such as fixed compensation, downgrade or care expenses may remain.

Who refunds an OTA booking in the US?

The merchant of record shown for the airfare transaction is responsible under DOT's refund framework.

Is a US refund the same as EUR 600 compensation?

No. DOT refund returns money for travel rejected after cancellation or significant change; it is not the European fixed award.
