Oman Air departures from the UK: when UK261 applies
An Oman Air-operated journey beginning at a UK airport can qualify under UK261 for GBP 220, GBP 350 or GBP 520 after a serious disruption. The airline's Omani nationality does not exclude a Heathrow departure. The reverse Oman Air flight from Muscat to London normally falls outside UK261 because the service begins outside the UK and Oman Air is not a UK or EU carrier.

Use the flight compensation calculator with the complete booking. A through ticket from London-Heathrow via Muscat to India, Thailand or another final destination is assessed differently from two independently purchased reservations.
UK coverage by direction
| Journey | UK261 status |
|---|---|
| Heathrow to Muscat operated by Oman Air | Covered UK departure |
| Heathrow-Muscat-Asia under one booking | Potentially covered to final destination |
| Muscat to Heathrow operated by Oman Air | Normally outside UK261 |
| Foreign origin via Muscat to Heathrow | Normally outside UK261 for Oman Air operation |
| UK departure with a WY code but partner operation | Claim analysis follows the actual operator |
The destination does not create coverage for a non-UK carrier's inbound service. This asymmetry is crucial when a return booking suffers problems in both directions. The outward UK sector may support GBP compensation; the return may instead rely on departure-country law, Oman rules or the Montreal Convention.
Read the route-specific Heathrow-Muscat guide for practical timing examples.
Delay compensation
Fixed compensation normally requires arrival at the final destination at least three hours late. Use the time passengers were permitted to leave the aircraft rather than touchdown alone. For a directly connecting itinerary, measure the last ticketed airport.
The UK bands are:
- GBP 220 for journeys up to 1,500 km;
- GBP 350 for journeys between 1,500 and 3,500 km;
- GBP 520 for journeys over 3,500 km.
Heathrow-Muscat and most through journeys beyond Muscat sit in the long-distance category. Rerouting that limits long-distance arrival delay to no more than four hours can reduce GBP 520 to GBP 260.
Three hours establishes delay severity, but Oman Air can still rely on extraordinary circumstances if it proves the event and reasonable measures. Normal technical problems are generally not extraordinary. Serious external weather, air-traffic restrictions or security events may qualify.
Cancellation rights
After cancellation, the passenger chooses reimbursement or rerouting. Fixed compensation then depends on notice, replacement timing and cause. Notice at least 14 days before travel normally prevents GBP payment, while shorter notice uses specific alternative-flight windows.
Oman Air should not force a voucher where the passenger is entitled to money. If travel remains necessary, request rerouting rather than accepting a refund and buying an expensive replacement without first giving the airline a chance to perform its duty.
Cancellation care remains due during the wait. Meals, hotel accommodation and transfers are not part of the GBP 520 figure. Keep receipts where Oman Air provides no direct assistance.
The cancelled-flight page separates travel choices from fixed payment.
Missed connections from Heathrow
Suppose one Oman Air ticket runs Heathrow-Muscat-Kochi. The Heathrow flight leaves late, the passenger misses the connection and arrives in Kochi 11 hours after schedule. The final delay is measured in Kochi, not at Muscat. The complete booking and replacement itinerary are essential evidence.
A minimum connection time is not a passenger promise that the transfer will succeed regardless of the inbound delay. If Oman Air accepted the itinerary on one ticket and the traveller complied with boarding requirements, the carrier should reroute to the final destination.
Separate tickets create a different risk. Oman Air may owe compensation for a qualifying Heathrow-Muscat delay, but the lost onward ticket is not automatically part of UK261 rerouting. Travel insurance or a Montreal damages claim may need examination.
Operating carrier and codeshare
The flight number does not settle liability. UK261 generally places duties on the operating air carrier. A WY-marketed service could be operated by another airline; an Oman Air aircraft may carry a partner code. Keep the original ticket line stating “operated by”.
If Oman Air operated the disrupted UK departure, address the UK261 request to Oman Air. If British Airways, Qatar Airways or another partner actually performed it, the statutory claim normally follows that operator. The codeshare guide explains why marketing and operation must be separated.
What to send Oman Air
Create a short chronology with passenger names, booking reference, Heathrow departure, final destination, operating carrier, scheduled arrival, actual door-opening time and disruption reason. Attach the ticket, boarding passes, notifications, rerouting record and receipts.
Use Oman Air's post-travel feedback form for compensation and disruption expenses. Use its refund route for unused direct-ticket fare and baggage channels for luggage. State GBP per passenger and avoid a mixed EUR/OMR demand.
If the response only says “outside our control,” request the precise event, affected location, causal chain and attempted mitigation. For unresolved UK complaints, first complete the airline complaint process. Current CAA information should then be checked for the available alternative dispute resolution or Passenger Advice and Complaints Team route rather than relying on an old list.
Care, refund and compensation can coexist
A passenger rerouted after cancellation can still qualify for GBP compensation. Someone who continues after delay can claim fixed payment and reasonable care costs. A traveller who abandons after five hours may seek reimbursement. These remedies answer separate questions.
Do not deduct a hotel receipt from the statutory fixed amount. Do not describe ticket reimbursement as “compensation.” Label each sum and show its evidence.
Where arrival is close to three or four hours, request the aircraft door-opening record and compare it with independent airport movement data. A touchdown timestamp alone can conceal taxiing and stand delays. Convert every time to the same zone, retain the original schedule, and explain the calculation in minutes rather than rounding it to a convenient hour.
FAQ
Can Oman Air owe GBP 520 from Heathrow?
Yes. A qualifying journey over 3,500 km beginning in the UK can reach GBP 520 before any reduction.
Is Muscat to Heathrow covered by UK261?
Usually not when Oman Air operates it, because the journey starts outside the UK and the carrier is neither UK nor EU based.
Does a connection to India count?
It can count as the final destination when Heathrow-Muscat-India is one directly connecting booking.
Can a long replacement delay halve compensation?
Yes. Long-distance GBP 520 may be reduced to GBP 260 where rerouting arrives within the permitted four-hour window.
Where should an unresolved UK complaint go?
Complain to Oman Air first, then check current UK CAA guidance for the airline's applicable ADR or PACT route.
