Lufthansa Asia journeys through Frankfurt or Munich: EUR 600 claims

Short answer: a Lufthansa-operated journey between Asia and the EU can be covered by EU261 in either direction because Lufthansa is a Community carrier. Routes to Japan, India, Singapore and other Asian destinations generally exceed 3,500 km, so an eligible disruption commonly starts in the EUR 600 band. One booking is measured to the final destination, not merely Frankfurt or Munich.

Codeshares and separate tickets change that result. Confirm who operated the disrupted flight and whether the onward connection was protected.

The marketing code and Miles & More credit do not make a partner a Community carrier. Keep the e-ticket and boarding pass line stating "operated by."

One ticket through Germany

Example: Tokyo to Frankfurt to Barcelona is one Lufthansa booking. The inbound service arrives late, Barcelona is missed and the passenger reaches Spain 12 hours late. The final destination is Barcelona. Lufthansa's EU status supports inbound coverage, and the end-to-end journey exceeds 3,500 km.

Example: Delhi to Munich to London is sold on one booking and operated by Lufthansa. UK arrival introduces possible UK261 overlap while EU261 may arise through Lufthansa operation and the EU connection. Only one fixed payment is available; select the coherent regime and disclose any prior benefit.

Example: Singapore to Munich and Munich to Warsaw are separate tickets. The first contract ends at Munich. A 90-minute delay does not automatically become the next day's Warsaw arrival. Insurance may cover the self-transfer loss.

The Lufthansa connection article sets the evidence test.

EUR 600 and the four-hour boundary

Asia routes generally exceed 3,500 km and end outside the EU when departing Europe. Under EU261:

  • final arrival under three hours: no fixed delay payment;
  • arrival three to under four hours late: EUR 300 may apply;
  • arrival four hours or more late: EUR 600 starting amount;
  • qualifying cancellation or denied boarding: EUR 600, subject to rerouting reduction.

Door opening, not touchdown, decides arrival. A Tokyo flight landing 3 hours 53 minutes late may cross four hours before passengers can leave, changing the amount from EUR 300 to EUR 600.

For a family of four, EUR 600 each produces EUR 2,400. Cabin and fare do not change the fixed sum. A qualifying Miles & More award passenger is included.

Missed connections at Frankfurt or Munich

Connection evidence should include arrival position, bus transfer, passport and security controls, onward gate and closure time. Frankfurt boards publish walking-time information. Munich Terminal 2 and its satellite use an underground train, while partner combinations can require a terminal transfer.

If Lufthansa sold the itinerary as one booking, it should address final arrival rather than blaming a connection length it accepted. Passenger-caused delay, missing documents or a voluntary stop remain relevant.

Automatic rebooking should be checked against the earliest reasonable arrival. Asia services may not operate at a time that makes same-day replacement possible, but another route through a different European gateway or partner can be relevant. Ask before buying independently and preserve availability screenshots.

Technical, weather and airspace causes

Long-haul aircraft defects attract broad labels. Ordinary component failure or wear is generally inherent in airline activity. A hidden manufacturing defect announced by the manufacturer can be different, but Lufthansa should identify it.

Weather at origin, destination or along the route may be extraordinary. Airspace closures and ATC restrictions can also qualify. Lufthansa still must show causation and reasonable measures, including whether a different route or timely rerouting was reasonably available.

A prior event affecting the incoming aircraft is not self-proving. Ask for the rotation and timeline. A disruption can begin extraordinarily and later be prolonged by airline-controlled recovery.

Care on an Asia journey

Meals, communications, hotel and airport transport remain due during covered waiting, even where the fixed EUR 600 defence succeeds. This matters when the next intercontinental departure is the following day.

Keep itemised receipts and choose reasonable services. If stranded outside Europe on a Lufthansa-operated inbound flight, EU261 care can still apply because Lufthansa is an EU carrier. Local consumer law may add protection, but avoid duplicate expense recovery.

Baggage delay is a separate Montreal claim. If the passenger arrives but the bag does not, report a PIR immediately and keep necessity receipts.

Award tickets and upgrades

Article 3(3) includes tickets issued through a frequent-flyer programme. A Lufthansa Miles & More award to Asia can therefore receive fixed compensation on the same terms as a cash fare.

If an upgrade is lost during rerouting, distinguish cabin downgrade from non-delivery of a separately purchased service. Article 10 reimbursement uses the affected flight price and can be difficult for mileage upgrades; request Lufthansa's valuation and preserve the upgrade confirmation. Claim file for Asia travel

Attach the full itinerary and show that all sectors share a booking. Identify every operating carrier. State final scheduled and actual arrival, door-opening evidence, distance and amount per passenger. List care and baggage costs separately.

Do not hard-code a flight number or frequency in the claim template. Schedules change. The passenger's ticket and live disruption record are authoritative.

FAQ

Is Tokyo to Frankfurt covered when Lufthansa operates it?

Yes. Lufthansa is a Community carrier arriving in the EU, so EU261 can apply.

Does an ANA-operated LH codeshare have the same inbound coverage?

Not automatically. ANA is the operating carrier and is not EU-licensed, so the inbound EU261 limb differs.

Is every Asia delay worth EUR 600?

No. Coverage, at least three hours, cause and any under-four-hour reduction must be tested.

Does Frankfurt or the Asian city set the distance?

On one booking, use the final ticketed destination affected by disruption, not the connection airport.

Are award tickets eligible?

Yes. Public frequent-flyer programme tickets are included under Article 3(3).
