United Airlines cancelled flight: refund, rerouting and compensation
When United cancels a covered flight from the EU, EEA, Switzerland or the UK, the passenger chooses reimbursement or rerouting and may also receive fixed compensation if notice was late and United cannot prove an exception. When a United-operated journey begins in the United States, DOT refund rights can still apply, but EU261 or UK261 fixed cancellation compensation normally does not.

Choose the situation that applies to your flight:
Check a cancelled United flight before accepting a credit. The best option depends on whether the trip still has value, how quickly United can reroute it and whether the cancellation meets the separate compensation test.
Three remedies that should not be merged
| Remedy | What it addresses | Main choice or test |
|---|---|---|
| Reimbursement | Travel no longer taken | Passenger rejects continuation |
| Rerouting | Reaching the booked destination | Earliest comparable transport or a later convenient date |
| Fixed compensation | Inconvenience from a qualifying cancellation | Scope, notice, replacement timing and cause |
Choosing reimbursement generally ends the right to demand rerouting for the same unused travel. It does not automatically extinguish fixed compensation that had already arisen.
First confirm that European or UK rules cover the cancellation
A United-operated Dublin-Newark cancellation can fall under EU261, while Heathrow-Chicago can fall under UK261. United's nationality is irrelevant on these departures. A Houston-Frankfurt or Newark-London cancellation operated by United begins outside the protected territory and usually has no fixed EU or UK award.
Codeshare operation can reverse the inbound answer. A UA-numbered Newark-Frankfurt flight operated by Lufthansa is assessed as a Lufthansa operation. Read the e-ticket and original boarding information instead of relying on the app's largest logo.
For a multi-sector itinerary, identify the initial departure and final destination of the directly connecting booking. A feeder cancellation inside the US can still affect a continuous trip that began in the EU, but an unrelated ticket cannot borrow that scope.
The 14-day notice test
Fixed cancellation compensation is generally possible when notice reached the passenger fewer than 14 days before scheduled departure. The sender must prove when notice was communicated. An internal cancellation date is not the same as delivery to the passenger.
Replacement timing can remove the fixed amount in defined windows:
- with seven to 14 days' notice, a compliant alternative must leave no more than two hours earlier and arrive less than four hours later;
- with fewer than seven days' notice, the alternative must leave no more than one hour earlier and arrive less than two hours later.
These windows concern compensation. The passenger still has cancellation choices and care rights. Preserve the first United email, text, app notification or agent message, including timestamp and proposed itinerary.
Reimbursement under EU261 or UK261
If travel no longer serves its purpose, reimbursement can cover unused sectors. When part of a connected trip has already been flown and continuation has become pointless in relation to the original plan, the protected regime can also require reimbursement of the used part and a return flight to the first point of departure at the earliest opportunity.
Do not cancel voluntarily in the app before preserving United's cancellation. A passenger-initiated cancellation can be treated under fare conditions rather than involuntary-disruption rights.
Cash reimbursement should not be replaced by a voucher without free and informed agreement. If United offers a travel credit, record its expiry, transfer rules, eligible travellers and whether acceptance contains settlement language.
Rerouting when the trip still matters
The protected choice is not limited to the next United flight several days later. Rerouting should be at the earliest opportunity under comparable transport conditions, taking available alternatives into account. Ask the airport or digital agent to check United and realistic Star Alliance options.
If United refuses a reasonable same-day route, document the request, available seats, quoted fare and refusal before buying replacement travel. Self-booking without giving the airline a fair opportunity can weaken reimbursement. Safety, visa, airport-transfer and baggage constraints remain relevant.
The United Star Alliance rerouting guide provides a record-building sequence for partner options.
When fixed compensation is payable
After route and notice tests, United can avoid the fixed amount by proving extraordinary circumstances and reasonable measures. Severe weather, airspace closure, airport security or an external ATC restriction may qualify. A routine mechanical problem or normal crew and aircraft planning does not become extraordinary merely because United calls it operational.
Current bands reach EUR 600 on many eligible EU-US journeys and GBP 520 on eligible UK-US journeys. Rerouting arrival within the statutory window can reduce the amount. The payment is generally calculated for each qualifying passenger, including a child travelling on a paid ticket.
What DOT provides on a US-origin cancellation
US rules generally require an automatic refund when an airline cancels a flight and the passenger rejects rebooking, travel credit or other alternative compensation. Prompt means seven business days for credit-card purchases and 20 calendar days for other payment methods under the DOT framework.
That remedy is not a routine fixed cancellation award. A United-operated Denver-London cancellation can generate a refund when the traveller does not go, yet normally no GBP 520 because United is neither a UK nor EU carrier and the journey began in the US.
Passengers who accept and use replacement transport are not simultaneously entitled to a full refund of the used ticket. They may still pursue baggage, ancillary-fee or contractual remedies supported by the facts.
Care while waiting for rerouting
On a covered European or UK cancellation, reasonable meals, communications, hotel and transfers can be due while the passenger waits, even when extraordinary circumstances caused the event. Ask United to provide assistance first. If none is offered, keep itemised receipts and choose proportionate options.
Care normally ends when the passenger elects reimbursement and abandons travel rather than waiting for rerouting. Costs after making a different choice need a clear causal and legal basis.
Cancellation evidence checklist
- complete ticket and original itinerary;
- operated-by entry for every affected sector;
- first notice with timestamp;
- all replacement offers and actual arrival;
- stated cancellation reason and any later explanation;
- chat transcripts showing requests for cash or rerouting;
- itemised care and replacement-travel receipts;
- passenger list and proof of authority for a group claim.
Submit fixed compensation and expenses as separately labelled sums. For the correct portal, use the United form and contact guide.
Example: Heathrow to Denver
United cancels a Heathrow-Denver departure two days before travel because of an ordinary aircraft availability problem. It offers a replacement arriving the next evening. The passenger takes the rerouting. UK261 can still support GBP 520, subject to United's evidence, because accepting transport does not itself settle fixed compensation. Reasonable care during the wait is separate.
If the same facts occur Denver-Heathrow on a United-operated return, DOT reimbursement is available if the passenger rejects travel. UK261 fixed compensation normally is not, because the return begins in the US and United is not a covered inbound carrier.
FAQ
Does United have to refund a cancelled flight?
Yes when the passenger rejects the replacement and the applicable EU, UK or US refund rules cover the booking. A used replacement generally removes the full-ticket refund option.
Can I receive compensation after accepting rerouting?
Yes. Rerouting and fixed compensation are separate, although the replacement arrival time can affect the amount.
Does the 14-day rule apply to every United cancellation?
It is part of the EU261 and UK261 fixed-compensation analysis. It does not create the same fixed award for an uncovered US-origin United journey.
Must I accept a United travel credit?
No when cash reimbursement is legally due. A credit should be a voluntary choice made after its restrictions and settlement terms are disclosed.
Is compensation due when weather cancels the flight?
Usually not if United proves extraordinary weather caused the cancellation and reasonable measures could not avoid it. Rerouting, reimbursement and care can remain due.
