Oman Air cancelled flight: refund, rerouting and compensation
After Oman Air cancels a flight, the passenger normally chooses between reimbursement and rerouting; fixed compensation is a separate question. A cancellation of an Oman Air departure from the EU can produce EUR 250-600 under EU261, while a UK departure can produce GBP 220-520 under UK261. Oman Regulation 757/2024 provides OMR 108, OMR 173 or OMR 260 for protected international cancellations notified less than 14 days before travel, subject to its alternative-flight and force-majeure provisions.

Enter your route, date and type of disruption. We will check whether your case qualifies for a claim under EU 261/2004 or UK261.

Choose the situation that applies to your flight:
The return direction matters. Oman Air is not an EU or UK carrier. A separate Muscat-Paris or Muscat-London cancellation therefore does not automatically qualify under EU261 or UK261. Check which passenger-rights system covers Oman Air before stating an amount.
Make the travel choice first
| Passenger's objective | Remedy to request | Practical consequence |
|---|---|---|
| End the disrupted trip | Refund of unused ticket and relevant ancillaries | Remaining travel is cancelled |
| Reach the destination soon | Rerouting at the earliest opportunity | Airline should propose workable transport |
| Travel later | Rerouting on a later suitable date, where the governing rule provides it | Subject to conditions and seat availability |
| Return after a broken connection | Reimbursement plus return to first departure point where applicable | Useful when the journey no longer serves its purpose |
Do not accept a refund automatically if you still need to travel and replacement fares are high. Conversely, do not accept an itinerary days later when the event has ended and reimbursement better serves the original purpose. Save every offer and the time it was made.
The refund, voucher and rerouting guide compares these options in detail.
EU261 cancellation test
An Oman Air-operated departure from Paris, Frankfurt, Munich, Milan or another EU/EEA airport falls within EU261 despite Oman Air being based outside the Union. Compensation is normally excluded if the passenger was informed at least 14 days before departure.
For notice between seven and fourteen days, the airline can avoid fixed compensation with rerouting that leaves no more than two hours early and reaches the final destination less than four hours late. For notice under seven days, the replacement must leave no more than one hour early and arrive less than two hours late. If those precise windows are not met, continue to the cause test.
Extraordinary circumstances can remove fixed compensation, but not the basic choice between reimbursement and rerouting or the duty of care. Oman Air must prove the event and reasonable measures. A vague reference to operational requirements does not identify a defence.
UK261 cancellation test
The UK regime protects Oman Air journeys departing London-Heathrow. The same broad structure applies: refund or rerouting, notice and replacement windows, fixed GBP bands, and an extraordinary-circumstances defence. Use pounds rather than copying a euro request into the UK complaint.
An Oman Air flight starting in Muscat and ending at Heathrow is generally outside UK261 because Oman Air is neither a UK nor an EU carrier. A qualifying partner may change the analysis if that partner actually operated the flight, so inspect the ticket's operated-by field.
See the dedicated Heathrow-Muscat rights guide for direction-specific examples.
Oman cancellation rules
Regulation 757/2024 applies to departures from Oman and to arrivals in Oman on a national carrier where the passenger has not already received compensation or assistance under the departure country's rules. International cancellation compensation uses these bands:
| Great-circle distance | Standard Omani amount |
|---|---|
| Up to 1,500 km | OMR 108 |
| More than 1,500 km and up to 3,500 km | OMR 173 |
| More than 3,500 km | OMR 260 |
No fixed cancellation compensation is due where notice came at least 14 days ahead. A proposed alternative arriving within two hours can also remove the amount. Where rerouting reaches the final destination within three, four or five hours depending on the distance band, compensation may be reduced by 50%.
The regulation requires refund of the unused sector and unused ancillary services when the passenger terminates the contract. Its payment provision allows the passenger to choose cash, bank transfer, bank draft or a voucher and sets a maximum of 14 business days after the carrier acknowledges entitlement. That clock is not the same as the time needed to establish a disputed claim.
Notice time is evidence, not memory
Retain the first email, text message or application notification. Screenshots should include the timestamp and booking context. If an agent contacted the lead passenger, preserve the agent's record as well. The airline may argue that notice was sent earlier than the passenger remembers.
Compare the original and replacement schedules at the final destination, not only the cancelled sector. For Paris-Muscat-Kochi under one booking, a replacement that reaches Muscat quickly but Kochi the next day is tested at Kochi for an EU261 connection claim.
If Oman Air says the flight operated under another number, obtain the actual movement history. A cancellation followed by rebooking onto a nearly identical service is still capable of being a cancellation; the commercial label is not decisive.
Can compensation coexist with a refund?
Yes. Reimbursement returns money paid for transport not provided. Fixed compensation addresses qualifying inconvenience. Care covers meals, accommodation and transport during the wait. Proven additional loss may fall under the Montreal Convention. Each remedy has its own conditions, and receiving one does not necessarily settle the others.
A voucher should be voluntary under the European and UK systems. Under the Oman payment article, the passenger also chooses among listed methods after entitlement is acknowledged. Read any waiver before accepting credit, especially if it claims to settle all past and future demands.
Claim checklist
Attach the original itinerary, ticket receipt, cancellation message, all replacement offers, final travel record and receipts. State where the continuous booking began, who operated the cancelled sector, when notice arrived and why the alternative failed any timing exception.
Request the chosen travel remedy separately from fixed compensation. If you bought a replacement only after Oman Air failed to offer workable rerouting, explain the attempts made, urgency, class of travel and why the price was reasonable. The replacement-flight cost guide covers that evidence.
Submit the disruption complaint through Oman Air's feedback form. For direct-ticket refunds, follow its refund path; an issuing travel agent may need to process fare money. Preserve the case number and response.
FAQ
Must I choose a voucher after Oman Air cancels?
No. Do not treat credit as compulsory. Ask for the cash or bank remedy available under the governing system unless a voucher genuinely works for you.
Can I take rerouting and still claim compensation?
Yes. Rerouting and fixed compensation are separate, although replacement timing can remove or reduce the fixed amount.
Does fourteen days always end the case?
It normally removes fixed cancellation compensation, but refund, rerouting and care rights can remain. Verify when effective notice was actually sent.
What if Oman Air blames force majeure?
Request the exact event, causal link and mitigation. A proven defence may remove fixed payment but normally does not erase refund or rerouting duties.
Who handles a ticket bought from an agent?
The issuing agent may process the fare refund, while the operating carrier remains central to statutory disruption compensation. Keep both case records.
