Qatar Airways Europe to India or Asia: EUR 600 compensation
A Qatar Airways journey from the EU, EEA or Switzerland through Doha to India or another Asian destination can qualify for EU261 compensation when it is one continuous booking and final arrival is sufficiently late. Because these journeys exceed 3,500 km, the starting amount is usually EUR 600 per eligible passenger for arrival four hours or more late, or EUR 300 when the long-journey arrival delay is between three and four hours. The reverse Qatar-operated journey from Asia to Europe normally is not EU261-covered because Qatar Airways is not an EU carrier.

Direction decides whether EU261 starts
| One-way journey operated by Qatar Airways | Normal EU261 position |
|---|---|
| Paris-Doha-Delhi on one ticket | Covered from EU origin |
| Frankfurt-Doha-Bangkok on one ticket | Covered from EU origin |
| Amsterdam-Doha-Singapore on one ticket | Covered from EU origin |
| Delhi-Doha-Paris | Normally not covered |
| Bangkok-Doha-Frankfurt | Normally not covered |
| Doha-Europe standalone flight | Normally not covered |
Passenger nationality, residence and ticket currency do not reverse this direction test. EU261 applies to a non-EU airline when its journey departs from covered European territory; it ordinarily does not apply to that airline's inbound flight from a third country.
Switzerland is included through the applicable aviation arrangements, and EEA departures are protected under the corresponding framework. Preserve the exact first airport rather than writing only "Europe."
One booking carries the final destination through Doha
EU passenger-rights case law supports treating directly connecting flights booked as a single unit as a whole for relevant final-destination analysis, even where a later sector operates outside the EU. The ticket should show one reservation and the Asian endpoint.
If the Europe-Doha delay causes a missed onward flight, measure arrival when the passenger actually reaches Delhi, Mumbai, Bangkok, Singapore or the other ticketed endpoint. Do not stop the clock at Doha.
Keep all coupons, the original connection, new boarding passes and final arrival evidence. A reissued itinerary must not erase the European origin.
The missed-connection guide explains the through-ticket test in more detail.
Separate tickets can break the high-value claim
Two tickets purchased in one checkout do not necessarily form one protected journey. If the first ticket ends in Doha and the second begins there, EU261 may assess only the first contract's destination.
Compare ticket numbers, PNRs, fare documents, baggage through-check and check-in instructions. An OTA self-transfer guarantee is a commercial promise, not automatic EU261 final-destination protection.
For example, Paris-Doha arrives two hours late and the passenger misses a separate Doha-Kochi ticket, reaching India one day later. The first ticket may have no three-hour arrival delay at its own destination even though the holiday is badly disrupted.
The separate-ticket guide helps avoid overstating this case.
EUR 600 or EUR 300?
These itineraries normally belong to the long-distance category over 3,500 km. For a qualifying one-ticket journey:
| Final arrival delay | Starting fixed amount per passenger |
|---|---|
| Less than 3 hours | Usually no delay compensation |
| 3 hours to under 4 hours | EUR 300 can apply after 50% reduction |
| 4 hours or more | EUR 600 |
The amount is not the ticket price and is calculated per eligible passenger. A family of four can have a starting total of EUR 2,400 when each arrives at least four hours late and the cause qualifies.
Measure arrival when at least one aircraft door opens and passengers are permitted to leave, using the legally relevant standard. Convert local times carefully across time zones and retain the scheduled and actual arrival records.
The Qatar Airways amount guide covers reduction and distance evidence.
Cause still matters
Three or four hours late is not enough by itself. Qatar Airways can avoid fixed compensation if it proves extraordinary circumstances and all reasonable measures. Weather, air traffic control, airport closure, security restrictions and inaccessible airspace can qualify depending on the actual event.
Routine technical problems, crew planning and many ordinary operational issues generally do not become extraordinary simply because the journey is long. Ask for the event, time, affected flight and measures taken rather than accepting "operational reasons."
A Doha connection may be missed because of the European departure, the onward aircraft or network recovery. Obtain the cause for the decisive disruption and compare unaffected flights where useful.
Care, rerouting and refund do not vanish automatically when the extraordinary-circumstances defence succeeds.
Operating carrier and partner sectors
A QR flight number does not always mean Qatar Airways operated. Finnair, British Airways, Iberia or another partner may supply the aircraft and crew. Operator identity can change the respondent and sometimes inbound scope.
If Qatar Airways operates the protected European departure and onward Qatar sector on one ticket, submit to Qatar Airways. If an EU carrier operates an inbound sector from Asia, its carrier status may require a separate analysis even though Qatar Airways marketed it.
Keep the "operated by" wording from the e-ticket and boarding passes. The codeshare guide provides a role table.
Care and rerouting in Doha
When a protected one-ticket journey breaks in Doha, ask Qatar Airways for rerouting to the Asian final destination at the earliest opportunity. Request meals, hotel and transport if waiting makes them necessary.
Care can remain due even if airspace or weather defeats fixed compensation. Preserve vouchers and receipts. Planned complimentary transit accommodation is a different fare product and does not replace disruption care.
If Qatar Airways offers travel only much later, ask it to search suitable partner services. Do not buy an expensive replacement without first documenting the request, refusal and real-time availability.
Cancellation before departure
For a covered cancellation, compensation can depend on notice timing and the replacement schedule. The passenger also chooses reimbursement or rerouting independently of the fixed amount.
If travel to Asia still matters, do not click a refund merely to see its value. Elect earliest rerouting in writing and ask Qatar Airways to preserve every sector. If the trip has lost its purpose, request reimbursement under the applicable rules.
An advance schedule change that brings departure forward by more than one hour can be treated as cancellation under EU case law. Keep the first notification timestamp.
Evidence and claim presentation
Submit one chronology with:
- complete original ticket from Europe to Asian final destination;
- operator on every flight;
- original and replacement boarding passes;
- scheduled and actual final arrival;
- cancellation notice or cause explanation;
- care and rerouting requests;
- PNR and ticket numbers;
- expenses in a separate receipt schedule.
State the directional basis in the first paragraph: "Qatar Airways-operated journey departed [covered airport] on one booking to [final destination]." Then calculate EUR 300 or EUR 600 by final arrival.
Use the claim-form guide to preserve a case number and attachments.
Examples
Madrid-Doha-Delhi arrives 5 hours late: one Qatar Airways ticket begins in the EU. The starting fixed claim is EUR 600 per passenger, subject to cause.
Amsterdam-Doha-Bangkok arrives 3 hours 25 minutes late: the long-journey reduction can produce EUR 300 rather than EUR 600.
Mumbai-Doha-Paris arrives 6 hours late: Qatar Airways begins outside Europe and is not an EU carrier. EU261 normally does not pay the fixed amount.
Paris-Doha plus separate Doha-Colombo ticket: assess arrival at Doha for the first contract unless the documents establish one through booking.
FAQ
Can Qatar Airways pay EUR 600 from Europe to India?
Yes when a covered one-ticket journey arrives at its Indian final destination at least four hours late and no valid extraordinary defence applies.
What if arrival is between three and four hours late?
The long-distance amount can be reduced by 50% to EUR 300.
Is India-to-Europe covered on Qatar Airways?
Normally not under EU261 because Qatar Airways is a non-EU carrier and the journey departs outside the EU.
Does a missed Doha connection count at final destination?
Yes when all flights form one continuous protected booking; preserve the original European origin and Asian endpoint.
Does an OTA self-transfer create one EU261 journey?
Not automatically. Separate ticket numbers and contracts can limit the protected destination to Doha.
