Qatar Airways compensation claim deadline: which clock applies?
There is no single current worldwide deadline for every Qatar Airways claim. EU261 and UK261 court limitation depends on the national law of the competent forum. Montreal Convention court action is generally extinguished after two years. Checked-baggage damage should normally be notified in writing within seven days and baggage delay within twenty-one days. The future nine-month EU claim procedure is adopted but not yet current on 16 August 2026.

Check your case in the form
Enter your route, date and type of disruption. We will check whether your case qualifies for a claim under EU 261/2004 or UK261.
What happened to your flight?
Claim up to €600 for a delayed or cancelled flight.
Choose the situation that applies to your flight:
File with Qatar Airways promptly even where the court period is longer. Evidence deteriorates, booking access changes and a slow airline exchange may not pause limitation.
Deadline map
| Claim type | Time rule to investigate |
|---|---|
| EU261 delay, cancellation or denied boarding | National limitation law of competent court |
| UK261 claim | Applicable UK jurisdiction and limitation law |
| Montreal passenger-delay damage | Court action generally within two years |
| Damaged checked baggage | Written complaint generally within seven days of receipt |
| Delayed checked baggage | Written complaint generally within twenty-one days of delivery |
| Lost baggage | Report immediately; loss commonly treated after twenty-one days, court period still matters |
| Future amended EU claim form | Nine-month step only after new framework becomes effective |
These clocks can coexist after one journey. A damaged bag and a six-hour flight delay should not be placed on one undifferentiated deadline.
EU261 has national limitation, not one airline rule
Regulation 261/2004 does not create one uniform current court limitation period across Europe. The relevant national law depends on jurisdiction. A Qatar Airways departure from France, Germany, Spain or another country can therefore require different analysis.
Do not infer the deadline solely from passenger residence, ticket currency or place of online purchase. Departure, arrival, operating carrier, contract and chosen court can all matter. Court of Justice case law confirms that national limitation rules govern EU261 actions.
An airline form may remain technically open after the court claim is time-barred, or an internal response may quote a shorter policy that does not settle statutory limitation. Obtain local legal advice before relying on either.
UK261 needs its own forum analysis
For Qatar Airways departures from the UK, identify which UK jurisdiction and procedure would hear the claim. Limitation rules can differ across the United Kingdom and by cause of action. Do not copy an England-and-Wales figure into every Scottish or Northern Irish case without checking.
Starting a complaint with Qatar Airways or the CAA should not be assumed to suspend the court clock. Preserve the original travel date, disruption date, complaint submission and every response.
An inbound Qatar-operated Doha-London journey normally lacks UK261 fixed compensation, so a UK261 deadline may be irrelevant even if a contractual or Montreal deadline remains.
Montreal Convention: two years for court action
International passenger delay and baggage actions under the Montreal Convention are generally extinguished if proceedings are not brought within two years. The period is calculated under the Convention from arrival, scheduled arrival or the date carriage stopped, depending on the facts.
This is not a recommendation to wait. Qatar Airways needs time to investigate, and documents can disappear. File the airline claim immediately and diary the two-year endpoint separately.
The current passenger-delay liability limit is 6,303 SDR for proven damage. It is not an automatic award. The two-year rule applies to court action, while baggage also has much shorter written-notice requirements.
Baggage notices are urgent
Report delayed or damaged baggage at the arrival airport and obtain a file reference. Qatar Airways also provides an online mishandled-baggage route.
For visible or discovered damage, send a written complaint no later than seven days after receiving the bag. For baggage delay, send the written complaint within twenty-one days after delivery. A Property Irregularity Report is vital evidence, but do not assume it always replaces the later written monetary claim.
Keep bag tags, boarding passes, PIR, photographs, repair assessment and purchase receipts. The damaged-baggage guide gives a day-by-day checklist.
The adopted EU reform and nine months
The EU completed adoption of revised air passenger-rights rules in July 2026. The Council’s official notice says the updated framework enters into force twelve months and twenty days after publication in the Official Journal.
The new system includes a future nine-month period for passengers to submit a claim to the airline and a response timetable. On 16 August 2026, that procedure is not yet the generally applicable rule for current Qatar Airways claims.
It must also be distinguished from a court limitation period. An administrative filing step and the last date to sue are not the same concept. Content should be rechecked when the amended framework becomes effective.
Qatar Airways’ internal process does not replace law
Qatar Airways’ Help page provides Feedback & Concerns, refund/voucher and refund tracking. Submit through the matching channel and preserve the case reference. The absence of a prominently stated universal compensation deadline does not mean unlimited time.
Travel-agent bookings can slow ticket refunds because the issuer controls the document. Start both tracks early: ask the agent to process the fare remedy and send the fixed claim to the actual operating carrier.
If Qatar Airways asks for missing information, respond within the existing case. A new case does not restart legal limitation.
A practical deadline workflow
- Day 0-2: preserve ticket, boarding passes, messages, arrival time and receipts.
- At the airport: obtain denied-boarding confirmation or baggage PIR where relevant.
- Within seven days: send checked-baggage damage notice.
- Within twenty-one days of baggage delivery: send baggage-delay claim.
- As soon as facts are stable: submit EU261, UK261, refund or Montreal request.
- After an unresolved airline stage: escalate to the proper body without assuming time stopped.
- Well before court expiry: choose forum and commence proceedings if needed.
Use calendar dates, not “two years from my complaint”. The Convention calculation does not normally begin when Qatar Airways answers.
Evidence that protects timing
Save the form confirmation, sent email headers, case number, postal tracking and attachment list. Screenshots should show the URL and date where possible. Keep airline replies in original format.
For a group claim, identify each passenger and authority to act. A filing for one traveller may not automatically preserve another person’s claim. For minors, check who has legal capacity to file or litigate.
The Qatar Airways claim-form guide shows how to create a durable submission record.
Deadline examples
Rome departure delayed six hours: EU261 can apply, but the court deadline depends on the competent national forum. File now rather than adopting a period from another country.
Doha-London passenger incurs a non-refundable hotel loss: UK261 normally does not cover the Qatar-operated inbound journey. A Montreal delay action may have the two-year court period and needs proven loss.
Bag delivered damaged after Paris arrival: report at once and send the written damage claim within seven days, even while the flight compensation issue remains open.
FAQ
Is there one deadline for Qatar Airways EU261 claims?
No. Current court limitation is governed by the national law of the competent forum.
Does Qatar Airways have to receive a claim within nine months now?
Not yet. The nine-month procedure belongs to an adopted reform with delayed entry into force.
How long do I have for Montreal Convention court action?
Generally two years, calculated under the Convention from arrival, scheduled arrival or cessation of carriage.
Is a baggage PIR enough to meet the deadline?
Do not rely on it alone. Obtain the PIR and send the written damage or delay claim within the applicable seven- or twenty-one-day period.
Does complaining to a regulator stop the court clock?
Do not assume suspension. Check authoritative law for the chosen forum and track limitation independently.
