United MileagePlus award ticket and upgrade claims
A MileagePlus award ticket can qualify for EU261 or UK261 fixed compensation when the journey is territorially covered. Regulation 261 expressly includes tickets issued under frequent-flyer programmes or commercial programmes. Miles do not reduce the EUR 250-600 or GBP 220-520 fixed amount, but ticket refund and upgrade restoration must be calculated in the currencies actually used.

Check your case in the form
Enter your route, date and type of disruption. We will check whether your case qualifies for a claim under EU 261/2004 or UK261.
What happened to your flight?
Claim up to €600 for a delayed or cancelled flight.
Choose the situation that applies to your flight:
Keep three ledgers: statutory cash compensation, miles and taxes from the award ticket, and any PlusPoints, miles or cash used for an upgrade.
What is claimed in cash and what is restored?
| Booking element | Typical remedy after qualifying disruption |
|---|---|
| EU261/UK261 fixed compensation | Statutory cash amount per eligible passenger |
| Unused award ticket | Mileage redeposit plus eligible taxes/fees |
| Cash copay or surcharge | Refund according to unused travel and applicable rules |
| Confirmed PlusPoints/mileage upgrade lost | Restoration or specific upgrade remedy |
| Paid upgrade lost | Refund of paid service; downgrade rules may also apply |
| Care expenses | Actual reasonable receipts |
Do not convert miles into an arbitrary cash rate inside the fixed claim. The statutory payment is not based on ticket price.
Award tickets are not excluded merely because cash fare was zero
EU261 excludes passengers travelling free or at a reduced fare not directly or indirectly available to the public. It then expressly preserves tickets issued under a frequent-flyer programme or other commercial programme.
That means a public MileagePlus redemption is not automatically excluded. The usual tests still apply: confirmed reservation, timely presentation, territorial scope, operating carrier, disruption threshold and cause.
A discretionary employee pass, industry concession or truly private free ticket requires separate analysis. Do not treat it as identical to a normal member redemption.
Direction still controls United coverage
An award booking does not expand territorial scope. United-operated Dublin-Newark, Frankfurt-Chicago and Heathrow-Washington departures can enter EU261 or UK261. United-operated US-Europe returns normally do not because United is a non-European carrier departing outside the protected territory.
If a UA-marketed award sector is operated by Lufthansa or another eligible European airline, inbound coverage may change. Save the original operated-by entry before rebooking.
For one booking from Europe through a US hub, final-destination rules can cover later disruption. The fact that the ticket was issued with MileagePlus miles does not break the continuous journey.
Cancellation and award refund
When United cancels covered travel and the passenger abandons the trip, ask for redeposit of miles and refund of eligible taxes and fees. Record balances before and after. If a redeposit fee appears, challenge it as an involuntary cancellation rather than voluntary award cancellation.
If travel remains useful, ask for involuntary rerouting. Do not cancel the award in the app before United's disruption is preserved, because award availability can vanish and the booking may be coded as passenger choice.
DOT refund rules also cover eligible award transactions for flights to, from or within the United States, with refund to the original forms used when the passenger rejects a cancellation or significant change.
PlusPoints and mileage upgrades
Save whether the upgrade was waitlisted or confirmed. A confirmed cabin entitlement lost through involuntary rebooking is stronger than an uncleared request. Ask United to return PlusPoints or miles and any copay.
For a covered cabin downgrade, EU261 or UK261 can require 30%, 50% or 75% reimbursement of the price attributable to the downgraded flight. Valuation is less mechanical where the higher cabin came only from an upgrade instrument. Request United's calculation and restoration without promising one universal cash value.
If United both restores PlusPoints and pays a statutory downgrade amount, explain why they address different elements. Avoid duplicate recovery of the same cash upgrade charge.
The Polaris and Premium Plus downgrade guide sets out the sector calculation.
Partner awards and operating carrier
MileagePlus can issue travel on partners. The programme that issued miles is not automatically the airline liable under passenger-rights law. Identify who performed or intended to perform the disrupted flight.
Send fixed compensation to that operator. Send mileage redeposit and award-ticket servicing to the programme or ticket issuer. One party may coordinate both, but state each request separately.
If a partner cancels and United says only the partner can restore miles, ask United as issuer to state how the award currency will be returned. If the partner rejects compensation, attach the operated-by evidence.
Family award bookings
Fixed compensation is calculated per eligible passenger, not per MileagePlus account. One member may have redeemed miles for several travellers. Keep each e-ticket number and obtain authority where an adult claims for another adult.
Shared miles can be returned to the original account while statutory cash belongs to each passenger. Do not instruct United to pay all adult claims to one person without consent.
Infant travel requires special care. Confirm whether an infant had a ticket, paid taxes or travelled under a free private arrangement before assuming a fixed amount.
Evidence checklist
- original award receipt and e-ticket;
- mileage debit and tax payment;
- operated-by details for every sector;
- PlusPoints, miles or cash upgrade request;
- confirmation or waitlist status;
- cancellation/delay and final arrival evidence;
- before/after mileage and instrument balance;
- reissued cabin and boarding pass;
- separate calculation for statutory cash and programme restoration.
Use United's refund route for eligible ticket and service refunds and Customer Care for disruption compensation and expenses. The how-to-claim guide provides the core evidence sequence.
Example: award flight from Frankfurt
A passenger redeems MileagePlus miles for United-operated Frankfurt-Newark and arrives five hours late because of an ordinary technical fault. EU261 can support EUR 600 despite the award ticket. The passenger does not need to assign a cash price to the miles for that fixed claim.
If United cancels and the passenger does not travel, mileage redeposit and tax refund are additional. On United-operated Newark-Frankfurt, the award status remains irrelevant to the fact that EU261 normally does not cover that direction.
FAQ
Do MileagePlus award tickets qualify for EU261?
Yes when the normal coverage tests are met; frequent-flyer programme tickets are expressly included.
Is fixed compensation paid in miles?
The statutory amount is a monetary payment. A voucher or miles substitute requires the passenger's informed agreement where cash is due.
Are PlusPoints automatically returned after disruption?
Check the account and request restoration with proof of the original confirmed upgrade. Do not assume the automated record is complete.
Can I claim EUR 600 and receive my miles back?
Yes when cancellation/refund and fixed-compensation conditions are independently met. They address different rights.
Who handles a partner award claim?
The operating carrier handles statutory compensation; United or the issuing programme handles mileage and ticket servicing.
