Qatar Airways damaged baggage claim and seven-day deadline
Inspect Qatar Airways checked baggage at the reclaim belt and report damage before leaving the airport whenever possible. For international carriage under the Montreal Convention, send a written complaint no later than seven days after receiving the bag. The current combined baggage liability ceiling is 1,519 Special Drawing Rights per passenger, but payment depends on proved damage, repair cost, value and exclusions rather than the maximum being automatic.

Check your case in the form
Enter your route, date and type of disruption. We will check whether your case qualifies for a claim under EU 261/2004 or UK261.
What happened to your flight?
Claim up to €600 for a delayed or cancelled flight.
Choose the situation that applies to your flight:
Do not repair or discard the suitcase until Qatar Airways has had a reasonable opportunity to inspect it, unless urgent safety needs require action.
Inspect and document immediately
Check the shell, fabric, frame, wheels, handles, zips, locks and contents in the baggage area. Take wide photographs and close-ups with the bag tag visible. Record the carousel and arrival time.
Go to the baggage-service desk and request a damage report or Property Irregularity Report. Save the reference and the name of the handling carrier. If staff describe the damage as ordinary wear, ask for that conclusion in writing and photograph the disputed feature.
Keep:
- complete itinerary and boarding pass;
- baggage tag and any checked-bag fee;
- airport damage report and file number;
- images before and after travel;
- suitcase receipt or model details;
- repair estimate or non-repairable statement;
- proof and photographs of damaged contents;
- every Qatar Airways response.
Damage, wear or packing problem?
| Condition | Likely issue |
|---|---|
| Wheel torn from housing | Physical handling damage |
| Cracked hard shell or bent frame | Physical damage requiring assessment |
| Torn fabric exposing contents | Physical damage |
| Light scuffs and dirt | Often ordinary wear |
| Split caused by obvious overpacking | Airline may dispute liability |
| Fragile item packed without protection | Exclusion or contributory issue possible |
| Item missing from opened bag | Pilferage claim and inventory |
The classification depends on evidence. A full-bag image helps show age and condition; close-ups show the failure. Disclose earlier marks honestly so the new damage remains credible.
The seven-day written complaint
The Montreal Convention requires a written complaint for damage to checked baggage within seven days from receipt. Immediate airport reporting is safest, but the later written claim should still state the damage, amount and evidence clearly.
A verbal exchange at the belt may not satisfy a written deadline. Submit through Qatar Airways' designated baggage process and retain a timestamped copy. If the online system fails, preserve screenshots and send Feedback & Concerns with the baggage file reference before the period expires.
For a bag that was first delayed and then delivered damaged, record the delivery date and report the physical damage immediately. The delay complaint has its own 21-day period after delivery.
Court proceedings under the Convention are generally subject to a two-year extinguishment period. That does not extend the seven-day written notice.
Repair, replacement or monetary settlement
Qatar Airways may investigate repair, comparable replacement or a cash settlement. The correct outcome depends on repair feasibility, age, previous condition, original price and current value.
Obtain a written repair estimate from a suitable provider. If repair is impossible or unsafe, ask the provider to state why. Do not buy a premium replacement first and assume the full retail price will be reimbursed.
A used suitcase is normally worth less than a new one. Provide purchase evidence and a comparable product rather than an unrelated luxury model. Ask Qatar Airways to explain depreciation and any proposed replacement specification.
If an emergency repair is necessary to continue travel, photograph before work, retain damaged parts where possible and keep the itemised invoice.
Damaged contents and pilferage
List each damaged or missing item separately. Include description, age, original price, current value, photograph and purchase evidence. Explain how the bag impact caused the contents damage.
Qatar Airways' conditions restrict or discourage certain valuables, fragile goods, electronics, documents, medicines and other unsuitable items in checked baggage. An exclusion can affect recovery. Check the rules that applied on the travel date.
For suspected theft, preserve signs of interference and consider an airport police report, but still file the airline baggage complaint. A police report does not replace the seven-day written notice.
Never dispose of damaged contents until inspection is resolved unless they are unsafe or perishable; photograph the reason for disposal.
The 1,519 SDR ceiling
The Montreal Convention baggage limit increased to 1,519 SDR per passenger on 28 December 2024. SDR changes value against national currencies. The ceiling generally combines loss, damage, destruction and delay within the same baggage carriage.
It is not EUR 1,519 and not 1,519 SDR per bag. Two damaged suitcases checked by one passenger do not automatically double the maximum. Several passengers should preserve tickets and bag tags showing whose baggage the carrier accepted.
The claimant proves actual loss below the ceiling. A special declaration of interest made at check-in with any supplementary payment can change the maximum; keep its receipt.
Mobility equipment and essential devices
A damaged wheelchair, scooter or other mobility aid can create urgent safety and accessibility needs beyond an ordinary suitcase repair. Tell airport staff immediately, request an appropriate temporary solution and document whether the device remains usable.
Record make, model, serial number, battery, pre-flight condition and handling instructions. Photograph it before check-in and on return. Ask a qualified repairer to assess safety.
Applicable disability law can add protections depending on route and country. Do not let the baggage desk close the matter with a generic suitcase allowance when the passenger cannot move independently.
Codeshare and successive carriage
Report at the final airport to the baggage service handling the arriving journey. Keep tags for every segment and identify actual operators. The Montreal Convention contains rules for successive carriers, while the airport file allows them to trace handling.
If Qatar Airways and a partner transported the bag, the QR marketing code does not prove where damage occurred. Make the claim promptly rather than waiting for carriers to agree privately.
On separate tickets, state where the bag was collected and rechecked. That handover can affect which carriage contained the damage.
Separate the baggage and flight files
Damaged baggage does not itself generate EUR 600 or GBP 520. EU261 and UK261 concern qualifying flight disruption; Montreal handles the physical bag.
A Qatar Airways-operated London-Doha flight can produce a UK261 delay claim and a distinct damaged-bag claim. A Doha-London flight normally lacks UK261 fixed compensation because Qatar Airways departs outside the UK, yet Convention baggage liability can still apply.
Use the delayed and lost baggage guide if the bag failed to arrive. The Qatar Airways compensation guide covers only the flight event.
Claim schedule
Attach the airport report, photographs, baggage tag, ticket, purchase proof and repair evidence. Use a table:
| Item | Age and prior condition | Original price | Claimed repair or current value | Evidence |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Suitcase | 18 months, good | EUR 220 | EUR 85 repair | Receipt, photos, estimate |
| Damaged clothing | 2 years, used | EUR 90 | EUR 35 current value | Photos, card record |
Ask for a line-by-line decision. If Qatar Airways offers a voucher or Avios, determine whether it is goodwill or proposed full settlement before accepting.
Examples
Paris-Doha cracked shell: report at arrival, obtain a repair estimate and send the written complaint within seven days.
Bag returned after three-day delay with broken wheel: preserve delivery timestamp and make both delayed-expense and damage requests under their respective periods.
Doha-Singapore damaged suitcase: European fixed-compensation direction is irrelevant; Montreal baggage rules can still govern the international carriage.
Two bags checked by one passenger: calculate proven combined loss under one passenger ceiling, not two automatic maximum awards.
FAQ
What is the Qatar Airways damaged-bag deadline?
For international checked baggage, send a written complaint within seven days after receiving the bag and report at the airport immediately when possible.
Does Qatar Airways have to buy me a new suitcase?
Not automatically. Repair feasibility, age, condition, depreciation and comparable replacement value all matter.
Is the limit 1,519 SDR for every suitcase?
No. It is generally a combined ceiling per passenger for baggage under the Convention.
What if a delayed bag arrives damaged?
Photograph it on delivery and make the damage complaint promptly while also preserving the separate 21-day delayed-baggage expense deadline.
Is baggage damage paid through EU261?
No. Montreal baggage liability is separate from EU261 or UK261 compensation for the flight disruption.
