Oman Air flight compensation: EU261, UK261 and Oman passenger rights
Oman Air passengers may receive fixed compensation after a serious delay, cancellation or denied boarding, but the answer depends first on where the journey began. A qualifying Oman Air departure from the EU or EEA can be worth EUR 250, EUR 400 or EUR 600 under EU261. A journey beginning in the United Kingdom can qualify for GBP 220, GBP 350 or GBP 520 under UK261. Departures from Oman, and some Oman Air arrivals into Oman, are tested under Oman Passenger Rights Protection Regulation 757/2024, which uses different thresholds and OMR amounts.

Enter your route, date and type of disruption. We will check whether your case qualifies for a claim under EU 261/2004 or UK261.
What happened to your flight?
Claim up to €600 for a delayed or cancelled flight.
Choose the situation that applies to your flight:
Check the journey in the flight compensation calculator. Do not assume that every Oman Air flight to Europe is covered. Oman Air is an Omani carrier, so a separate Muscat-to-Europe flight normally falls outside EU261 and UK261. The outbound Europe-to-Muscat direction is much more likely to produce a fixed European claim.
The direction decides the first legal test
Use the first departure and final destination on the continuous booking, then identify the carrier that actually operated the affected flight.
| Journey pattern | Main starting point | Typical fixed-compensation test |
|---|---|---|
| Paris-CDG to Muscat on Oman Air | EU departure | EU261 |
| London-Heathrow to Muscat on Oman Air | UK departure | UK261 |
| Muscat to Bangkok on Oman Air | Oman departure | Oman Regulation 757/2024 |
| Bangkok to Muscat on Oman Air | Arrival in Oman on a national carrier | Departure-country rights first, then the Oman rule if not already assisted or compensated |
| Muscat to Paris on Oman Air | Non-EU carrier leaving a non-EU country | Usually not EU261; examine Oman law and the ticket |
For a single booking from Frankfurt through Muscat to an Asian destination, the protected EU departure can carry through to the final ticketed destination. A delay must therefore be measured where the passenger finally arrives, not merely at the connection in Muscat. Separate tickets are different: each contract usually needs its own scope analysis.
Read the dedicated EU departure guide or UK departure guide before choosing a currency and legal basis.
Compensation amounts are not interchangeable
| Applicable system | Distance or event bands | Maximum standard fixed amount |
|---|---|---|
| EU261 | Up to 1,500 km; qualifying intra-EU or 1,500-3,500 km; other journeys over 3,500 km | EUR 250 / EUR 400 / EUR 600 |
| UK261 | Short, medium and long distance bands | GBP 220 / GBP 350 / GBP 520 |
| Oman Regulation 757/2024 | International cancellation bands up to 1,500 km, 1,500-3,500 km and over 3,500 km | OMR 108 / OMR 173 / OMR 260 |
The Oman amounts apply to international cancellations notified within the protected period and, through the regulation's cross-reference, to delays exceeding six hours. A suitable alternative arriving within two hours can remove Oman fixed compensation. Rerouting that reaches the destination within the relevant three, four or five-hour window can reduce the amount by half.
Under EU261 and UK261, arrival delay of at least three hours is normally required for a delay claim. Long-distance compensation can also be reduced by 50% where rerouting keeps arrival within the statutory reduction window. Calculate each passenger separately; a family of four does not receive one shared payment.
What disruption can create a claim?
Long arrival delay
For Europe or UK coverage, compare scheduled arrival at the final destination with the time an aircraft door opened and passengers could leave. A late departure of four hours may produce no fixed payment if time is recovered and final arrival is under three hours. Under Oman Regulation 757/2024, the fixed-compensation route begins only when delay exceeds six hours, although care and proven Montreal Convention loss may arise earlier.
Cancellation
A cancellation can create three separate rights: reimbursement of unused travel, rerouting, and fixed compensation. Choosing rerouting does not automatically waive compensation. Notice timing, proposed replacement and extraordinary circumstances must still be tested. See the Oman Air cancellation guide.
Involuntary denied boarding
Passengers with confirmed reservations who presented themselves on time should not sign away their position without understanding a volunteer offer. EU, UK and Omani rules each address involuntary denied boarding, but the payment method and timing differ.
Downgrade and care costs
A cabin downgrade is calculated independently from arrival delay. Meals, hotel accommodation and transport are also separate from fixed compensation. Keep itemised receipts if Oman Air did not provide reasonable care directly.
When fixed compensation is not due
The route may be outside the territorial scope. A Muscat-origin Oman Air flight to Paris is not transformed into an EU261 journey simply because it lands in France. A Bangkok-origin itinerary to London on Oman Air similarly does not gain UK261 protection merely from its destination.
Compensation can also fail where the airline proves extraordinary circumstances or force majeure and an adequate causal connection. The legal tests are not identical. Routine aircraft defects are generally within an airline's activity under European and UK case law, while the annex to the Oman regulation expressly lists some unanticipated safety faults and hidden manufacturing defects. Never move a conclusion from one system into another without checking its wording.
No fixed amount is normally owed under EU261 when a cancellation was notified at least 14 days before departure. Shorter-notice exceptions depend on the replacement schedule. Oman law also uses a 14-day cancellation notice point for international journeys.
Evidence that makes the claim usable
Create one chronology and retain:
- the e-ticket, receipt and booking reference;
- every sector on the original itinerary;
- boarding passes showing the operated-by information;
- the first delay, cancellation or rebooking message;
- scheduled and actual arrival evidence at the last ticketed airport;
- the reason given by ground staff, email or application;
- rerouting offers and the replacement itinerary;
- receipts for meals, hotel, transport or replacement travel;
- authority to act for other adults where requested.
Screenshots should show a date, time and flight context. A bank entry proves expenditure but usually not what was purchased, so retain the merchant receipt too.
How to send the request
Oman Air provides a post-travel feedback form for service and passenger-rights complaints. Refunds for tickets bought directly can follow Oman Air's refund channel; tickets issued by an agent may require the issuer to process the fare reimbursement. Baggage has its own reporting path. Mixing a fixed compensation request, unused fare, luggage loss and every receipt under an unrelated form category can delay a decision.
State the passenger names, route, operating carrier, final arrival time or cancellation notice, governing rule, amount per passenger and attachments. If Oman Air refuses with only a broad phrase such as operational reasons, ask for the actual event, where it occurred, how it affected this flight and what reasonable measures were taken.
Oman Regulation 757/2024 says a carrier should decide a complaint within 15 working days, while the current Oman CAA FAQ describes a written airline response within 30 days. Preserve both the submission date and response. The inconsistency means passengers should not promise themselves that an appeal will be accepted on one exact calendar day.
FAQ
Can I claim EUR 600 for every delayed Oman Air flight?
No. EUR 600 requires EU261 coverage, the long-distance band, a qualifying disruption and no successful extraordinary-circumstances defence. Direction is the first filter.
Is Muscat to Europe covered by EU261?
Usually not when Oman Air operates a separate journey beginning in Muscat, because Oman Air is not an EU carrier. Check Oman rights instead.
Does compensation include the ticket refund?
No. Fixed compensation, reimbursement of unused fare, rerouting and care expenses are distinct remedies and may coexist when their separate conditions are met.
Are children entitled to the same fixed amount?
Children travelling on eligible tickets are generally assessed per passenger. A free infant without a reserved seat can require a closer ticket analysis.
What if a partner airline operated the flight?
EU261 and UK261 generally direct the claim to the operating carrier. Oman rules contain a different codeshare responsibility provision, so keep the original operated-by record.
