Lufthansa refund, voucher or rerouting: three different choices
Short answer: after Lufthansa cancels a flight, the passenger chooses a cash reimbursement, rerouting at the earliest opportunity or travel on a later convenient date, subject to seats. A voucher is voluntary and should be accepted only after checking its value, expiry, transferability and effect on the booking. Current EU261 requires reimbursement within seven days.

Choose the situation that applies to your flight:
These options are alternatives for the same cancelled transport. Choose according to whether the journey still has a purpose before clicking a refund button or accepting credit.
Compare the options
| Choice | Best suited to | Main consequence |
|---|---|---|
| cash reimbursement | passenger no longer wants the journey | Lufthansa's duty to carry onward normally ends |
| earliest rerouting | destination still matters now | carrier must seek a reasonable prompt route |
| later-date rerouting | passenger wants the trip at another time | seats must be available and care does not run indefinitely |
| voluntary voucher | passenger values flexible future credit | terms replace immediate cash use of the refunded amount |
| self-booked replacement | Lufthansa fails to reroute properly | reasonableness and prior request must be proved |
Fixed compensation is assessed separately. A refund does not automatically settle EUR 250–600 or GBP 220–520 which may be due for the disruption.
Cash reimbursement
Article 8 covers the ticket cost for the part not travelled. It can also cover a part already flown when the journey no longer serves the passenger's original travel plan, together with a return flight to the first point of departure at the earliest opportunity where relevant.
Example: Manchester–Frankfurt–Tokyo is one booking. The Frankfurt connection is cancelled after the passenger reaches Germany, and the business meeting can no longer be attended. Reimbursement may include the journey which became useless and a return to Manchester, not merely the unflown sector.
Current EU law states reimbursement within seven days by cash, electronic bank transfer, bank order or cheque. Travel vouchers or other services require the passenger's signed agreement. The EU reform adopted in July 2026 is not yet applicable on 10 August 2026; future deadlines must not be substituted for the current rule.
Lufthansa's online refund tool can be convenient, but preserve the cancellation notice and fare breakdown before submitting. Refund calculations for partly used tickets, ancillaries and upgrades require enough detail to verify the result.
Earliest rerouting
Choose this when reaching the destination remains the priority. Lufthansa should compare reasonable options rather than waiting for its own next service by default. Another Lufthansa Group airline, a partner, a different connection airport or rail may be appropriate.
The rerouting should use comparable transport conditions. That does not promise the same seat number, aircraft or every onboard feature. A cabin downgrade has its own percentage-reimbursement rule, while an upgrade without extra charge does not create a surcharge.
If Lufthansa's proposal arrives materially later than available alternatives, ask it to book the earlier route and preserve availability. The replacement transport guide explains when independent purchase may be recoverable.
Care continues while the passenger reasonably waits for earliest rerouting. Meals, accommodation and hotel transfers are not replaced by the ticketing choice.
Travel on a later date
Article 8 also allows rerouting at a later date convenient to the passenger, subject to seat availability. This preserves transport without forcing immediate travel during disruption.
The option does not create unrestricted access to any future flight or fare. Agree the date and cabin with Lufthansa and obtain a reissued ticket. Once a passenger deliberately postpones beyond the earliest opportunity, Lufthansa normally does not owe meals and hotels for the voluntary interval.
Seasonal routes and partner inventory can limit availability. Ask for written confirmation before making non-refundable hotel or event arrangements around the new date.
Voucher: consent and terms
A voucher can be attractive if Lufthansa adds value and the passenger expects to fly again. It is not equivalent to cash. Review:
- expiry and booking deadline;
- whether travel must finish before expiry;
- passenger-name or transfer restrictions;
- eligible airlines, routes and currencies;
- treatment of any unused balance;
- whether acceptance purports to settle other claims.
Consent should be informed and voluntary. A preselected credit option, unclear interface or statement that only a voucher is available should be challenged with a request for monetary reimbursement.
Do not assume a voucher waives fixed compensation, but read settlement language carefully. Save the terms displayed at acceptance.
Cancellation versus five-hour delay
Cancellation gives the Article 8 choice immediately. A passenger facing a departure delay of at least five hours can also choose reimbursement when continuing no longer makes sense, with a return flight where the journey has become useless.
Leaving after a three-hour delay does not automatically create a refund right. Ask Lufthansa to confirm the available option before abandoning the airport. The five-hour Lufthansa guide covers the threshold and return journey.
For an arrival delay after travel is completed, ticket reimbursement is normally not the remedy; fixed compensation and expenses are assessed instead.
OTA and travel-agent bookings
An intermediary may be the merchant of record or hold the payment channel, but Lufthansa remains responsible for regulatory transport choices when it operates the cancelled flight. Determine who actually received the fare before deciding where money should flow.
Do not submit simultaneous refund requests that could produce conflicting cancellations. Obtain the e-ticket number, fare breakdown and written status from both parties. Agency service fees may be governed by the agency contract rather than Article 8.
The Lufthansa OTA guide separates operating-carrier, ticketing and package responsibilities.
US and Canadian journeys
US Department of Transportation rules require automatic refunds for cancelled or significantly changed flights to, from or within the United States when the passenger does not accept alternatives. Credit-card refunds are due within seven business days and other payment methods within 20 calendar days under the US rule.
Canadian APPR has its own refund and rebooking structure. A transatlantic itinerary can engage more than one framework, but the passenger cannot recover the same ticket price twice. State what has already been paid when relying on another regime.
Claim and audit the payment
Submit the booking code, e-ticket numbers, affected sectors, selected option and preferred payment details through the appropriate Lufthansa channel. Keep confirmation of the election and case number.
When payment arrives, compare it with base fare, carrier surcharge, taxes, ancillaries and flown sectors. Ask for a calculation if the amount is unclear. A partial reimbursement does not necessarily resolve a separate fixed-compensation or care claim.
FAQ
Can Lufthansa force me to accept a voucher?
No. Regulatory reimbursement is monetary unless the passenger freely agrees to a voucher or another service.
How quickly must Lufthansa make an EU261 refund?
The current regulation states seven days; the adopted 2026 reform is not yet applicable on the status date of this guide.
Can I take a refund and still demand rerouting?
Normally no, because they are alternative Article 8 choices for the same transport.
Does choosing rerouting remove fixed compensation?
No. Rerouting and fixed compensation have separate tests, although timely replacement arrival can reduce the amount in defined cases.
Is a US refund deadline the same as EU261?
No. US rules distinguish seven business days for credit cards and 20 calendar days for other payment methods.
