Lufthansa delay over five hours: refund, return flight or travel
Short answer: when a covered Lufthansa departure is delayed by at least five hours, the passenger may abandon the journey and request reimbursement of the unused ticket. If travel already completed has lost its purpose, the used portion and a return flight to the first point of departure can also matter. Continuing the journey preserves possible arrival-delay compensation and care, but normally means the same transport is not refunded.

What happened to your flight?
Claim up to €600 for a delayed or cancelled flight.
Choose the situation that applies to your flight:
This is a choice at departure, not a promise that every passenger waiting five hours receives both a full ticket refund and transport to the destination. Decide only after checking the replacement plan and the purpose of the whole booking.
The five-hour rule and the three-hour rule differ
| Rule | Clock used | Main remedy |
|---|---|---|
| Three-hour delay | arrival at final destination | fixed compensation if other tests pass |
| Five-hour delay | expected or actual departure waiting | option to abandon for reimbursement |
| Care threshold | departure waiting, starting at 2/3/4 hours | meals, communications, hotel if needed |
A passenger can wait five hours, take the flight and arrive 4 hours 20 minutes late. They may have a fixed compensation claim but cannot usually demand a refund for transport they used. Another passenger may abandon at five hours and receive reimbursement without any final arrival; that passenger's fixed delay claim needs careful legal assessment because the journey was not completed.
For the arrival route, see Lufthansa delayed-flight compensation.
What reimbursement can include
Article 8 refers to the cost of the ticket for the part or parts of the journey not made. It can also reach travel already made if the delay has made the original journey pointless, together with a return flight to the first departure point at the earliest opportunity.
Consider three situations:
Outbound trip not started
Lufthansa delays London to Frankfurt by more than five hours. The passenger is travelling for a meeting that will end before any feasible arrival. They reject travel. The unused itinerary should be reimbursed. UK261 governs the UK departure.
Connection after useful travel
A passenger travels New York to Frankfurt and then faces a six-hour delay to Prague. The trip still has value and they continue. The right to meals applies, and final arrival may support EU261 compensation because Lufthansa is an EU carrier. A refund of the used New York sector is not the logical remedy.
Journey has lost its purpose
A passenger flies Dublin to Frankfurt for a same-day event and the onward service is delayed beyond the event. If the completed Dublin sector no longer serves the travel plan, reimbursement of relevant parts and return to Dublin may be requested. Explain the purpose with booking records, event timing or onward arrangements.
How to exercise the choice
Tell Lufthansa clearly that you are abandoning the journey under the applicable five-hour delay rule and requesting reimbursement. Do not simply leave the airport and later describe yourself as a no-show. Use the service desk, digital support or a written channel and preserve the timestamp.
Before confirming a refund in "My bookings," screenshot the itinerary and delay. Read whether the action cancels all remaining sectors, including the return. If only one passenger in a multi-person booking is stopping, ask Lufthansa to split the reservation first; online cancellation may affect everyone.
Request:
- refund to the original payment method;
- identification of every coupon being cancelled;
- return to the first departure point where the trip lost its purpose;
- written confirmation that no remaining sector was cancelled unintentionally;
- payment record and calculation for a partially used ticket.
Lufthansa's public refund information distinguishes complete and pro-rata refunds. An agent-booked ticket may involve the merchant for payment processing, but the passenger-rights choice still arises from the operating disruption.
If you continue travelling
Continuing may be commercially sensible where the destination still matters. Keep the original and revised schedules, then calculate arrival at the final destination. If arrival is at least three hours late and the cause is not a proven extraordinary event, fixed compensation may be due.
Do not sign a voucher acceptance that describes the payment as full settlement unless that is intended. A meal voucher is care, not settlement. A travel credit offered instead of cash refund is voluntary. The Lufthansa refund and voucher guide explains those documents.
Care does not stop at five hours
While a passenger waits to continue at the earliest opportunity, Lufthansa remains responsible for reasonable refreshments and communications. An overnight wait requires accommodation and transport. These duties survive extraordinary circumstances.
If the passenger elects reimbursement and ends the contract, future care generally ends when a reasonable departure from the airport is possible. Expenses incurred before the election remain separately assessable. Keep receipts and note when the choice was communicated.
UK, EU, US and Canadian overlaps
For an EU departure, current Article 8 speaks of reimbursement within seven days. UK261 retains comparable refund rights for a qualifying UK departure. A Lufthansa-operated inbound flight to the EU can also be covered because Lufthansa is an EU carrier.
For an itinerary to or from the United States, US DOT rules can require an automatic refund following cancellation or significant change when the passenger rejects alternative travel. DOT uses its own definitions and payment timing. Canadian APPR has another set of rules for Canada journeys. Do not replace the five-hour European test with the six-hour US international significant-change definition; they answer different legal questions.
The USA and Canada Lufthansa guide keeps these remedies in separate columns.
Evidence and wording
A useful reimbursement request states:
- original scheduled departure and current expected departure;
- the moment the five-hour threshold was reached;
- the explicit decision not to travel;
- the unused sectors and amount paid;
- why any completed travel no longer served its purpose;
- the requested return flight, if needed;
- bank or original payment details.
Attach the e-ticket receipt, fare breakdown, disruption notice, screenshots and the written abandonment message. If Lufthansa refunds only taxes, ask for the fare-coupon calculation and explain that this is an involuntary disruption request, not voluntary cancellation under fare conditions.
FAQ
Can I leave after five hours and demand a Lufthansa refund?
Yes, for a covered qualifying delay, but notify Lufthansa that you are abandoning travel and preserve proof. Do not rely on an unexplained no-show.
Can I receive a refund and still take the delayed flight?
Normally not for the same transport. Refund ends that part of the journey, while continuing uses the service. Fixed compensation is a separate question.
Does five hours guarantee EUR 600?
No. Fixed compensation depends on final arrival, distance, coverage and cause. Five hours mainly creates the option to abandon for reimbursement.
What happens to my return flight?
It may be cancelled when the outbound booking is refunded. Ask Lufthansa to confirm every affected coupon and split passengers or sectors where necessary.
Is a voucher the same as reimbursement?
No. Cash reimbursement is the statutory default route; travel credit requires informed agreement and has its own conditions.
